Forster proves a wiser choice last year than Sandomierski

982

News that Fraser Forster has signed a long term contract with Celtic, who will pay Newcastle United £2m for his services, adds some welcome stability ahead of the Champions League qualifiers.  Buying a new, first-choice, keeper is fraught with the kind of difficulties Neil Lennon would rather avoid.

Last summer we looked at Croatian international Stipe Pletikosa, who performed at the European Championships, but he failed to impress during his trial period at Celtic, including a poor performance against Wolves at Celtic Park.

Last year we also looked at Polish cap, Gregorz Sandomierski, who subsequently went to Belgian club racing Genk for €3m, but he failed to make a competitive appearance for Genk and was shipped back to Poland on loan. By comparison, Forster, who turned 24 on St Patrick’s Day, cemented his place with the champions.

Last year Celtic concluded a provisional deal with Newcastle to sign Fraser on a permanent deal this summer but although player and club were both keen to do business, negotiations took until the end of the players’ summer break, perhaps reflecting a tightening of Celtic’s finances ahead of what could be a period of financial uncertainty in the Scottish game.

If, the Celtic hierarchy new all the cheating was going on

why did they continue to take our money

instead of blowing the whistle ?

  2. Top of the morning to you all from a sunny Fife.

Not a Celtic topic but the following is very worrying—to me at least!

“An already relentless melting of the Arctic greatly accelerated this summer, a warning sign that some scientists worry could mean global warming has passed an ominous tipping point. One speculates that summer sea ice might be gone in just five years.

Greenland’s ice sheet melted nearly 19 billion tons more than the previous high mark, and the volume of Arctic sea ice at summer’s end was half what it was just four years earlier, according to new NASA satellite data obtained by The Associated Press.

“The Arctic is screaming,” said Mark Serreze, senior scientist at the government’s snow and ice data center in Boulder, Colo.

Just last year, two top scientists surprised their colleagues by projecting that the Arctic sea ice was melting so rapidly that it could disappear entirely by the summer of 2040.

This week, after reviewing his own new data, NASA climate scientist Jay Zwally said: “At this rate, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions.”

Adding his weight to the growing number of respected commentators warning of pending disaster is Walter Smith, ex-manager of Rangers and Scotland who stated: “If Rangers are not allowed into the Premier League next season the volume of hot-air released into the atmosphere by James Traynor and the rest of the Scottish Masonic Media could raise Ozone Levels by 80% with catastrophic consequences.”

pffft. have you actually read the blog since 2010, or any of barcabhoy’s posts?

  5. Starry – Celtic letting the support down – will never happen eh? Its not like they have a history of it! Have I let the Board know of my concerns? Do I have to – dont they know?

Hamiltontim – with respect I could equally say that the straw poll of many Celtic supporters I know have expressed grave concern at Celtic’s silence. We deserve to know of Celtic’s official position with regards to Sevco in the SPL. Dead simple.

I honestly think you all need shaken from your slumber. I have thoroughly enjoyed the demise of Rangers. But Celtic are once again letting us all down. When smaller clubs, who are probably in more danger than us, take a clear stance and we do not – you have to ask yoursef why. But it seems most on this site are unwilling to ask the hard questions. That is what brought Rangers down.

  6. oh it makes me laugh all this safe sevco stuff and all the compromises he’s (greens) ready to make? keep us in the spl and we’ll back changes to voting structure, sure the clubs will do that anyway without the dead club, so offering nothing. better cut of revenue from celtic and ranger’s (newco), good of him to offer more of our income to everyone, but again if this club starts from the bottom and carry over the same fans, then that fairer share of revenue will already be estabilshed on their FIRST EVER SEASON in the spl given the change in voting structure. accept embargo, oh dear, should they not have done that already? although accepting responsibility for their wrongdoings is a massive step to be far, pitty its not heart felt. accepting a points deduction for staying in the spl after cheating every club and fan in the country for 20 + years, and he might even take it for more than one season, jesus christ, he likes a laugh. its like killing somebody then asking for community service because your willing to say sorry. he’ll (green) pay all football debt, seriously, i think that that has all sorts of implications for newco, would it not? paying some creditors and not others?, is that a decision he can make? and WAIT FOR IT, the big public apology – that should have come as soon as he took over and he had better tell the ranger (oldco) fans that their club was in the wrong rather than being wronged!!!!!

it seems to me he is offering nothing that cant/ will not be put into place. lets be honest if newco carry over the oldco fans then they’ll be in the premier league in 3 years as it would be unfair to place a transfer embargo on a newco. with a strucutral change, which would see larger leagues, they could be up in 2 seasons.

everything green offers is an afront to sporting competition and to start in the top flight of a league strucutre is to start on the wrong note, green hope to get into the bottom teir and seek to gain promotion and the newco will have earned the right to play in the top flight, starting at the top table cannot be allowed to take place and is the END for everyone and i include myself in that.

this is not about simply punishing rangers, its about making sure sports comes before money. money will come thereafter. in the meantime a lot of sfl clubs will benefit from your participation in the sfl lower leagues.

Martin42 of this parish, and a very wise mhan, said years ago that there a few people on CQN would rather be right than be supporters of a successful Celtic, which is the same as saying they would prefer to see things work out badly for Celtic to be able to say, “I told you so”, than to see things work out well for the club.

And for the avoidance of doubt, Martin didn’t appear to me to think this was a good thing for this sainted blog.

  13. The “silence” from Celtic on this has resulted in 3 things in my opinion,

    1. A totally predicatable in fight amongst the support, but hey thats nothing new.

    2. An at times blatant attempt by the media to drag Celtic into the mire that Costcuttingco FC caused, and the Governing bodies refused to deal with.

3.By saying nothing Celtic forced the hands of other Clubs albeit via their respective support to make their positions clear.

IF Celtic had led on this publicly, and I would emphasise publicly, the outcry and resulting media frenzy would have gone into overdrive, that was a no win situation for us and would only have served to deflect the attention from its rightful target, Costcuttingco FC.

Sometimes saying nothing brings great rewards, the entire debacle has turned extremely political in nature, in my opinion the politicians at Celtic FC have done the right thing by refusing to disrupt Costcutting FCs implosion, just think if we had become involved we possibly would have missed out on Bomber browns involvement.

Now that would have been something to argue over.

Rest easy, sit back and enjoy the rest of the show.

  15. Vaultbhoy – your post made me smile. Why should we be afraid of the media – they are a shambles and no-one listens to them any more. Of course they will have a go but they are irrelevant. As for taking legal action – Celtic arent allowed to take Legal action or UEFA or FIFA will punish us severly. And how is Celtic saying no to Newco going to divide the support?

A wise man once said don’t interrupt your enemies when they’re making a mistake.

Had Celtic lead the way in advocating the prosecution of rangers for their misdemeanours they would have polarised Scottish football between ourselves and them.

I firmly believe many of the other clubs in that situation would not have supported the Celtic line preferring to side with the less bad alternative.

I think therefore our board have played this issue perfectly.

We will do what we think is right for Celtic and Scottish football.

You couldn’t criticise that even with a different agenda.

  18. Che – do you know what I largely agree with you – past silence has worked well and allowed the other clubs to take a stance. But the time for that is now well and truelly past – there is no reason for us to stay silent now – unless we are supporting Newco that is.

  19. NegAnon2 on 3 July, 2012 at 09:42 said:

So you haven’t let the Board know of your concerns, it was too much for you to write to them and voice your concerns.

If you feel let down by the Celtic board then you are perfectly welcome to express that opinion on here or anywhere else but please don’t presume to speak for me or the rest of the Celtic Support when you say ” But Celtic are once again letting us all down. ”

There are those among us who are happy the way things are going and those who are not, I don’t remember a time when Celtic was any different but to continue to want to punish the board for past mistakes seems futile to me if I was still upset about something that happened several years ago I would take actions to deal with that item that was causing my unhappiness in the present.

And yes you should let the board know of your feelings as maybe then you would feel you had done something constructive to change the way you feel.

    Jabba’s blog:

‘But research has shown the game will lose £16million if Rangers are dumped in the Third Division and frankly that would be too great a loss to an already impoverished business.’

The killer phrase ‘research has shown…’, any time I hear this I know that the author is clutching at straws. It is the last refuge of the half-wit. Jabba is unable to cite his source because the research doesn’t exist.

Jabba claims to be a journalist yet he doesn’t seem to grasp the basics; don’t write something you can’t back up, always question the motivation of a source and if it’s ‘too good to check’, it’s a lie.

Some posters last night remembered Jabba as being ‘pro-tim’ during the early nineties. This is only true to the extent that he was happy to be involved in potentially destroying a club that he clearly detests.

The simple truth is that Jabba is trying to shift tomorrow’s bog roll. He has become increasingly desperate, therefore his copy has become increasingly fantastic.

Mate I understand yours and others frustrations in all of this, I dont think for a minute that the Club supports the Costcuttingcos stance or proposals, the current Board will have learned the lessons of a previous Board in that to ignore the feelings of the supporter base is fraught with difficulties, particularly in this situation, hypothetically, if it became known that Celtic FC supported the Costcuttingco option the consequences could be extremely damaging to the relationship between Board and Support, again its a hypothetical situation and not one Id suggest the Board would consider risking.
