Gang of 10 SPL clubs set to deliver hammer blow to Rangers

747

It has been another busy news day but for now we’ll concentrate on the two most important matters.

10 SPL clubs, excluding Celtic and Rangers, have arranged to meet next week.  This is the most significant news since Craig Whyte bought Rangers in May last year.  One SPL chairman told the BBC:

“With the Old Firm having talked in the past about leaving Scottish football, we have had to think about a future without them.

“Part of that situation could be about to come true, so we have had time to think about how we would get on without them.”

The smaller 10 SPL clubs have a once-only opportunity to redraw the power and financial map in Scottish football.  They want more of your money and this is their chance to get it.  They also want to be able to vote crazy ideas into the league that benefit teams without many fans or good players.

This is perfectly understandable and expected.  The distribution of TV income currently favours successful clubs, who are invariably featured most often.  Smaller clubs want to change this into a more equitable distribution model.  You and I will still buy the overwhelming majority of subscriptions, but our club will receive less cash from the TV deal.

“Part of that situation” refers to an SPL without Rangers.  This meeting is likely to end Newco Rangers hopes of getting straight back into the SPL in their tracks.  Without knowing the numbers in favour of a change, this looks like the killer blow, delivered before any proposition from Craig Whyte reaches the agenda.

We have discussed the need for Whyte to present a fait-accompli in order to get his wish.  Having been unable to do that, others had the opportunity to organise and make alternative plans.

The other important occurrence today was the attendance at the Rolls Building courts in London today by HMRC lawyers, keen to secure any monies seized from Collyer Bristows’ client account last week.  HMRC have made it perfectly clear they are all over Duff and Phelps and will seek court intervention to secure their rights.

This is significant.

You can make what you like about a more even distribution of SPL TV money, or the possibility of being held to ransom in future by bad teams who want to vote themselves out of relegation, but the only thing we know for sure is that this has been a profoundly bad day for Craig Whyte and anyone else hoping to phoenix a Newco Rangers.

In light of today‘s developments,  Mr Whyte and the administrators have some thinking to do before announcing any plans tomorrow.

if they want to commit footballing suicide a good way to go about it as a club chairman is to accept open handed a newco that will thump you at every opportunity.

it sends out all the wrong messages

football fans need to believe there clubs want to win, compete be the best they can be, by accepting newco into the SPL they are going against every principle i mentioned

they would be as well as closing their clubs down right now, cause that is in effect what they would be voting for.

  2. auldheid..

how much do you think we would pay for the membership?

some of us who have or do not have a season ticket would like to know..

I will come out and admit that I do not have a season ticket but I have attended more matches this year since I gave it up..(kano and thi tims have been paid)

if I can’t afford a season ticket can I be part of Celtic via the membership scheme?

I didn’t know of the shared birthday, though BTs post confused me as well as Wonky, who took some infair stick.

  5. Any New-Co has a lot of hoops to jump through before there is even a prospect of getting into a vote to remain in SPL.

I don’t disagree but I believe the ten chairmen will be too shortsighted to see the long term benefits if they held their nerve.

not sure if I’d be as hostile to the old firm tag if we were the only team in it :o)

i would not expect other clubs to do the same. however, i would have it drafted into any rules that any club that plays to crowds of 20,000 plus, fall into the same category, its more about bigger clubs taking an active role in supporting the whole league that a ranger and celtic thing, simply to maintained a healthy league, i know its unlikely but if a club like hibs, aberdeen or hearts were more competitive there is every possibility that fans would return and start to attend grounds on the basis that they might actually see their teams having a bit of sustained success.

tow suggestions I really liked tonight.

make the distribution of the pot linked to points and any deal has a minimum requirement about te playing surfaces.

Clubs should be deducted points for games postponed due to pitch and bad playing conditons, though the second part of that will need a bit of refining.

  16. Shieldmuir Celtic on

I apologise if these two questions about the meeting of ten have already been answered –

    – Were Celtic excluded ?

    – If so was the meeting constitutional?

  17. thomthethim, Happy birthday.

I would love it if Celtic got out of the SPL and away from the SFA. Swansea are doing alright. We could do so much better. Remaining in Scotland in a discredited competition with clubs and an association who it would appear are happy to condone corruption and tax evasion should not be an option.

Dont forget the Scottish fans who attack our manager, send bombs and bullets to him nor the society and press who think he brought it all upon himself. Then there is the football association who lie to us, support refs who are biased against us, are institutionally anti celtic and one who think it is OK to appoint Ogilvie, a man who oversaw a sectarian policy at Rangers. Not to mention their lack of an investigation into “two contract” allegations.

    Etc, etc. etc.

Aye, we should stay in Scotland. England would be rubbish.

We should take this once in a lifetime opportunity to get out of this league. We are not, and never were wanted.

    Rant off chest.

One of the ideas I sent Celtic vis-a-vis the membership scheme is that every supporter who joins is given a share per annum on receipt of their dues. That way every Celtic Supporter in the world would own their own wee part of Celtic. (As though they don’t already)

They also asked if I though discounts would be a good idea… I replied “No”.

So long as we have scenario planned, we can use this situation to our advantage.

The other clubs know they need Rankers and want to wring out every concession they can.

Equally, if they need them , they need us and so long as we are prepared for an arduous negotiation , which will inevitably cast us as the bad guys, then we can win out of this situation.

One other thing , as I posted earlier, and as you will know, the competition authorities take a very dim view of collusion.

It can lead to big fines and expensive legal battles.

The last thing we want is to be brought to the attention of the competition authorities, but I would suggest that our pockets are deeper than All of their’s , any nervousness we may have would be amplified tenfold elsewhere if they are seen to be publicly colluding against a competitor.

  22. Sorry if posted already.

Apparently the huns had a protest at Ibrox this evening at 7:30. Around ten people turned up. Heres what was posted on Ranger’ Media: They couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery! :D

*****ADMIN – PLEASE DO NOT CHOP – THIS NEEDS A THREAD OF IT’S OWN. WE NEED MORE BODIES THAN SHOWED UP TONIGHT*****Bring banners, flags, scarfs etc We need to show everyone that we are not going to disappear without a fight. We need to show everyone we are united as one and are willing to do anything for our club. vA few of us met up at Ibrox tonight and got a bit of media interest. Mark Dingwall from FF and the Rangers Supporters Trust made a welcome appearence and that was appreciated greatly.I’ve got in contact with the Union Bears and they are spreading the word and hopefully can add a few banners etc. Please turn up at Ibrox tomorrow at 7:30 if you can.We Are The People – let’s show everyone why.No Surrender.

  23. Bringing the game into disrepute covers a multitude of sins and they are guilty of most.

Since we don’t know the specific charge we can only speculate that justice shall not prevail.

    Not guilty

    Not proven

Och, it wisnae so bad, a smack on the wrist should do.

    Ain’t it great with friends?

For me they are guilty on one point which cannot be explained away.

Their continued existence is an affront to Scottish football and Scottish society, including Salmonds “fabric”.

Bigotry may be endemic in Scotland, but no-one can convince me that they are not the focal point. They promote it, they make it seem okey and then influence other communities outwith the West of Scotland with the message – if you have nothing to support locally, we can unite in hatred of something which RFCIA don’t like.

Guilty on all counts (whatever they may be).

Not sure how much we can influence matters – see it more as an opportunity for the rest to get their houses in order-

Where there’s a will there’s a way – just worried about the will factor.

    Cheers

    Alex

  24. Regarding the “Ten” and their hopes for the future.

Splitting the gate – hit us hard.

Would it be worth agreeing to this if we could get individual TV deals?

Currently we have no realistic product to sell even if we were allowed to negotiate our own TV deal.

The SPL allow individual TV deals.

We can’t offer them to our local support as this will hit our attendances.

We give up on (some aspects) of splitting the gate but get the opportunity to sell all the games we are involved with – home and away.

We can sell 2 packages –

Home and away – very expensive.

    Away – Sky type money.

It will suit the “Ten” as they can organise / price their own deals to their own fans. Currently they lose money from their own fans when the play us / TFOD at home.

The games are on the TV and so their own support falls compared to their other home games.

Need to work on the numbers for this, I can think of two alternative scenarios –

    1) Split the total gate – not including Hospitality / Free pie seats.

    2) Split the individual sale gate – exceptions as above plus season tickets.

Just how much would an individual TV deal be worth to us?
