Feeding the thousands, from Celtic to Southampton

507

News that Southampton FC have nominated Mary’s Meals as their official international charity partner is a genuine great football story, and a significant landmark for the Scottish-based charity which now feeds over a millions children per day.

Mary’s Meals were in touch on Friday with news and photographs from the fourth school kitchen paid for by Celtic Quick News readers, in Chibwata, Malawi. Since the kitchen was built, school enrolment has increased by 34% to 1226 pupils. Each day over 4,000 pupils are fed in school kitchens built by CQN readers.

The school role has increased because of the availability of a daily meal, but as well as being better fed and healthier, hundreds of pupils are now getting an education who previously missed out.  Benefits are not limited to food today, there are lifetime benefits of getting a primary education, which will help the pupils and the nation as a whole for decades.

Those of you who have put the occasional £1 into Appeal alongside the Magners’ competitions we run, or who have put significantly more than this on occasion, should be enormously proud of what you’ve achieved.  It is a stunning testament to the Celtic support.  Thanks for all your help.

Celtic have done enormous work with Mary’s Meals in the past through the Foundation but let’s hope this break into English football opens up many more opportunities for the charity.

  1. I was at Hampden in 88. I was there when Martins bhoys won 6-2. The St Patricks day massacre in 92, Portugal in 03 as we marched into a european final.

  2. Morning,all.

By ‘eck,HERBO,you’ve been busy. It used to take a team of us on a moonhowling shift to have everyone else spluttering into their cornflakes!

    Proud of you,bud-but ca’ canny,please.

Firstly,an apology for a post I made here towards the end of last month. A betrayal of confidence, and more, and I’m not proud of it. But it’s done,I’ll deal with that.

More importantly,I see suggestions are finally being made about getting the blog back to how it was for, say, the first ten years of its existence.

Not before time-in fact,I’ve been discussing that very thing with a few people over the last few days. A lot of us have formed very real friendships through this site,we’ve had many a good time together.

We’ve raised a bliddy fortune for various great causes, and will continue to do so.

In that time, aye, there’s been a few heated discussions, but the level of civility tended to be as high as the level of debate. I think we all know that is not generally the case now. And I’ve been as guilty as anyone when it comes to that…

So,I’m cutting short my planned absence from the site in order to make an impassioned attempt to lure back the lurkers and the disillusioned, the lads and lasses who made this THE go-to site for all things Celtic-and a lot more besides.

I’ll be e-mailing a few of them too,so be warned!

It’s coming up to Christmas, many of us will have a bit more time on our hands than usual, and will hopefully be of good cheer. So,please, get back on here folks.

It was a great site not so long ago,and it should be a great site still. But it is only as good as the people who post on it.

  6. Good morning bhoys and ghirls – good to see a few auld tins around..

Last night I lit a very blue touch paper called RH Davidson but had to retire due to being knackered – wherever he is now its not the same place as Jinky!

He caused me to use a sweary in front of my uncle – never done that in my life prior to that but it was justified – the B had just sent Jimmy off for ‘retaliation’ – Aberdeen game I think.

What were they getting away with before wall to wall TV and the coming of the Bampots?

  7. Reading about the new League Cup set up for next season. A positive is at least they’re trying something different. However, we have a problem with our co-efficient because every season every Scottish team is knocked out of Europe by the end of July/early August, the exception being Celtic who struggle to qualify to the group stages. How does this new venture into ‘summer’ football assist our teams in Europe if they don’t enter the League Cup competition until September?

    Doc,

got to agree, many happy returns to CRC, this [place has went downhill since he stopped the Friday night quiz, even if I didnt participate.

  10. Ah the Friday night quiz, CQN at its best. My weekly fight with a fading memory and a bottle of red.

  11. Good morning from a slightly less miserable than it was yesterday Finneston

Nope – doesn’t sound the same – get back here Bobo

  12. League Cup revamp is at least an attempt to reinvigorate the competition. Might not be perfect but at least it is an attempt.

So any other ideas get them on here about how we improve our lot.

My thoughts – the match experience must be improved. Surely we can learn from Germany here? Halve ticket prices and make up the shortfall through fans spending their money on other merchandise.

A winter break is a no brainer for me.

Scrap the League Cup and start league matches at the beginning of July.

The playoffs have been a success – could they be further enhanced?

Ditching corruption is no a priority for you then, oh look there’s a squirrel eh

looks to me like there’s plenty that just want to move on, nothing to see here timmy, lets all talk about the new squirrel, ffs.

Would prefer to see a summer season (March to November) but beginning the league at he beginning of July and having a break in January would be a decent alternative.

  18. League Cup revamp?

    Regionalized,?

Gerrymandering more likely,so they can get their fixture back on,such a wheeze! no need for diedco to be in the big League just as long as there is a diedco, sorted.
