Forster proves a wiser choice last year than Sandomierski

982

News that Fraser Forster has signed a long term contract with Celtic, who will pay Newcastle United £2m for his services, adds some welcome stability ahead of the Champions League qualifiers.  Buying a new, first-choice, keeper is fraught with the kind of difficulties Neil Lennon would rather avoid.

Last summer we looked at Croatian international Stipe Pletikosa, who performed at the European Championships, but he failed to impress during his trial period at Celtic, including a poor performance against Wolves at Celtic Park.

Last year we also looked at Polish cap, Gregorz Sandomierski, who subsequently went to Belgian club racing Genk for €3m, but he failed to make a competitive appearance for Genk and was shipped back to Poland on loan. By comparison, Forster, who turned 24 on St Patrick’s Day, cemented his place with the champions.

Last year Celtic concluded a provisional deal with Newcastle to sign Fraser on a permanent deal this summer but although player and club were both keen to do business, negotiations took until the end of the players’ summer break, perhaps reflecting a tightening of Celtic’s finances ahead of what could be a period of financial uncertainty in the Scottish game.

    thanks for the replies,

i am just wondering when the loss to Scottish football will

break through the £25million barrier,my money is on

wee dawwell to be first to claim it

  2. Secret balot wouldn’t do it.

Fans would boycott on their perception of who did the U-turns and who voted Newco in.

No point in getting the Hun back if the rest (us and others) boycott.

” I go along with the need for integrity in the game, and it’s absolutely vital that rangers are punished, but we have to step back and think of the greater good of the game….far too few people do it……we can’t continue for another 6 months discussing rangers…..find a home for them, move on to the important things ”

Beats me how he can quote the greater good of the game in the knowledge of what is being connived to try to ensure they survive to cheat again, for the next 20 years

  8. Of all the good news of the summer signing Big Fraser is right at the very top.

We have a group of fine players all in their mid 20’s and a few even younger.

If we can afford to keep hold of all of them “in these uncertain financial times” we could have the makings of a mighty fine team.

To complete the team we could do with bringing in an experienced centre half.

There are at least 3 SPL chairmen voting yes in any case (Kilmarnock, Newco themselves and Ross County, maybe another, they are in the minority in any case). That DR story and the Celticminded rumour are spin to put the rest of the chairmen into a tailspin. It won’t work – those kinds of shenanigans are what worsen things for Newco in the eyes of fans of SPL clubs.

Sounds like a bit of a tactical play to cushion fans outrage at a Div1 entry by talking up SPL entry. Also, the Record has to milk the last few sales days.

Bit of a worrying pendulum sway in favour of a rescue plan today. Hard to cut through the propaganda and what Chairmen are actually going to do though.

I cannot see them going down that road ……after all that has happened, any Club which indefensibly contributing to them getting back into the SPL would be the next club to go into administration ….. We would Bhoycott them, the other SPL fans would boycott them, AND THEIR OWN FANS WOULD BOYCOTT THEM ……that’s why they had to declare their decision early …. It is not going to happen, due FAN POWER

If there are “secret talks” between 3SPL chairmen, they should have contacted another 5 chairmen first before wasting everyone’s time.

  25. Cultsbhoy

IMO (and I have not wavered on this since the big man first arrived) FF has improved with every game he has played. Hearts penalty save though was like an adrenalin injection of confidence for him. He still has a bit of work to do in making sure his 18yrd box is owned by him. But since he arrived as a big raw inexperienced keeper he has become vocal (necessity) and is slowly commanding his area. What would help him more than anything would be a settled central defensive partnership.
