Forster proves a wiser choice last year than Sandomierski

982

News that Fraser Forster has signed a long term contract with Celtic, who will pay Newcastle United £2m for his services, adds some welcome stability ahead of the Champions League qualifiers.  Buying a new, first-choice, keeper is fraught with the kind of difficulties Neil Lennon would rather avoid.

Last summer we looked at Croatian international Stipe Pletikosa, who performed at the European Championships, but he failed to impress during his trial period at Celtic, including a poor performance against Wolves at Celtic Park.

Last year we also looked at Polish cap, Gregorz Sandomierski, who subsequently went to Belgian club racing Genk for €3m, but he failed to make a competitive appearance for Genk and was shipped back to Poland on loan. By comparison, Forster, who turned 24 on St Patrick’s Day, cemented his place with the champions.

Last year Celtic concluded a provisional deal with Newcastle to sign Fraser on a permanent deal this summer but although player and club were both keen to do business, negotiations took until the end of the players’ summer break, perhaps reflecting a tightening of Celtic’s finances ahead of what could be a period of financial uncertainty in the Scottish game.

  1. The Management Committee of Brechin City FC will refrain from issuing any public comment on the current situation in respect of Rangers FC until after the meeting of all 30 SFL clubs at Hampden Park on Tuesday 3rd July.

The Club Chairman and Vice Chairman will attend the Club meeting to gather information, contribute to the discussion and debate on the day. It is important to note that no vote will take place at the meeting but information will be provided for Club’s to take back to their boards and committees. The Committee’s intention will be to discuss these proposals in full at the next management committee on Thursday of this week and at the members AGM on 11th July before they are put to the vote at an EGM of the Scottish Football League. Anyone who cannot attend the AGM and who wishes to forward a view can do so by email to secretary@brechincityfc.com.

This is without doubt an unprecedented time in Scottish football, and it is of paramount importance that any decision must be in the best interests of the game as a whole, but should in the first instance protect the well being and future of Brechin City Football Club.

Members of the club are season ticket holders. Knowing some of the board personally, I’d tend towards them voting for Sevco to be parachuted in, although the members of the club will be very much split.

Hopefully, memories are long in Brechin.

  2. just looking back regarding celtic’s stance in relation to making a statement about newco. throughout this affair i have changed my mind about 10 times, sometimes i wanted the club to say something and sometimes i have thought the opposite, so its a good thing i am not in change of our club.

for what its worth, i think celtic’s position will be made clear tomorrow and at that time we can all move on with regards our views. what i mean is simply this, if celtic fc advocate for newco in the spl then its game over for me, i’ll always love celtic, i’ll never feel the same about her again. i suspect i will not be the only one

  3. The current board are the very same folk who were ready to empty the singing section of CP ie: The Green Brigade to suit the whimpers of the LL/SNP/MSM etc

until…..Lennons Lions made a connection with the singers and, the board had to take a back seat as it were but, for me, the board showed their TRUE colours during that episode.

You, like everyone else on here are entitled to your opinion.

My opinion is this. If our board from any era took on the MSM or the SFA they would be fighting a war they could not possibly win in the most bigotted wee country in the world.

I have 3 sons, 1 grandson with another 3 on the way. Our board has delivered the financial stability to allow my grandsons to watch the Glasgow Celtic like me for the rest of their lives.

FChristS be happy that the scum are officially dead and stop listening to the MSM.

Olw Neganon- this long and weary drawn out farce is being hampered by the sheer volume of verbiage expounded on it; what it has lacked has been decisive action.

    Hi Ghuys

Regarding mr traynors and mr ballantynes concern for newco I would have thought they would have been champing at the bit to see that proper rules and regulations are carried out with regards to any new club entering the scottish league system, after all one is an office bearer and the other is a leading journalist in a leading scottish newspaper. No that didn’t wash with me neither, try again.

mr traynor and mr ballantyne are representatives of a club known as Airdrie one as a club office bearer and the other as a supporter they know all about sanctions and the deeds other clubs can put into play. I’m sure when the old Airdrieonians got it up em they would be waiting for the time when fair play would be implemented.

Originally from Coatbridge I know all about Airdrie folk they are a fiercely staunch churchgoing race and I am sure they would assume that the people living and praying amongst them would be advocating fair play and live to see

the day when the Airdrie dog would have its day and the people who sent them to the sword for financial negligence all those years ago would one day

    get their comeuppance.

Or possibly the Airdrie folk now realise that they have had lurkers within their midst all this time and all those so called ambassadors for Airdrie really wanted was a ringside seat in the old pavilion to watch that old union jack being hoisted aloft at half time against the Celtic.

One that stays in my mind strongest was that of Alan McLaren from the diets. I recall him doing similar with Gazza, where he (mis??)quoted TB re ‘any player offered to Rankers being similarly offered to us’.

I thought his enthusiasm was faked back then, in a ‘build up the anticipation before smacking them down’ kind of way. Was quite an insidious method to be honest: get us onside and sweep our hope away whilst simultaneously showcasing the efficiency of our rivals methods of business at the same time as denigrating our own.

There seems to be a desperate last effort push by the hun apologists in the media to coax, cajole and threaten.

None of us know whether SPL or SFL chairmen will succumb to that pressure – but I doubt that they will do so in sufficient numbers to save Newco from the ignominy of Div 3 – but in reality, we don’t dont know.

What we de know is that the reaction of other Scottish supporters and their clubs to blatant gerrymandering has overcome our wildest expectations – and that they will deservedly take the credit ‘for doing the right thing’ if things continue down the current path.

Whats not to like about that?

Beyond the satisfcation of ‘putting the boot in’ or allaying a bit of paranoia, why would Celtic even attempt anything that would hijack and possibly derail the process?

Where I do expect Celtic to be exerting pressure is to ensure that investigations into dual contracts and tainted trophies is not just conveniently forgotten now that the Rangers have died. But thats a differnt story and should not be this weeks focus…

    Celtic Football Club statement

By: Newsroom Staff on 10 May, 2012 09:34

CELTIC Football Club has today issued a statement regarding the ongoing situation in Scottish football.

As the Club prepares for the final league match of this season, when the SPL trophy will be presented to Celtic after Sunday’s game against Hearts, Chief Executive Peter Lawwell also thanked the Celtic supporters for their unwavering backing of the team throughout the campaign, which has helped to deliver the title back to its rightful place.

The Chief Executive said: “We are fully aware of our supporters´ concerns regarding the current situation across Scottish football and the breadth of opinion within our supporter base.

“The issues are complex and there is much uncertainty. Indeed, the situation repeatedly changes, even on a daily basis. I am sure our supporters understand that these developments are receiving our full focus and attention.

“Our guiding principle is that we will do what is in the best interests of Celtic Football Club and our supporters, consistent with upholding the interests and reputation of Scottish football.

Had to log on and wish my fellow EK man and neighbour Jobo a very happy birthday – and of course to his mum as well. Looks like the corruption of the game I left behind last week continues – the SFL Document has been savaged by a number of clubs and should their stance continue like this, we should remember that not all non Celtic fans are automatically enemies. Look forward to an interesting couple of days which will define every football fan’s feelings for both their Club and the authorities that run the game in Scotland.
