Gang of 10 Arab Spring rebuked by Duff & Phelps

1001

Comments from Duff and Phelps yesterday that they were not in favour of changing the SPL voting system were intriguing.  Kilmarnock chairman, Michael Johnston, was pretty blatant about his agenda when speaking to the BBC on Saturday, suggesting the actions of the Gang of 10 was a “pro-democracy movement” similar to the Arab Spring, saying:

“It might make it easier for the [Rangers] administrators to get whatever they are going to try to achieve whether it is a CVA or new company to be informed and re-joining the SPL and SFA.

“The support of the 10 clubs might be needed at some point.”

Too right the support of the other 10 clubs might be needed at some point if a new company is to join (not re-join, for goodness sake!) the SPL and SFA.

Back in October last year we predicted Rangers would be liquidated, a Newco would be formed and would be voted straight into the SPL, with only Celtic arguing the need to maintain sporting integrity.  Everything we have heard since has reinforced this view.

The debate among the Gang of 10 has matured so far they see no issue in openly offering to support a Newco’s entry into the league in return for money (which we predicted earlier this month), mostly generated from Celtic fans, as it happens.

We await Johnston responding by sticking to his high-minded principles and telling any Newco they will not enjoy Kilmarnock’s support.

Duff and Phelps still have an enormous amount to achieve before they will even be in a position to apply for entry to the SPL on behalf of a Newco but if they do, they will surely offer the Gang of 10 a take-it-or-leave-it proposition. The Gang of 10 will take it. This debate is not about democracy, it’s about directors at clubs like Kilmarnock, who I believe now have debts of over £10m, finding a way to deal with their years of unchecked overspend.

The debate around St Mirren director, Ken McGeoch, would surely outrage sensibilities in any country in the world so I’m pleased his fellow directors have called for his resignation.  In November last year McGeoch invited Rangers company secretary Gary Withey to a meeting at the St Mirren boardroom where he revealed player contract details.

St Mirren are up for sale and could be purchased for what previously amounted loose change at Ibrox; McGeoch met Withey to discuss him purchasing the club from his fellow directors and shareholders.

For a Rangers director, influence like that should be impossible to acquire.

  2. THE Scottish Football Association’s compliance officer, Vincent Lunny, has written to Neil Lennon for the third time in just over a week, asking for an explanation of comments made in the media by the Celtic manager about referees ahead of their Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with St Johnstone at Parkhead this coming Sunday.

Ahead of the visit of the Saints, which will be refereed by George Salmond, Lennon was quoted in an evening newspaper on Tuesday as saying: “It will be nice just to be able to go out and think only about winning a game of football – and maybe have a decent refereeing performance into the bargain.”

The Parkhead manager has allegedly breached rule 69, which prevents managers commenting on referees before games, a rule which was implemented at the start of the season. The Northern Irishman has until tomorrow to respond.

The former Celtic skipper was served with a notice of complaint by Lunny on Monday after being sent off by referee Calum Murray at half-time in the 3-2 SPL defeat by Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday, a decision which Lennon described as “a joke”.

Lunny had already written to Lennon asking him to explain his comments following last week’s 1-0 Scottish Communities League Cup final defeat against Kilmarnock at Hampden when he referred to referee Willie Collum’s decision not to award Celtic a late penalty as “shocking” and “criminal”.

Meanwhile, Lennon has also threatened to stop using his Twitter account.

Earlier in the day the Celtic manager appeared to be in a chirpy mood, tweeting: “Ive best job in the world” (sic) after saying, “enjoy your morning. . . am going to watch these great young players train. . . its such a buzz.” (sic).

However, after some prolific tweeting during the afternoon, his attitude appeared to change and he tweeted: “Guys enough with the hate and bitterness on both sides. . this twitter is supposed to be fun. i will stop unless you stop.”

  3. This is hilarious.” A debt of honour”

Rangers supporters have come to aid of the financially-crippled club by settling a debt owed to Dunfermline, but will not do the same for Dundee United.

The Rangers Fans Fighting Fund (RFFF) has raised £250,000 and pledged to pay the Gers’ outstanding debt of £22,000 to the Pars.

The Ibrox club failed to reimburse the Pars with around £85,000 following the Scottish Premier League game between the two clubs at East End Park on 11th February, prior to them entering administration. The remaining £63,000 has already been paid.

Rangers will go in front of the Scottish Football Association’s judiciary panel at Hampden on Thursday on several charges, one of which is the failure to pay Dundee United monies, thought to be around £70,000, owed for the Scottish Cup tie between the sides at Ibrox in February.

However, the RFFF claim only the Fifers deserve what they are calling ‘a debt of honour to a club of honour’.

    Discussion

The Pars had claimed the loss of this expected revenue had caused them financial difficulties, and Rangers legend Sandy Jardine will go to Dunfermline on Friday on behalf of the Fund and hand over the cheque to Pars chairman John Yorkston.

Andrew McCormick, chairman of the RFFF issued a statement which read: “After some discussion it was agreed that we should use some of the money collected by our fans to pay off this outstanding debt.

“This is a debt of honour to a club of honour.

“Consideration was also given to using some more of the funds to pay off money owed to Dundee United.

“But that was rejected as there were strong views that, in recent times, Dundee United had treated Rangers and their fans with disdain.

“Rangers fans were angry when Dundee United levied an extra charge on Rangers ticket holders if they wished to attend an abandoned game at Tannadice.

    Impact

“Like everyone else connected to the club, we are aware of the Rangers standing and their responsibilities to the rest of the game in Scotland.

“We believe that spending some of our funds this way is only fair to Dunfermline who are suffering because of a situation that was not of their making.

“It also demonstrates to the Scottish football authorities that Rangers fans not only have an allegiance to the club , but are aware of the impact the club’s situation is having elsewhere in the game.

“The Fans Fighting Fund is doing this on behalf of Rangers Football Club as we believe this the proper course of action.

  4. CRAIG Whyte has failed to respond to an SFA invitation to attend today’s Judicial Panel hearing at Hampden which will see Rangers and their discredited owner face a total of nine disciplinary charges.

The SFA’s Compliance Officer, Vincent Lunny, issued notices of complaint against both Rangers and Whyte two weeks ago over a wide range of alleged rule breaches relating to the controversial venture capitalist’s takeover of the Ibrox club last May and its subsequent slide into administration.

Rangers have indicated they will be represented at today’s principal hearing by administrators Duff & Phelps and their lawyers. But the SFA have had no response from Whyte, who has been conspicuous only by his absence from Glasgow since taking Rangers into administration on 14 February. Whyte is entitled to make a written submission to the hearing and be represented by a third party.

  6. Morning All

Just 2 quick points before the deluge begins.

Does anyone else think the SFA, are playing a blinder for the letter bombers defence team. I mean, how much bad press can one man, NL, get, just when an Edinburgh Jury are about to consider verdicts on men who have planned to murder him( if found guilty).

Also, Im really pleased for Yorkston and his unhonour ablebunch, I hope the the cheque bounces. C’mon hibs put this horrible man and his team where they belong. This man revolts me.

    done.

  7. googybhoy –

    good morning to you too.

Was just on t’official site there and there are precisely 250 seats left for this Sunday’s game.

    Jobo.

  8. Asking our manager to explain his comment about hoping for a decent referee practically amounts to an admission from the SFA that Murray’s performance on Sunday was completely rank. Lenny should repeat this comment every week – it’s a perfectly natural and reasonable desire that anyone interested in sport would want. It is the SFA who have inferred criticism but none has actually been clearly stated.

  9. “This is a debt of honour to a club of honour.

Surely other creditors must have some legal recourse over this.

Rangers Fighting Fund pays off one creditor and not another.

I thought the Rangers Fans Fighting Fund was to finance away trips to places Luke Manchester.

Good morning fellow Celts from the 06:31 to Waterloo

Some great posts over the last week or so (not the Neg stuff…) some have complained about how the quality on here jas declined over the years and is not as good as the early days of the blog. This is now my 5th season here and I feel the depth and breadth of contributions has improved with each passing year. We are all very lucky to have Paul67 and his team of experts who keep this all TICking over.

Low: FIVE charges against RFC(IA) for bringing the game into disrepute.

Ignore: TWO charges against RFC(AI) for not paying Dundee Unt their due money for Scottish Cup tie (£100,000).

    Busy day, eh, Campbell?

  13. Manchester City executive Patrick Vieira believes title rivals Manchester United and other big clubs benefit from key refereeing decisions at home.

His comments come two days after Fulham were denied a late penalty in the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

“When United play at home they get some advantage that other teams don’t get,” Vieira told BBC Sport.

Scottish Football Association’s Stewart Regan explains the SFA’s role Craig Whyte’s acquisition of Rangers and says the body will look to stamp out behaviour that is not “acting with integrity”.

Quite simply, it could be one of the biggest sporting scandals the UK has ever seen. On the one hand you have the Big Tax Case where the revenue says Rangers owe almost £50m in unpaid taxes.

Alongside that, there’s the issue of player registration. Because of the club’s tax arrangements, it is possible they fielded player after player without telling either the Scottish FA or Premier League about those players’ full salary details.

If they didn’t – and this is still the subject of investigation – every match they played in could be forfeit to the other side 3-0, and a whole lot of silverware will leave Rangers to be re-engraved and presented to another club.

Whatever Englishman Stewart Regan might have anticipated when he moved from Yorkshire County Cricket Club to the Scottish Football Association, I would bet the farm that he encountered a few surprises and one or two shocks in the culture of top football in Scotland – and in Glasgow particularly.

Fair play, he invited our cameras in to his Hampden Park HQ recently as part of our investigation into the goings-on at Rangers Football Club, and nothing was off limits.

Some of this material has been shown both on Channel 4 News and STV News, but I thought these other extracts would be of interest to people, covering as they do questions of leadership for the SFA and whether or not the SFA owes Scottish football fans an apology.

Make what you will of Mr Regan’s viewpoint, but you cannot deny he has shown more openness and transparency than has been the case in Rangers’ recent history.

  18. RFF choosing to pay Dunfermline but not Dundee Utd is a bit like the Yorkshire ripper agonising over which of his victim’s families to give his empty ginger bottles to by means of compensation. Utterly shameless!

  19. sixtaeseven: No NewCo in SPL and it's Non-Negotiable! on

    The RFC(IA) circus trundles on.

Does anyone know how the Rangers Fans Fighting Fund (RFFF) – Duff and Duffer tandem works?

RFFF appear to be paying minor creditors that they think worthy and if they esteem that the debt is “a debt of honour”.

Duff and Duffer, unless somebody can correct me, are doing their best to avoid paying any fecker (minor or major) whether the debt is honorable or not.

The Big Top must stay open right enough!!!

  20. Reading the stupid huns about paying a club with honour but telling Dundee Utd to F’ Off.

They do realise they will be banned from the Scottish Cup.

    Stupid, Stupid huns…

  21. Good morning CQNers,

Is the payment to Dunfermline legal given that Rangers are in administration? also the SFA/SPL/Fifa/Uefa must have some rules and regulations regarding payment from 3rd parties.

  22. Larsson and McStay on

After years of singing the praises of all things royal , and claiming to be the “quintessentially British club” , you would think the Rangers (in admin) Fans Fighting Fund would surely recognise ANY debt to Her Majesty as being the most honourable of debts ……think their £20 odd grand would be best used towards chipping away at this years £9m of honourable debt for non-payment of PAYE.

  23. Stewart Regan complains to Channel 4 about being made a scapegoat over the Rangers huge financial problem

Neil Lennon can tell Stewart Regan all about being made a scapegoat in the West of Scotland particularly by the referees in the SFA

Regan could not even admit that using the word potentially in relation to the biggest sport story in Scotland is acceptable.
