Football’s hard, Armstrong, McNeill v Greig

661

Last week I suggested we were better with yesterday’s game over and done with, but I have to admit to thoroughly enjoying the occasion.  It may not have been the derby of Old, but it had traces of familiarity from my youth, when managers Billy McNeill and John Greig faced each other.

I watched the game back on television last night.  What an absolute pair of trumpets Warburton and Weir are!  Weir was sent to the stand for demanding Mikael Lustig receive a second yellow card, despite not receiving his first.  Warburton then explained this to the media, indignant that Lustig wasn’t dismissed for two yellows, still totally oblivious to the fact he hadn’t been booked.

Football’s hard.  Referees make mistakes.  But keeping track of who has been booked is remarkably simple.  It was Nir Bitton, not Mikael, who was booked early in the game.  Nir and Mikael have a similar, slight, build, but there’s 7cm between them, with different skin and hair pantones.

What does this tell us?  That the Newco management didn’t know their opponents well enough to tell them apart, never mind how they would play.  Remarkable, considering how often we’ve been on television this season.

Two weeks ago a Dundee United fan asked me what we’d done to Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven.  Armstrong, he explained, was never going to make it as a wide player, he was effective for United through the middle.

I think we suffered for the loss of Tom Rogic, as Stuart edged himself into the occasion, but it may be Ronny Deila deployed him incorrectly.

Moments to cherish from the game: Moussa Dembele’s first touch to control Lustig’s cross at the fourth, and his reverse pass for Scott Sinclair at the third.  You’ve not seen control and awareness like that from a Celtic striker in over a decade.

We’ll touch on the longer-term issues of yesterday at a later date, after we’ve got Barcelona out of our system.

The one thing we all wanted from yesterday was to come through the game without further injuries.  Both Scott Brown and Tom Rogic, two of our central midfield three, retired early.  I’m not going to tell you we’ll take anything from Barcelona on Tuesday, but having Brown, Rogic and Bitton in the team will allow us to at least face the game in decent condition.

  1. Can this weekend get any better MrsGFTB through in LMS am oot as I took Chelsea, CRC/Jobo will email when I buy back in !

Moral of the story stick with Celtic my original choice but didn’t want to jinx them

Proudbhoy not sticking my head in the clouds but don’t give these clowns any more airtime…. Totally agree with you

  2. Aye, any excuse to have a kick at us, re running the game BB pelted out in first 90 seconds and you want to talk about blow up dolls. ;)

  3. I personally think the blow up dolls which were hung from the top tier are, in the very least, in extremely poor taste.

I would, however, prefer to hear the reason for the ‘display’ from those responsible before going over the top with any criticism.

I liked Brendan’s post match comments on Armstrong’s role yesterday. It looks like he’ll be played centrally which most of us recognised was his best position.

I don’t think any of us could have been more impressed with the manner in which he’s conducted himself with the MSM. This guy absolutely exudes honesty, decency and integrity. Marry this with a steely determination and you have an incredibly formidable man.

    From the Scotsman.

‘Police Scotland said they were aware of the damage but that Celtic FC were dealing with the situation as an internal matter.’

    ________

I read that but surely i should be a criminal matter – especially considering there is evidence on Social Media that it was premeditated?.

I also take it from that statement there will be no condemnation of the dregs guilty of the damage – I guess they feel too much of an affinity towards them for that.

I have to say, leaving partisan ship aside, he has captured some very iconic pictures of celtic players, and our fans banners over the years.

A word on Warburton – he has peaked – he peaked at Hampden against us never will he reach that level again

He only peaked because we troughed.

  8. Re: The blow up dolls

Before this issue gets too big for us, a wee bit of calrity is required.

The fact that they are blow up dolls is not the issue. It might be a bit juvenile but that is not the offensive part.

It is not because they are mocking Rangers’ death- that is a fine pastime and we have displayed coffins and wreaths before.

It has nothing to do with the sad death of Kris Boyd’s brother- that is people crossing the road to take offence.

What it might be, and I’m guessing here, as I had nothing to do with it, is

    a) Mocking Ranger’s committing financial suicide

or b) Mocking the Rangers song “Build my Gallows High”

Both of these are legitimate targets for mocking but the method used, when it is graphic, needs some consideration. Draping a Rangers scarf around an effigy that you hang from our rafters is open to a whole host of misinterpretation, regardless of what your intention was.

It is a striking graphic representation of death by suicide and, ignoring those who desire to have it misinterpreted, I can well understand how many would see it as nothing more than a representation of a hanged Rangers fan or entity.

I tend to think that the Celtic fans who dreamed this up are guilty of a lack of imagination and empathy. Any family who have lost a loved one to suicide would have taken the wrong message from this image and that is where those who did it, got it wrong.

In this instance, as with the vandalism of toilets by Celtic fans at Ibrox, I have no hesitation in condemning the action.

I would like to keep the condemnation in perspective though.

Surprised by the normally objective and astute Michael Stewart’s comments on Sportscene. He reckons Sevco will be fighting Aberdeen and Hearts for second.

Based on what you have seen so far Michael?

  11. The blow up dolls being hung with the Sevconians scarves is just unacceptable. Don’t care what stupid joke lay behind it. It’s a level I expect from Huns and Orangemen with their effigies on their bonfires. If these were hung at the other end with Celtic scarves we wouldn’t care much for whatever excuse lay behind it. It was just plain wrong and stupid. Them destroying the toilets “AGAIN” does not excuse this stupidity and bad taste of whoever dropped these dolls over the top tier nor should it stop every decent minded Celtic supporter from condemning it.

It was wrong on so many levels. I had hoped it was a photoshop job but sadly it wasn’t.

Excusing it is on a level with the state aid guy trying to say the toilets were destroyed by Celtic before the Sevconians fans arrived at ground just to point blame at them.

Still delighted with the victory and the good hiding we gave them from second gear. :-)))

Hope you are well. I got involved in a stupid argument here on the topic of the Dolls and am probably less inclined to charity towards those involved than you – probably a character flaw of mine- but think one of our number ( I think TET) got it right when he said that it probably seemed like a good idea in the pub the night before. I was brought up both within my own family but listening to men like Jock Stein , Bob Kelly and Billy McNeill to know that supporting Celtic meant learning a sense of responsibility to Celtic, thinking about what you were doing. I have let the club down occasionally and those guys let us all down. And I hope they know it.

Your comments on Brendan are spot on. It is as SFTB pointed out, early days but so far he is very impressive. We might well get cuffed on Tuesday – hell we might get cuffed in every game in the Champions’ League- but I think that unlike three years ago we will be a better team as we walk off our last game than we are when we take the field on Tuesday. And it will be because of Brendan.

I was shocked at seeing the blow ups hanging in the JS stand. One appeared to have a red white and blue scarf, another appeared to have an orange sash. I said to those around me in the North Stand that I thought it signified their suicide 4 years ago. Dreadful poor taste though.

  18. Gerryfaethebrig

To be honest. The squirrel (is that a new excuse for bad taste?) was created by our own and should be condemned. Unless of course you are happy with some acting like Huns. Hunnish behaviour is 100% unacceptable at Celtic Park ether its Huns or stupid Celtic fans creating the squirrel you are happy to I accept as a squirrel.

  19. The blow up dolls were a disgrace. I know the Boyd family well they lived across the road from my parents for years. I used to drink regularly with Kris’s Dad and his Mum a retired nurse and his sister helped my mother (RIP) regularly in her latter years.

The individuals concerned should be ashamed of themselves. Bloody disgrace.

Whether it was aimed at the Boyd family or not. Hunnish behaviour in the extreme!
