Forster proves a wiser choice last year than Sandomierski

982

News that Fraser Forster has signed a long term contract with Celtic, who will pay Newcastle United £2m for his services, adds some welcome stability ahead of the Champions League qualifiers.  Buying a new, first-choice, keeper is fraught with the kind of difficulties Neil Lennon would rather avoid.

Last summer we looked at Croatian international Stipe Pletikosa, who performed at the European Championships, but he failed to impress during his trial period at Celtic, including a poor performance against Wolves at Celtic Park.

Last year we also looked at Polish cap, Gregorz Sandomierski, who subsequently went to Belgian club racing Genk for €3m, but he failed to make a competitive appearance for Genk and was shipped back to Poland on loan. By comparison, Forster, who turned 24 on St Patrick’s Day, cemented his place with the champions.

Last year Celtic concluded a provisional deal with Newcastle to sign Fraser on a permanent deal this summer but although player and club were both keen to do business, negotiations took until the end of the players’ summer break, perhaps reflecting a tightening of Celtic’s finances ahead of what could be a period of financial uncertainty in the Scottish game.

  1. Good to see Fraser sign on.like many, I was initially not impressed by the big guy, but he has come on a ton recently, & there is every reason to think that he’ll continue to develop & end up a really top class keeper.

Given the financial uncertainties which Scottish football in general, & our club in particular, faces following the, entirely welcome & justified, expiry of our former rivals, I doubt we can expect many more new players in, unless of course we sell some of our current players. I’m guessing that we will want to punt Ki, a player I like a lot but as 5th choice midfielder, unless we suddenly decide we want to adopt the Spain approach & play no forwards, it would make sense to sell him on for decent money. I think that we might need to sell more than just Ki if we are going to spend any significant money, though.

On der (former) hun- I can’t help feel (maybe fear, more than feel) that they’ll end up in Division 1 as a result of a stitch up, unless there are any more revelations about what they were up to which emerge. Now would be a good time for more EBT stuff to emerge..or for the FTTT to issue their judgement…

So we signed Forster. Great news.

Can we sign Clive Allan now to partner him?

  6. I was watching the pole vault final in the athletics yesterday and was reminded of this,

Chic Murray said he went to the Olympics and he met this guy carrying a long narrow tube-like piece of apparatus

    “Are you a pole vaulter?”

“No. I am German but how did you know my name is Walter”

    Sorry but blame Chic.

Interesting to read that Airdrie will ‘abstain’ from any newco vote; we were fined £1000 for doing so regarding Dundee last year.

There’ll be a vote – just that there may be more than Ballantyne force to sit it out…

  10. Regarding Ballantyne, why is this big news we already knew he was a butter hun and the pictures with his RFF badge on months ago proves this.

  11. I think they are all waiting for the formal rejection of a newco being admitted to the SPL, then the shift will hit the fans, their fans I hope

    OG Rafferty,

Ballantyne now quoted as saying that there will be no vote: merely a meeting to chat over the options available, discuss the document sent out to the SFL clubs and gauge the opinions of the member clubs.

  14. Monaghan1900 on

    When a vote’s not really a vote – it’s a hingmy. From STV:

‘No formal vote will be held on Tuesday as the SFL seeks to gauge opinion on Rangers’ entry before a final decision is made.

Ballantyne said: “It is not a formal vote, we are just looking for a steer from the clubs.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen. We are going to completely run through the document sent to all SFL clubs last week and asses all the various options available.” ‘

haven’t been to Prague for a few years(2007) but O’Che’s Pub was a good spot. In old town(stare mesto) just off Karlova which is a windy road that ends in the iconic Karlova Bridge. Good outdoor pub/club just at the bridge called Lavka. Basically you can’t go wrong in Prague, just watch your wallets/bags at night if around Wenceslas square.

Ballantyne, who is also the president of the SFL and a board member of the Scottish FA, feels it would be a conflict of interest to vote either way on the Rangers question.

He said: “We are going to abstain from voting because Airdrie could benefit from a particular decision.”
