From Stein to Deila in the League Cup

667

Jock Stein won his first five League Cups as Celtic manager (no pressure, Ronny) but in the 43 years since we’ve won the trophy only eight times, including yesterday.

There has been a bit of chat that the Treble is a bit easier since Rangers were liquidated, but, if you know your history, you’ll know that’s not really borne out by the facts.

We’ve won three of the last 10 League Cups and lost to Rangers once but the six other defeats in that period have come at the hands of the likes of Morton, St Mirren and Kilmarnock.  What’s more, Falkirk, Hearts (twice) and Morton all knocked us out at Celtic Park.  We haven’t actually lost an away game in the League Cup for over a decade.  25 of our 35 defeats since Stein’s five-in-a-row have come to teams other than Rangers.

Here is a list of our eventual outcomes in the League Cup, winners or those who eliminated us:

2014-15 Winners
Morton
St Mirren
Kilmarnock
Rangers

2008-09 Winners

At the 40th anniversary of Lisbon I wrote about the 1965-66 until 1969-70 period.  Jock Stein won 12 of the 15 domestic trophies available, five Leagues, five League Cups and two Scottish Cups.  We also won and lost a European Cup Final, while beating champions from Italy, Portugal France and England.

That we went on to win nine-in-a-row disguised the fact that the real glory era ended in 1970.  The last four title winning seasons were not characterised by beating anyone substantial in Europe (notwithstanding the fact that we reached two European Cup semis) and a series of capitulations in League Cup Finals. The downwards trajectory from beating Leeds at Hampden and finishing fifth in the league in 1978 is evident.

Two inferences can be drawn:

Winning trebles is incredibly difficult.  One slip, one bad tackle leading to a red card, and you are up against it.

Teams who aspire to genuine historical greatness never switch off.

We have a ‘never switch off’ manager. No more Mortons, Falkirks or Raith Rovers’.

In my opinion Celtic 69-72 were still a top five or six European club. We proved ourselves against arguably the best team ever in England, Leeds United. Ajax were wrongly given all the credit for ‘total football’. That was invented in Lisbon. Great side as the Dutch were, only Cruyff put them ahead of Celtic at that time. Bayern had six West Germany players in their side and again, not that much better. Stein wouldn’t have made the mistakes of Milan as we’d have been underdogs anyway in both the 72 and 74 finals. Those finals would have been close.

It has to be remembered that half the Lisbon team were still playing and young enough around then, with Dalglish, Mcgrain, Hay and Connelly added. These four would’ve got into the Ajax and Bayern sides.

Lisbon was the pinnacle, the greatest display ever from a Scottish team, perhaps British. However, we should never forget some fantastic performances and results throughout the following seven seasons, notably the Leeds semi-final which were the greatest games I ever attended.

At a domestic level that is stunning.

I will be ecstatic if we win the Treble, the Europa League was of no interest to me as we hadn’t a hope of winning it.

Just walked into the living room when I heard Gordon’s response, there is no way in the world that Peter Smith guy would try to blindside Gordon, not one of the press up here could handle the wee man, far too intelligent and not one bit scared of what they would write about him, the English press were wary about Gordon and some of them are actually good journalists

  14. Clashcitybhoy on

    Timomouse,

That is a good piece of work.

My only challenge would be you need a decent budget for production values if you want to extend the reach.

Whether you like the EPL or not , ( I dont) , the production values are very high, and this gives them a platform to make more money from merchandising etc.

The other option I think the SPFL should consider is giving the UK BEEB the broadcasting rights for zero.

This would of course have some stipulations

    – 6/8 games broadcast nationally on BBC 1 prime time per season, with the full high production values

    – At least one live game every week on one of the second channels BBC2 /3 maybe even digital only

    – 5 mins highlights from Scotland included in MOTD, plus a highlights programme similar to the Championship programme on Saturdays

How does SPFL recover the deficit, and make money – simple, they use the media exposure to sell trackside ads, shirt sponsorship etc.

Get in some top media guys to help lever the value of the broadcasting rights.

I suspect there may be those who would be cynical about my suggestion, but bottom line is look at the way the BEEB creates brands.

Top Gear is a prime example, whilst I detest Clarkson, his company have done a very very good job at polishing the proverbial turd, and turning around a brand on its knees.

The EC was straight knockout draw in those days so you played who they put in front of you. We knocked out Ujpest Dosza,.

*our first game in Hungary they had just returned from their Winter break, we won 2-1. After the 2nd game which we tied 1-1 thanks to an equalizer from wee Skip tae Ma Lou, I said to my mate that I widnae like tae get them in the earlier rounds.

True to form we did in the 2nd round the following season winning 2-1 at CP after being down 0-1 in the 1st leg and getting gubbed 0-3 in the 2nd, that was the score at half time as well.

We did well to bounce back year following year to reach the semis but that was the last hurrah in Europe as far as Stein’s Stunners were concerned.

  19. the long wait is over on

I see there’s some debate still about Broony’s tackle on the United player for their penalty claim so here’s my tuppence worth.

Never a penalty. The United player puts his arm across brown which impedes brown from making the shoulder to shoulder challenge he is trying to make.

That also imbalances the united player who goes over laughably easily. Neither one of Craig Thomson little girls would have gone over with such slight contact.

Btw it has to be said that Bobby Madden , despite much trepidation on my part over his perceived loyalties , had pretty much a flawless game and deserves credit. There were plenty of opportunities for honest mistakes on his part but I don’t think there was one decision he got wrong.

  24. Celticrollercoaster supporting Shay, our bhoy wonder along the way on

***Last Man Standing 4- a message from Shay’s parents***

    Hi Everyone,

As we are approaching our second year of ABR we thought we would give you a wee update on Shay bhoy!

Thank you everyone at CQN for all your help with our fundraising. As you all know ABR Therapy Treatment isn’t available on the NHS so are doing different fundraising events ourselves. With your help & all our friends & families help we have managed to raise about £6650 which is amazing in such a short period of time

This money has covered Shay’s first session of ABR in November last year, We are now just about to attend his second ABR session next week ( 11th &12th of March) which we are all looking forward to. The monies raised to date will cover the final session of the first years treatment in June and also the first session of the second years treatment. Although it is difficult to tell at this stage, we think we will need at least 3 years treatment to give Shay a chance in life.

From just starting ABR Therapy Shay has become a lot stronger in himself. He managed his first taster of soup with us at Christmas which was fantastic for us to see. Also his head control is much better ( still a long way to go) but he is getting there. His physiotherapist at hydrotherapy appointment last Tuesday noticed he has a bit more of a neck showing now and hia chest wasn’t as caved in as it was. ( which is also amazing for him & us). Shay has started to roll over on to his side then a bit further & then gets stuck, this is all good positive progress for us as a family.

Finally Shay is continuing to sleep right through the night and tolerating hia feeds without vomiting, it really is the simple things we appreciate so much as a family. Shay is much better in himself, we have only had one hospital visit this year and managed to stay away all winter which is great, considering last year we were in every other week with him which at times was very stressful and worrying!

You can read about Shay here:

    https://www.facebook.com/pages/Help-Shay-Along-The-Way/814451225255695?fref=tsi

Thanks again to each and every one of you for getting us this far, We look forward to continuing ABR Therapy Treatment with shay & hopefully continue to see positive results.

He is our little superstar, Shay Bhoy will always have a smile on his face no matter what life throws at him.
