Queens Park (twice) Vale of Leven, Rangers (twice) and Aberdeen have all won the Scottish Cup three consecutive seasons. The latter were the last, in 1984. Celtic have won the old trophy 38 times, more than any others, but have never won the Cup three time in-a-row.
They successfully retained the Cup only eight times, the first time in 1901, when they beat Queens Park in the final, having despatched Rangers in the previous final. It looked good for three-in-a-row the following season, when Celtic faced Hearts in the final, but despite goals from McOustra, Quinn and McMahon, Hearts scored four and the trophy went to Edinburgh.
The record could then have been put right in 1909. Celtic got the better of Hearts in the 1907 final, and St Mirren a year later, but 1909 was the year the Cup was withheld after a riot, a fire and many injured Celtic and Rangers fans.
Celtic dominated the Scottish Cup in this era. Dundee won the Cup in 1910, the only side apart from Celtic who won it between 1906 and 1913. And without wanting to write too much about them getting the better of us, it was Hearts, again, who in 1913 stopped Celtic, after successes against Hamilton and Clyde in the two previous finals. That loss to Hearts also cost Celtic four-in-a-row, as they won the trophy again in 1914.
Fans in this era would have grown used to retaining the Scottish Cup, but it would be an incredible 60 years before Celtic would do so again. Celtic beat Rangers in 1971 and Hibs in 1972, but lost 3-2 to Rangers in 1973’s Centenary Scottish Cup Final. That loss actually denied Celtic five Cup wins in-a-row, as they beat Dundee United in the 1974 final and oldco Airdrie in 1975 (my first Scottish Cup Final). The 1976 attempt at three-in-a-row ended at Fir Park, when Motherwell won their third round tie.
The closest we came to three-in-a-row was 1990. Having beat Dundee United in our own Centenary Season Cup Final in 1988, we denied Rangers a treble to beat them in the 1989 Final. Celtic had a miserable 1989-90 season, but a fourth round win over Rangers cleared the way for a run to Hampden and Aberdeen. 90 minutes and extra time came and went without a goal. 18 penalties could not separate the teams, but after Anton Rogan missed Celtic’s 10th kick, Aberdeen scored to win.
Martin O’Neill’s Celtic won the cup in their imperious 2003-04 season, with Henrik Larsson bidding farewell by despatching Dunfermline, then Martin bid farewell after a far-from imperious 2004-05 season with a Cup Final win over Dunfermline.
Celtic’s next opportunity to win three consecutive Scottish Cups came in 2006, but, alas Roy Keane and Du Wei’s debut, also the latter’s final game, is remembered warmly by Clyde fans. Which brings us to tomorrow. After completing the Invincible Treble by beating Aberdeen in the 2017 Final, Celtic achieved the Double Treble last season when they overcame Motherwell in the Final.
In our long and illustrious history, on only eight occasions have we retained the Scottish Cup and we have never achieved what will be attempted tomorrow. If it helps you contextualise how much an achievement the Treble Treble would be, the Scottish Cup treble alone has been an as yet impossible task.
For as long as Celtic’s history is written, these days will live in legend. Let’s make it happen.

Again exactly, not getting the excuses in early but this season from Athens to Brendan to now has been as mixed up a season as I can remember… I agree with Greenpinata/Jobo nearly every Celtic fan young & old bought into Brendan …. no animosity from me these days, Brendan’s time was amazing as much as his midnight flit amazed ! Tomorrow is all about the here and now, not our previous manager not our next manager … Neil, Broony & the bhoys with big Billy & Stevie Chalmers never far from our thoughts … again it’s been a strange season but I suppose that’s Celtic :-)

Our academy has produced some very good players over the years, it has produced good squad players and it has given players a career in football if not at celtic.’

I think NFL’s point is that the players who are regarded as having been ‘produced’ by these academies would probably have been just as good if academies didn’t exist.
And it’s not being through an academy that produces loyalty, it’s being a fan.

The Most Distressful Country
A billion light years ago when CQN first started I posted something that was completely true, or at least I believed to be completely true.
I soon shed this ridiculous ethical stance, as anyone who ever read any of my nonsense probably sussed, and ended up in the world of allegory, imagination, mind control, parable and metaphysical lunacy.
However that first ‘truth’ has remained with me as a stalwart pillar in my relationship with my football team and our mutual interaction.
So, especially for those who may waken up tomorrow (or possibly not go to sleep in the first place) with a hunger for fingernails, a desperation for Valium, a disdain for laxative and a sensitivity that sees a clock’s tic-toc sound like a firing squad loading their rifles, then this is what has always stood me in good stead.
1. If I think we are going to lose, and we do then I have been miserable the whole day.
2. If I think we are going to lose and we win, then I have been miserable for half the day, ecstatic after the match but in quiet moments, angry with myself over my lack of steel.
3. However If I think we are going to win, and by some chance we lose, then I have not only been happy and positive right up until that final whistle seals our fate, but because of this nurtured approach, any defeat soon fades into irrelevance and the prospect of the next game and the next win takes over.
4. Of course If I believe we will win and lo and behold we do, then not only have I been deliriously happy before, during and after the game and the world spins through space to the sound of singing and laughter, and the amount of cash I spend over bar/chip shop counter/ curry house etc, sees me feeding the children of retailers and suppliers and provide fuel for multi national agricultures and industries across the globe….and MOST IMPORTANTLY I take another step closer to my ultimate ambition instilled in me by my Dad in moments of paternal advice….”Whatever you do Matt, don’t end up the richest man in the graveyard!”
So tomorrow as always I believe we will win and when we do the universe will ring loudly with music and banter, economies across the earth will see GDP beyond the dreams of avarice, children will laugh and dance and I will take one more step closer to the skintest and happiest of pauper’s graves knowing that when I pass across that mystical veil, the ferryman better not be expecting payment.
So if anyone who has Lenny’s ear could just pass on to him that he may only see a ‘Treble Treble’, but all of us in the stands and terraces, in pubs and clubs, on couches, chairs and floors in front of the telly, with wirelesses out of windows in far flung territories and internet streams on computers, tablets and phones…well we also see that ‘Treble treble’ but our utter faith in the win gives us also an even bigger vision where with that historic victory we will inject the hormones of teenage growth into the world’s financial systems, peace will break out across the globe, disease will be eradicated, the lamb will lie down with the lamb and MOST OF ALL …I will realise mine and my dad’s dream dream of an eternal penniless but peaceful rest.
So no pressure then….and all it takes is a wee bit of belief that with a win tomorrow mankind will discover its true meaning…..oh and my Bookie’s line will come in! ( I promise to spend it before “you know what!”)
