Forster proves a wiser choice last year than Sandomierski

982

News that Fraser Forster has signed a long term contract with Celtic, who will pay Newcastle United £2m for his services, adds some welcome stability ahead of the Champions League qualifiers.  Buying a new, first-choice, keeper is fraught with the kind of difficulties Neil Lennon would rather avoid.

Last summer we looked at Croatian international Stipe Pletikosa, who performed at the European Championships, but he failed to impress during his trial period at Celtic, including a poor performance against Wolves at Celtic Park.

Last year we also looked at Polish cap, Gregorz Sandomierski, who subsequently went to Belgian club racing Genk for €3m, but he failed to make a competitive appearance for Genk and was shipped back to Poland on loan. By comparison, Forster, who turned 24 on St Patrick’s Day, cemented his place with the champions.

Last year Celtic concluded a provisional deal with Newcastle to sign Fraser on a permanent deal this summer but although player and club were both keen to do business, negotiations took until the end of the players’ summer break, perhaps reflecting a tightening of Celtic’s finances ahead of what could be a period of financial uncertainty in the Scottish game.

No problem …….ANY team in EPL top 4 = CL

  2. The FACT that Souness (a violent man if ever there was) received payments via an e.b.t. TEN years after his ‘contract’ at rfc ended is prime facie,de facto evidence that rfc was a criminal enterprise. Apologies if that sounds like pompous harrumphing….it’s still the truth.

And rfc is still dead, even though the msm is still applying electricity to the corpse.

Everything that has happened re. rfc is reflective of the bankster/gangster economy running wild in UKplc for the last 30 years…..and all that is unravelling, too.

(It’s not only football that is bust. The whole system needs shown the red card, penalised and censured.)

Once some contrition is shown, and reparation made then, and only then, will things progress.

Meanwhile the whole shambling shebang lurches onward.

  3. happy fraser has signed up, think a powerful centreback and celtre forward are needed to help the team out.

although the squad still needs trimmed to accommodate new faces, otherwise we’ll just get other players that are no better than the one’s that have/ or will leave.

any other clubs said no to newco today?

I believe Longmuir at the SFL commented that the lawyers are looking at the voting % required, another way of saying we are trying to get it as low as possible.

My main point though is that if you abstain, it is as good as a NO, assuming you need a certain % to vote YES for it to be passed, unless of course they change that as well and declare that anyone who decides not to vote, will have that transferred to the YES numbers.

If they need 75% of the clubs to vote YES to allow them into SFL Div 1, then by abstaining from the vote, does that not have the same effect as voting NO??

30 teams get a vote and so 8 teams need to block this. If one team abstains that leaves 29 and SFL rules are that “75% of votes cast” so abstention not counted. If only 29 teams vote, still need 8 teams to block it so in this case it counts as a YES vote.

If more abstain, then less teams are needed to block it, eg. If 10 teams abstain, then only 6 NOs are needed to block proposals.

  13. I thought their funeral was done? I mean, they are a defunct business now. So, all that’s left really is the reading of the will (that should be a hoot) and the discovery of all the dirty little secrets and closeted skeletons. Unexpectedly dead,so like a gangster ambushed, there’s been no time to cover up all the misdeeds and the confederates are now running round like headless chickens, scared out of their wits.

And any new pretender to the vacant throne will have to prove themselves. Either that,or there’ll just be the unholy mess left to be mourned over by the flunkies (in this case,’fans’).

But for the foreseeable future, the blue gang is leaderless, unless of course you want to count Bomber Brown…..

I think you have won your bet. When Cardiff were in the FA Cup Final in 2008 there was some dispute over whether they would qualify for Europe had they won it. The FA said no, UEFA said yes. WHen they were in the League Cup final last season, it was confirmed they would go into the Europa if they won it.

    Good old AIRDRIE.

  18. Jim Ballantyne’s conflict of interest is that he is President of the Scottish Football League and serves on the board of the SFA.

We can play the conspiracy theory card in that he had an RFFF badge on at a friendly in Linfield, and while there is truth in it, with a tin hat on he is conflicted by his SFL position. Quite why someone with his past and present is involved in the SFL and the SFA is of course part of the same equation.

  19. Bloke109 – that would not prevent him from allowing his club to cast a vote, you are allowed to hold office in both organisations as well as running a club

I don’t think it would be 75% of the clubs which vote.

It would surely be 75% of the member clubs eligible to vote.

So abstention must be a NO vote.

Cheers buddy, understand it fully now. Do you know if there is a number that have to cast a vote to make the vote stand? Say for example 20 abstain, will the result stand.

  22. The Prince of Goalkeepers

No surprise that they don’t know what to do as they have come up with these plans for one reason and haven’t thought through the logistics nor the consequences.

The SFA/SFL have 4 times in the past 20 years admitted new teams to the SFL:

1994 – ICT and Ross County; (to increase League to 40 teams)

2000 – Elgin and Peterhead; (With set up of SPL to increase SFL to 30 teams)

2002 – Gretna; (following demise of Airdrieoneans)

2008 – Annan Athletic. (following demise of Gretna)

Incompetent and untrustworthy they might be, but surely to goodness they followed some procedure to admit all these teams. Why not just follow the same procedure when considering a new application from a new team to join the SFL. Spartans want a place, as do a couple of others and Sevco.

Follow due process in an open and transparent way and then you don’t have to try and gerrymander a voting system to get a particular delinquent club a second chance.

//’According to reports Celtic passed on a move for Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

The Daily Mail claims the Hoops were offered the chance to sign the former England keeper on loan but they opted instead to pursue a £2 million permanent deal for Fraser Forster.

Robinson is instead expected to complete a £1 million move to Besiktas.

The Turkish side are on the hunt for a new No 1 after veteran Rustu Recber announced his retirement.

The Rovers stopper has decided not to stick around following the club’s relegation to the Championship last season.

Robinson has a year left on his contract at Ewood Park having joined the club from Spurs for £3.5million in 2008.’ //

  24. Why does Ballantyne just not send somebopdy else to vote on Clydebanks behalf?

  25. It depends exactly what the vote is in the SPL what the rules are.

To reconfigure things and allow Sevco straight into division 1 would surely involve rule changes, and that would normally mean a 66% vote of all members is required.

If it gets to voting on a club to fill a vacant position then a simple majority is required.

I’m guessing that once Sevco’s position is decided, the old Rangers will officialy expire ?

At that point, all ties to Oldco will be cut and we’ll see a feeding frenzy amongst the MSM, with them all trying to get the juiciest stories on Oldco to seel their rags to the gullible scottish readership.

I’m still staggered how much credence is placed in what’s printed in hardcopy media. I guess it’s easier to believe what you read, than to say ” really ? is that true ?”, while you’re sitting reading it over your morning tea/coffee.

The majority of people who read these ‘newspapers’ should never be allowed out on their own, and most certainly, should never be allowed to make decisions on anything other than whether they should eat the booger on the end of their finger or wipe it on the window they’ve been licking all morning.
