From Stein to Deila in the League Cup

667

Jock Stein won his first five League Cups as Celtic manager (no pressure, Ronny) but in the 43 years since we’ve won the trophy only eight times, including yesterday.

There has been a bit of chat that the Treble is a bit easier since Rangers were liquidated, but, if you know your history, you’ll know that’s not really borne out by the facts.

We’ve won three of the last 10 League Cups and lost to Rangers once but the six other defeats in that period have come at the hands of the likes of Morton, St Mirren and Kilmarnock.  What’s more, Falkirk, Hearts (twice) and Morton all knocked us out at Celtic Park.  We haven’t actually lost an away game in the League Cup for over a decade.  25 of our 35 defeats since Stein’s five-in-a-row have come to teams other than Rangers.

Here is a list of our eventual outcomes in the League Cup, winners or those who eliminated us:

2014-15 Winners
Morton
St Mirren
Kilmarnock
Rangers
Hearts
2008-09 Winners
Hearts
Falkirk
2005-06 Winners
Rangers (November 2004 Celtic’s last away defeat in the League Cup)
Hibs
Rangers
Rangers
2000-01 Winners
1999-00 Winners
Airdrie
1997-98 Winners
Hearts
Raith Rovers
Rangers
Aberdeen
Airdrie
Rangers
Aberdeen
Dundee United
Aberdeen
Rangers
Hibs
Dundee United
Rangers
1982-83 Winners
St Mirren
Dundee United
Aberdeen
Rangers
St Mirren
Aberdeen
Rangers
1974-75 Winners
Dundee
Hibs
Partick Thistle
Rangers

At the 40th anniversary of Lisbon I wrote about the 1965-66 until 1969-70 period.  Jock Stein won 12 of the 15 domestic trophies available, five Leagues, five League Cups and two Scottish Cups.  We also won and lost a European Cup Final, while beating champions from Italy, Portugal France and England.

That we went on to win nine-in-a-row disguised the fact that the real glory era ended in 1970.  The last four title winning seasons were not characterised by beating anyone substantial in Europe (notwithstanding the fact that we reached two European Cup semis) and a series of capitulations in League Cup Finals. The downwards trajectory from beating Leeds at Hampden and finishing fifth in the league in 1978 is evident.

Two inferences can be drawn:

Winning trebles is incredibly difficult.  One slip, one bad tackle leading to a red card, and you are up against it.

Teams who aspire to genuine historical greatness never switch off.

We have a ‘never switch off’ manager. No more Mortons, Falkirks or Raith Rovers’.

While you’re busy fixing everything and keeping us all right…..the other night you took a quotation (that I had disagreed with and argued against) and posted it beside my moniker.

Any reasonable viewing of it would have thought I was actually the person who’d said it.

Careless cut and paste? Or shameless poo stirring?

    Only you know.

I’d respectfully ask you not to do it again. Not nice. A tad dishonourable if intentional.

    He’s actually a decent guy.

He said a lot of people he knew ignored him after he joined us.

Said also that he loved playing for us.

Now, he has only told me this face to face in conversation at a sports dinner, so I have no written, documentary, factual bits of paper to show Ernie.

    Big nan

Don’t think pressley was a Celtic player in 2004, and therefore not a teammate of J Kennedy

I think he was a WGS signing around 2006-7 ??

    ………………………………….

    Thanks.

Could never take to the man after the Hampden incident with JK.

  4. It’s funny to see all the Dundee United players crying to the press. Maybe trying to influence officials taking charge Wednesday?

Never liked Jackie Mac anyway. When he left he told lies to the press to damage the club. Wonder if he regrets going to Wolves rather than staying and undoubtedly captaining Celtic to some titles (he would have got a game ahead of the likes of Paul Telfer)

To be honest, I think he would prefer the extra money

  5. Big news in the Scotsman:

‘Dick Advocaat set to take over the reigns at Sunderland.’

Run for the hills, Sunderland shareholders and directors! He’ll want a Blankety-Blank cheque book and pen and you’ll wake up in three years time with your club heading for football basement hell, wondering ‘wtf just happened?’

  6. Rock Tree Bhoy on

It was blatantly obvious JK was in Serious Bother immediately after the infamous tackle, certainly blatantly obvious to anyone on the pitch who could be bothered to check out if he was OK.

  7. To anyone who upsets Jamesgang, or is thinking about it.

He is at least six foot eight inches tall and built like Superman.

(he’s not bad looking either, but I won’t mention that on here)

I take it you missed his apology?

The DU shout for a penalty for me was soft but I do think it was a wee push from Broony. I just hope the msm temper their claim for said penalty with the old adage of “they even up over the season” because last weeks penalty never was in a million years. They’ll point that oot though in the post match analysis.

    Won’t they??

Well played Bhoys one doon two to go.

Apparently the huns had a banner at Aye Brokes on Saturday celebrating a proscribed loyalist terrorist organisation.

Wonder if any action will be taken on this?

    Won’t hold my breath..

Thanks, but it was the tackle on John Kennedy I was looking for.

  18. Monday 16th

I had a wonderful visit today with my mother, father and Marcella. Wonderful, considering the circumstances and the strain which indeed they are surely under.

As I expected, I received a lot of verbal flak from Screws going and coming from the actual visit. Their warped sense of humour was evident in their childish taunts, etcetera.

I wrapped myself up well to keep me from the cold. My weight is 58.25 kgs today, but I burnt up more energy today with the visit. I’ve no complaints of any nature.

I’ve noticed the orderlies are substituting slices of bread for bits of cake, etcetera — stealing the sweet things (which are rare anyway) for themselves. I don’t know whether it’s a case of ‘How low can you get?’ or ‘Well, could you blame them?’ But they take their choice and fill of the food always, so it’s the former.

They left my supper in tonight when the priest (Fr Murphy) was in. There were two bites out of the small doughy bun. I ask you!

I got the Sunday World newspaper; papers have been scarce for the past few days.

There is a certain Screw here who has taken it upon himself to harass me to the very end and in a very vindictive childish manner. It does not worry me, the harassment, but his attitude aggravates me occasionally. It is one thing to torture, but quite a different thing to exact enjoyment from it, that’s his type.

There was no mirror search going out to visits today — a pleasant change. Apparently, with the ending of the no-wash protest, the mercenary Screws have lost all their mercenary bonuses, etcetera, notwithstanding that they are also losing overtime and so on. So, not to be outdone, they aren’t going to carry out the mirror search any more, and its accompanying brutality, degradation, humiliation, etcetera.

Why! Because they aren’t being paid for it!

I’m continually wrapped up in blankets, but find it hard to keep my feet warm. It doesn’t help my body temperature, drinking pints of cold water. I’m still able to take the salt and five or six pints of water per day without too much discomfort.

The books that are available to me are trash. I’m going to ask for a dictionary tomorrow. I’d just sit and flick through that and learn, much more preferable to reading rubbish.

The English rag newspapers I barely read, perhaps flick through them and hope that no one opens the door. A copy of last week’s AP/RN was smuggled in and was read out last night (ingenuity of POWs again). I enjoyed listening to its contents (faultless – get off them ! – good lad Danny (Morrison)). I truly hope that the people read, take in and understand at least some of the truths that are to be regularly found in it. I see Paddy Devlin is at his usual tricks, and won’t come out and support the prisoners…

Well, that’s it for tonight. I must go. Oíche Mhaith.
