From Stein to Deila in the League Cup

667

Jock Stein won his first five League Cups as Celtic manager (no pressure, Ronny) but in the 43 years since we’ve won the trophy only eight times, including yesterday.

There has been a bit of chat that the Treble is a bit easier since Rangers were liquidated, but, if you know your history, you’ll know that’s not really borne out by the facts.

We’ve won three of the last 10 League Cups and lost to Rangers once but the six other defeats in that period have come at the hands of the likes of Morton, St Mirren and Kilmarnock.  What’s more, Falkirk, Hearts (twice) and Morton all knocked us out at Celtic Park.  We haven’t actually lost an away game in the League Cup for over a decade.  25 of our 35 defeats since Stein’s five-in-a-row have come to teams other than Rangers.

Here is a list of our eventual outcomes in the League Cup, winners or those who eliminated us:

At the 40th anniversary of Lisbon I wrote about the 1965-66 until 1969-70 period.  Jock Stein won 12 of the 15 domestic trophies available, five Leagues, five League Cups and two Scottish Cups.  We also won and lost a European Cup Final, while beating champions from Italy, Portugal France and England.

That we went on to win nine-in-a-row disguised the fact that the real glory era ended in 1970.  The last four title winning seasons were not characterised by beating anyone substantial in Europe (notwithstanding the fact that we reached two European Cup semis) and a series of capitulations in League Cup Finals. The downwards trajectory from beating Leeds at Hampden and finishing fifth in the league in 1978 is evident.

Two inferences can be drawn:

Winning trebles is incredibly difficult.  One slip, one bad tackle leading to a red card, and you are up against it.

Teams who aspire to genuine historical greatness never switch off.

We have a ‘never switch off’ manager. No more Mortons, Falkirks or Raith Rovers’.

    re crc’s comment:-

    “Its called dunting the player oot the way as they are about to shoot(rough translation)

    A favourite of mine at CQN 5s :-)”

    Don’t believe him! he dunts people out of the way whether they are about to shoot or no.

    It’s no safe to walk the corridors with him outside the sports hall.

  3. Paul67,

    I can’t hear enough of Ronny Deila when he speaks, he was massive in Belief after the Murrayfield nonsense by the players.

    Hopefully young Liam can start cementing a place in this team, as he is quality, like a few already in the team.

    With the way the World has went, Celtic are likely to win the Europa League but be blocked from winning the Champions League. I have no doubts Ronny won’t be talking as defeatist as me, howevaaah, and there is the real difference, I aint no Footbal Manager. ;))

    Oh Ronny Ronny!!!!!

  4. If the Dundee utd foul was a penalty we can claim back aboot a thousand of our own on PPI.

  5. What does Ronny have to do to win manager of the month Winning every game is obviously not enough.

    Dundee United gave us problems yesterday.

    Dow is an undoubted danger and we have to nail him on Wednesday.

    Good wee player.

    Have just done a quick virtual tour of the stadium seating plan and it looks like being a pretty low crowd.

    I really hope we see a last minute rush and that Ronny and the Bhoys get the support they deserve.

    Hail Hail

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Depending on traffic out of work I could make the game, unlikely to even bother trying now as it seems to me that the Club is penny pinching. Open up the central upper tickets and I’d guess another 5000 would turn up. People are looking at the tickets available and saying nah, not sitting by myself in a corner.
    Micromanagement gone bad. Whodathunkit.
    Bada,
    So I believe.
    Only qualifies him as a decent ref in doing so imo. Many don’t take advice.
    Mentioned yesterday, that I had a cracking view of the referee and his assistant.
    Madden was giving the decision and moved towards the penalty spot, he was talking to the assistant. Whatever the linesman said stopped the award. My thoughts were that the assistant wasn’t 100% and Madden doubted himself.
    It was a penalty all day long – but wouldn’t have given it if I was the MIB.
    Overseasbhoy,
    I’m not arguing. I think he Coulda been given more bit in all honesty I can see why he hadn’t.
    We have only won every game in two months and he was given motm for one of those.
    The other, Ross County won as many games as us and that is probably seen as a bigger achievement
    Micromanagement gone bad……
    not really sure what that means, so on that note, good night and take care
    No St Paddys swally for me tomorrow I am in the dry-out zone, last year St Paddys ended up in the Brazen Head 2pm-6pm couple of old workmates heading there tomorrow, everybody else have a good one
  20. Bhoylo83: how long have you been asleep for? Are you over on Saturday?
    Petec: I understand you have ticket for me for Saturday. Much appreciated – I’ll be in touch in next couple of days.
    Robinbhoy: hope you enjoyed Phoenix. I lived there for nine months thirty years ago. The ghuy who runs the Celtic bar there sold me my first ever car. We exchanged Csc club polo shirts when I visited a few years ago. Seamus still comes over to Celtic matches whenever he can.
    Glasgowcelticway: you mentioned a Celtic v Shamrock Rovers match in Dublin in 1986. Did Tony Cascarino play in that match? If so, that was my first ever Celtic match. The match v SR was at the RDS
    Petec,
    I had very little sleep these last few days.Was exhausted yesterday.
    Not enough though to keep me out of the pub.
    Had a magical day.
    God bless ye and when I come home we will get that long awaited pint.
  23. Almore,
    Looking forward to, hopefully, beating Dundee Utd for a 4th time in a row.
    Wednesday is the Biggest game of the Season, United will have very weary limbs but will fight like their lives depend on it. Celtic will score 3 or 4 in the 2nd half, going by my bets lately that equates to Celtic scoring 3 or 4 in the 1st half. I’m not complaining!!!!
  24. bhoys and ghirls before I head off
    if you are able to go on Wednesday then go. big effort needed on and off the park.
    ps CRC couldn’t get off the island so missed going to the game yesterday. made up by my nine year old niece phoning from Hundump totally excited. She definitely gets being a Tim!
    :-)
  25. Question for Jackie who has chose to dissect the referee’s display, do you forget the game in December when McLean was ref. goal disallowed Scep / penalty shout as weak / strong as Dow’s, Johansen flagged off hitting post when clearly onside, cifti challenge early on and probably more but we did not win so nothing to see there.
    Also I read Patullo in the Scotsman – biased and hurting – this is a guy who has a go at SB but tells us all that Duncan Ferguson is a misunderstood individual.
    If that is how the media are after the first, they are getting ready to have a go if we fail BUT WE WONT.
  26. Good evening my fellow Tim’s.. quick one for someone.. where are the official pics that were taken on Friday night??
