Gang of 10 SPL clubs set to deliver hammer blow to Rangers

747

It has been another busy news day but for now we’ll concentrate on the two most important matters.

10 SPL clubs, excluding Celtic and Rangers, have arranged to meet next week.  This is the most significant news since Craig Whyte bought Rangers in May last year.  One SPL chairman told the BBC:

“With the Old Firm having talked in the past about leaving Scottish football, we have had to think about a future without them.

“Part of that situation could be about to come true, so we have had time to think about how we would get on without them.”

The smaller 10 SPL clubs have a once-only opportunity to redraw the power and financial map in Scottish football.  They want more of your money and this is their chance to get it.  They also want to be able to vote crazy ideas into the league that benefit teams without many fans or good players.

This is perfectly understandable and expected.  The distribution of TV income currently favours successful clubs, who are invariably featured most often.  Smaller clubs want to change this into a more equitable distribution model.  You and I will still buy the overwhelming majority of subscriptions, but our club will receive less cash from the TV deal.

“Part of that situation” refers to an SPL without Rangers.  This meeting is likely to end Newco Rangers hopes of getting straight back into the SPL in their tracks.  Without knowing the numbers in favour of a change, this looks like the killer blow, delivered before any proposition from Craig Whyte reaches the agenda.

We have discussed the need for Whyte to present a fait-accompli in order to get his wish.  Having been unable to do that, others had the opportunity to organise and make alternative plans.

The other important occurrence today was the attendance at the Rolls Building courts in London today by HMRC lawyers, keen to secure any monies seized from Collyer Bristows’ client account last week.  HMRC have made it perfectly clear they are all over Duff and Phelps and will seek court intervention to secure their rights.

This is significant.

You can make what you like about a more even distribution of SPL TV money, or the possibility of being held to ransom in future by bad teams who want to vote themselves out of relegation, but the only thing we know for sure is that this has been a profoundly bad day for Craig Whyte and anyone else hoping to phoenix a Newco Rangers.

In light of today‘s developments,  Mr Whyte and the administrators have some thinking to do before announcing any plans tomorrow.

  1. i am a little lost to be honest, will they survive or die, i really don’t know, i don’t know the ins and outs, but i want them to die.

is a meeting to discuss the current situation appropriate, i think it is, is it appropriate to exclude celtic, i think not.

i don’t think clubs can vote for newco to re-enter SPL, as if nothing has happened, any team that does so, will leave themselves exposed to a very unhappy fan base.

future plans: i have already pointed out that i believe we:

    need a larger league

split of t.v. money would be simple in my eyes

league winners receive 10% more than those team that qualify for European football, those team that qualify for European football receive 15% more that those that don’t qualify for European football.

i would give teams visiting celtic park 50% of away gate, bring 1000 receive the value of 500 tickets in return (better atmosphere, increase interest in clubs promoting away games to fans visiting celtic park, hence better revenue and interest for both clubs)

play-offs at both ends of table for last European spot each season and relegation.

    summer football

agree a cap on seating at every ground maybe £20.00 for an adult and £10 for student, children, OAP etc…

every club cuts cost accordingly, and don’t tell me we cant do that it would harm us, we have a squad of about 40 first team players, of which we could move on 20 and still have the same level in terms of quality, o.k i know that there would be less strength in depth, but there would be more opportunities for young players.

all of these measures would potentially make the league more competitive.

by the time any newco is in the SPL the league would be far more competitive and they would have to agreed to the same rules as the rest of the league, with the only real difference a potential increase in t.v money, which will in turn feed into the rest of the league.

25 years of celtic and rangers monopolising the league has driven fans from every other club, if the balance is not redressed there will be no football and if rangers do survive we should be looking to make these changes regardless

The EPL is one of the most over-rated, over-hyped products known to man.

Sadly , they are able to charge over inflated prices for their viewing rights, and until they get found out , I would gladly swap a place in the SPL for one in the EPL

Athletic 5th in the primera liga. How would they fare in the EPL?

    (finish 2nd to Sporting Lisbon?)

  5. complete aside.

at Overlee park on sunday at nephews football and on the next pitch was a game between a blue meanies youth team, and a team in green and white.

terribly dirty match, one side giving it out really badly.

their 5 coaches given the ref verbals during the whole game.

their desire to win at all costs was almost touchable.

they went on at the end of the match and geve the ref a torrid time.

then got involved in a shouting match with the green team coaches.

they won 3-2 by the way.

i wont miss them, at any level.

English folk in work keep saying ‘You want into the EPL’

Aston Villa and Everton fans the both of them, I tell them I have no interest in their wee daft league where thier teams are limp at the start and have no aim. I know Celtic would win it within five seasons but dont want to go to England, Europe is where we belong,

Wish I could agree with your statement that “This meeting is likely to end Newco Rangers hopes of getting straight back into the SPL in their tracks”

I tend to the opposite view. This meeting will guarantee that Newco will get a vote to allow them straight back into the SPL unless , contrary to all expectation , any vote is predicated on morality and integrity and not hard cash. I know…

The ten are in a bit of a quandary in that they are probably afraid to take a leap of faith and not allow a Newco back in. That fear will not , however , be as great as Newco’s fear that they will be excluded.

The ten will never have a better opportunity to squeeze the entity that is and will become new Rangers. The current voting threshold of , as I understand it , 11-1 means , of course , the ten can plan without us as long as they get agreement with Newco.

The ten have already been gifted an enhanced chance of European competition for one year and liquidation would give them another two as I understand it , so that one of the incentives for excluding Newco is already removed.

I think the only conclusion that can be drawn here is that the ten will agree a punitive deal with Newco , in terms of points penalties probably for a three year period and finance for a longer period , in return for admission to the SPL.

Only us presenting them with some kind of nuclear option will stop this. If PL and the board are half the people they ought to be , all of this and our response ought to have been considered and formulated long before now.

I posted long before 14 Feb that the only thing I was sure of in all of this was that the ultimate outcome would be a disappointment to us. I hope that’s not accurate but I fear it will be.

I’ve been advocating a more equitable split of CL money as a means of improving competition but if it is a more equitable split of TV money (that is going to be less in any case) Celtic only need to qualify for 1 CL in 3 to be quids in if they keep the lot.

If it is the price Celtic pay for integrity then it will be worth it.

Having said that I’ve had a wee look at SPL and SFA rules on club licensing and came across this little cracker.

Part 2 – National Club Licensing (SFA)

Section 8 – Legal, Admin and Finance Criteria

    8.1.1 Annual Financial Statements

Regardless of the club’s legal status, the club shall be required to provide a copy of its annual financial statements which have been approved by the club members at a General Meeting.

The statements shall refer to the year ended 2011 Clubs will provide this information as follows SPL clubs – by 31 March 2012 All other clubs – by 30 April 2012

    http://www.scottishfa.co.uk/resources/documents/ClubLicensing/PartTwo-NationalClubLicensing/8%20%20Legal%20Admin%20&%20Finance%20Criteria%20(2).pdf

See the problem here Paul? No agreed accounts and a reason for SFS to refuse an ENTRY level licence. And as regards Newco if the 10 have not killed that anyway, they have no history to submit to the SFA to get through the licensing process which according to this Core Process takes 7 weeks.

    http://www.scottishfa.co.uk/resources/documents/ClubLicensing/PartTwo-NationalClubLicensing/4.%20Core%20Process%20(2)b.pdf

The SFA can make the SPL comply with integrity, kicking and screaming by not granting Rangers or Newco a licence to play in Scotland.

    The Awakening is coming :)

    The Awakening

A time comes in your life when you finally get it. When in the midst of all your fears and insanity you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out – ENOUGH!

Enough fighting and crying or struggling to hold on. And, like a child quieting down after a blind tantrum, your sobs begin to subside, you shudder once or twice, you blink back your tears and through a mantle of wet lashes you begin to look at the world through new eyes.

This is your awakening. You realize that it’s time to stop hoping and waiting for something to change, or for happiness, safety and security to come galloping over the next horizon. You come to terms with the fact that life marches to the beat of its own drum and that in the real world there aren’t always fairy tale endings (or beginnings for that matter). and that any guarantee of “happily ever after” must begin with you, and in the process a sense of serenity is born of acceptance.

stephbhoy @ 21:56 – agree with you that it is entirely inappropriate for the 10 clubs to openly meet without Celtic and whether we like it or not, whoever represents Rankers as well. Why do we pay good money to Neil Doncaster and cohorts to manage the SPL when a group of clubs can just arrange a block vote to do whatever the hell they like?

You make some really good points about improving the game and I really like the idea about splitting the away gate money….just don’t expect the other clubs to reciprocate!
