Forster proves a wiser choice last year than Sandomierski

982

News that Fraser Forster has signed a long term contract with Celtic, who will pay Newcastle United £2m for his services, adds some welcome stability ahead of the Champions League qualifiers.  Buying a new, first-choice, keeper is fraught with the kind of difficulties Neil Lennon would rather avoid.

Last summer we looked at Croatian international Stipe Pletikosa, who performed at the European Championships, but he failed to impress during his trial period at Celtic, including a poor performance against Wolves at Celtic Park.

Last year we also looked at Polish cap, Gregorz Sandomierski, who subsequently went to Belgian club racing Genk for €3m, but he failed to make a competitive appearance for Genk and was shipped back to Poland on loan. By comparison, Forster, who turned 24 on St Patrick’s Day, cemented his place with the champions.

Last year Celtic concluded a provisional deal with Newcastle to sign Fraser on a permanent deal this summer but although player and club were both keen to do business, negotiations took until the end of the players’ summer break, perhaps reflecting a tightening of Celtic’s finances ahead of what could be a period of financial uncertainty in the Scottish game.

If anything….the MSM rip-it out of any Celtic manager just by,

one GENUINE Celtic supporter on our bored since Willie Haughey.

If true, that’s his loss. I’d rather have Forster. He’s young, has potential, doesn’t seem to be injury prone… oh, and he’s a decent goalie too.

Celtic’s silence is very eloquent; history has taught us that anything we do say will be subjected to intense Hunguffrage and completely and deliberately misinterpreted.

This debate needs fewer contributions, not more.

On 14th February a Light Blue whale washed up on the beach of Scottish football, what is needed is someone to pinch their nose and remove the stinking carcase.

You are afraid neganon. Well I am not , but you are letting your fears guide your views and its the sort of John Brown school of thinking. So did you actually contact Celtic?

  6. Good mornng all from a damp but very cheery East Kilbride. My sincere thanks to jtsTICks for his earlier good wishes on the occasion of my birthday. I have the honour of sharing my big day with Old Lady , my dear mother, who turns 92 today.

The Brians Wilson and Quinn are genuine Celtic supporters, it’s perverse to suggest otherwise.

John Reid may not have been a great chairman but he’s a genuine supporter.

  8. Neganon2,

You describe the other passionate supporters in Scottish football as a “baying pack” so to show love for your club turns you into a raging mob, the only raging mob I have seen in this scenario comes from the South Side.

You didn’t actually answer the question have you let our board know about your concerns and fears about Sevco in the SPL/SFL, yes or no?

The black hole you inhabit can never be filled by anything Celtic could say…

The fear you accuse Celtic of is in fact your own your fear that Celtic might let you down…

  9. Neganon

You claim that the Celtic support ‘deserve’ a clear statement of intent from the club.

I have to say that the vast majority of Celtic supporters that I’ve spoken to are happy with the stance that the club have taken.

    What do they deserve?

    Your spot on about Traynor.

How he has managed to get himself into such a position of influence in Scottish football is beyond me . He has had the freedom to push his agendas on bbc shortbread and in the record . Who knows what hold all these villians have over each other?

We saw the way the Murdochs operated . Luring and then trapping people in their web.

  12. I just read the statement from my hometown team, Stranraer. I have to say I that I am very proud of the stance they have taken. Despite the large Rangers fanbase in the town they have made a statement that probably goes further than that issued by any other club in the country – and I include Mad Vlad’s poorly structured but highly entertaining rant in that.

They essentially state that rules should not be bent for any team and anyone shoudl be able to apply for the vacancy left by the now deceased Rangers FC. Every application should then be taken on its merit.

The unholy mess created solely by the tax evasion and cheating of one club still threatens to pull down Scottish football. If more clubs took the stance of Stranraer, listened to their fans and ignored the media-led attempts to bin sporting integrity, we might just witness the greatest change ever seen in Scottish football. Imagine a league shaped by the fans and not by sponsorship or television money. You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one.

I have been critical of our CEO in the past, mainly on the basis of his remuneration, and his mistakes in the Willo Flood window, but to suggest he isn’t a true Celtic supporter is ridiculous

Whilst on the subject, if you criticize when you think there is something wrong, then you must give praise for a job well done. The job the board and the CEO have done, on all issues in the last 18 months has been first class

The club have played the current circumstances perfectly

I also note he talks about what happens “if” the Appellate Tribunal re-convenes. I wonder of the SFA will announce soon what is happening with that. I am sure Lord Carloway has a summer holiday to go on!

It also seems to be the case, although this is not a surprise of course, that in Mr Green’s mind “the good of Scottish football” = the preservation of “Rangers”.

  19. NL in NZ – how do you no that? NO statement from Celtic has declared their hand. They have danced round the edges. I dont know what you mean about Celtic going down the Sevco route? And what exactly am I afraid of?

Midfield Maestro – Celtic have not made any statements that are clear – they have been very careful not to. I have never advocated Celtic speaking all the time – but to clearly state their position on this would be nice.

Rogue Leader I am not slating anyone – but I cannot see any other reason for Celtic’s silence as complicity.

Tim Malone – of course we will get the guff from the media – but who takes them seriously any more. As for being afraid of a “reaction” see my response to NL.

  22. the next 48 hours will shape scottish football for a decade.

It is either the road to a fair sporting roadmap to gradually improve the whole game versus aiding and abetting corruption. Celtic will do their talking behind the scenes and in the meetings. There is no need to give words to Jabba et al to twist and use for their own means.

As scottish football follows the moral compass it will need to shed Doncaster and Ogilvie as they are part of the problem….not the solution.

  30. The reason behind Celtic not issuing a statement is three fold IMHO.

    1. As we all know the MSM will twist any statement made, the MSM have no qualms about inciting the hoardes in to action, that action would more than likely end up with several Celtic supporters in hospital or worse.

    2. Legal action – there is a possibility that Celtic PLC will be taking legal action depending on how this all unfolds – a wise man will keep his powder dry until it is needed.

    3. It does not seem to matter what the Celtic board release as a statement as it always seems to divide the support, with many eager to get on their soapboxes and gived the board a kicking to progress their own agendas, this is then seized on by the MSM.

I have no doubts that the very capable members of the Celtic board are active behind closed doors.

Celtic are not the ones going down the plug hole here, sit back and enjoy the ride!
