Football the morning after the night before

844

We should commission a study into what happens to football teams immediately after a big game when they need to play a less illustrious opponent.  This week Kilmarnock got a better result against Celtic than Barcelona, and unlike the Catalans, Kilmarnock were away from home.

Cast your memory back five years for a better example.  Celtic beat Champions League holders, Milan, remarkably the only time the club have recorded a win against reigning champions, and met Gretna the following weekend, at Fir Park, Motherwell.  Gretna were promoted that summer but had cutbacks forced on them, as the financial gamble to promote them to the top flight.  Still, a James Grady free kick caught Artur Boruc on his heels.  It took goals from Chris Killen (remember him?) and Scott McDonald in the final three minutes to save face for Celtic.  Gretna failed towards the end of that season and were subsequently liquidated.

Celtic got the better of both Spartak Moscow and Benfica that season.

Yeah but it’s not a matter of them choosing not to turn up for the bread and butter games.

They seem to be incapable of doing so.

It’s not that they’re lazy or complacent or whatever. It’s more complex than that.

  2. Don’t think its a case of “can’t be bothered”, I play a lot of Golf and if you are any bit mentally tired your game goes to pieces, I reckon its much the same in every sport. Its a great problem to have and I hope we have it well into the New Year.

Re the Savile shirt, the date of that TOTP IIRC was Nov 26th.

Celtic had played Rangers on 24th, though that may be just coincidence.

I was wondering if maybe that episode was shot in Glasgow, but I can’t find any details, oh well a mystery.

  6. TerryONeill Neil ah love yae on

For me Neil Lennon picked the wrong team.

Last week Tony Watt played well enough to merit his place against

    He should have partnered Miku.

Commons should have started on the bench.

Miku plays the lone striker role sometimes for Venezuala but thats in a counter attacking team not one who have to play against packed defences most weeks.

There is something about Commons ah dont like,he has great ability but looks at times as if he chucks it too easily if hes not in the mood he is anoymous.

The other big factor that i dont like about this team is the inability to play at tempo from the get go.

Too many players who lack drive who will sideways pass not take responsibility a form of cowardice.

Commons and Ledley are too anonymous too many times for ma liking.

There was an immediate increase in tempo when we went 1-0 down.

Slow tempo safe passes means the finger cant be pointed at you.

Fast tempo trying to take a man on trying to thread a pass means the finger can be pointed at you if it goes wrong.

We need players who can handle the criticism that goes wae playing at Celtic park some players only do enough tae get by Ledley Commons Matthews are all guilty of hiding at Celtic park.

I don’t agree, it’s down to professionalism 100%, we have too many inconsistent armatures, tell me, does their money change from week to week, their attitude does.

It wasn’t shot in Scotland. The audience members were from the London area.

BTW a couple of weeks ago people ON HERE were expressing incredulity that rumours about Saville had been rife for decades.

Well here’s someone who’d heard the rumours in 1988.

2nd half of the Merseyside Derby just started. Hope Everton do it and I don’t mind who scores ;-)

  14. How, after AT’s national report on the hun scum, is it right that Sky and its craven commentators are giving any credence whatsoever to a gang of misfits whose sole raison d’être is to denigrate anyone not of their vinegar faced beliefs, and who think cold hard violence will keep them intact for generations to come?

They are finished. We’re just waiting for the trapdoor to open beneath them. Flushed away.

I’m still of the opinion the whole timing of the publishing is to give the Yorkshire police a wee rest, they’ve been punished enough don’t you know, meanwhile in Yorkshire police and social workers who referred to child sex slaves as prostitutes are still in place and being paid from the public purse.

  16. ernie lynch,

    Yes I saw those two.

As is often the case with complex legal issues the answer is either Maybe or It Depends. Where Salmond always falls down is in his baseless assertions that he is right just because he is.

Yes, I’ve watched the Sadowitz ones before.

On another forum, a few years back, he was being lauded for his great charity work, I asked if they knew about his denial about ever having been to Jersey, never mind Haut de la Guerenne, then his picture appearing in the papers there.

Strange why his denial didn’t prompt a serious enquiry then.

  19. I joyfully remember a fitness game getting organised for Alfie Conn against my hometown’s Accies – stadium was mobbed – game was abandoned due to an apocalyptic downpour.

Remember my Dad careering in with the info and dinner was abandoned, much like the game later.

This memory sums up how I feel about Celtic – I only ever had one team, there was never any big team, wee team confusion.

Down here this week, I am in Kent, there were two or three photos of Savile in a TOTP programme.

He is wearing that shirt, and the story was that during that episode he put his hands up one of the young girls standing beside him, skirt. You can see her shock etc, She complained. To the floor staff, was told to go away and don’t be stupid.

    Shocking.
