Great times for Celtic

822

It’s always encouraging to read positive comment on your club, so the positivity from a sports brand consultant at Brand Finance was welcome.  Apparently we are something of a commercial miracle, reaching parts no one else from a small country can come close to.

It’s also delightful hearing about glamour preseason friendlies (not quite announced yet, but coming).  We are a club with more than just history, we have a team the best in the world want to play.  We also have a future.

We have the league championship trophy in the boardroom, Champions League qualifiers to look forward to, and the sun is shining on Glasgow!

These are great times for Celtic.

  1. Regarding Catholic schools.

I am Catholic, went to a Catholic school.

My children are not, long time since I was a practising Catholic.

We decided to send our daughter to a Catholic high school, it’s simply the best school in the area. She has thrived in the community, not once has the fact she is not a Catholic been mentioned to her, never.

My point is simple, they must be protected, Salmond would be without them in an instant if it meant votes for him.

Catholic schools were started for good reasons, those reasons remain.

Our other daughters will follow their sister to the same high school.

I understand what you are saying squire.McCourt is McCourt,a total natural,he has his flaws, but he is a one-off mate.

McGeady is different class though – maybe somebody threw him a football when he was about 2,same as Rory McIlroy the golfer.

    £20million couldn’t buy Aiden McGeady.

I was only asking the question.

In my view all our kids should go to the same school

    regardless of their religion.

  4. Googy. Yea read that before

Yes the beer bar, great place before and after Huns games and yes so cheap

And indeed no huns club there, the joke always was that the Tory club and Huns club were one and the same

I to met mcstay at the club, in a room above the beer bar about 86 or 87

We discussed this when we met in Sydney a few years ago and he remembers the night as his good mate Ronnie was with him

In a normal society, all children should go the same school. We do not live in a normal society.

  6. Gordon64 I am only giving an opinion. My father attended school in the 30 and 40s before there were catholic schools. i don’t know if it made a difference that he lived in Ayrshire but while all children attended the same school, the division was still there. I’ve heard many of his stories about catholic children being beaten up because of their religion and children in his class waiting for him and his brothers outside of church because they were alter boys. His father and many like him marched and fought to get catholic schools. It seems that sadly, either way, the division is there. It’s just now we have more choice

  7. I was just catching up with the Sportsound podcast there. Mark Daly was present, as was Jim Spence. I was encouraged to hear Spence quote SFA article 99.1 “a member or associated person may not take a dispute to a court of law without prior approval.” He goes on to say that he has spoken to “various people in the game” one of whom said that SPL chairmen are “incadescent” re Duff and Phelps approach to court of session, and feel that theSFA are being forced to throw the book at them, or face FIFA telling them to.

I cannot speak for anybody else, but I would like to thank Barcabhoy for the knowledgeable & illuminating posts which he has been good enough to present us with over the years. I am at a loss to understand how he can be criticised for telling us that another big story is in the offing, which he cannot yet disclose to us as it has been given to him in confidence.

That is the very essence of proper behaviour & should be commended.

The very idea that our children

    should attend different schools because

    of their religion is nonsense.

I completely understand your arguments for

    preserving catholic schools however

    i think it is wrong.

    Only my humble opinion.

I thought the bridge was excellent – particularly the last two episodes.

  15. Why has the argument re Catholic schools raised its ugly head again?

    Politicians looking for votes?

Huns looking to vent their hate?

Catholic schools in Scotland punch above their weight. So I assume the objective will be to dumb down attendees at Catholic schools. Notice I didn’t say Catholics.

When I think back to the teachers who taught me in the 50s and 60s, I am in awe of the dedication they had to ensure that we all had the chance to compete on a level playing field and we were equipped to overcome the bigotry and prejudice we would face in the workplace.

  16. TicTocTicToc on

    Hi Gordon,

I am afraid I don’t agree with you. My son goes to catholic school and it is not only one of the best in the area but one of the best in the country. But that is not your argument, I know a couple of teachers that have worked in catholic schools and were seconded to non denominational schools and they have told me that the difference is staggering in terms of atmosphere and culture. I believe that plus the teaching of tolerance is the big difference.

  17. Sixteen roads to Golgotha on

That’s just the way it goes.

Eurovision? Each to there own. Some folk may find that cartoon offensive, maybe even more so than swearing. It’s just goes to show how we humans differ in our opinions.

It doesn’t necessarily offend me,but there ya are now.Everybody is different.

  18. fanadpatriot on

    Gordon64

With all due respect,I think you are missing the point. If we did not have Catholic schools we would be sitting at the back of the bus, again.

  19. Gordon64 happy to agree to disagree sort of. I don’t think they should go to different schools because of their religion. There are many non catholics at my childrens school. All are welcome, they are all there because it is always among the top 2 schools in Scotland. My children are at that school for that reason and also because I am more than confident that they are being taught tolerance of all colours and creeds and therefore I believe they receive a better all round education. This is just my opinion.

    Cheers

  20. I should have also added that the Head Teacher of the other school in the area that competes for the spot of top school in Scotland was a deputy head in my childrens school and his experience until that point had always been at a catholic school. There’s a lot to be said for a catholic education

  22. Good evening.

1st. point: I was ‘growed up’ in ’67. I have to pinch myself to make sure I’m alive as there are so many posts from ‘I was 6’ or ‘I was 8′ to I wasn’t born till 2, 3 4 years after Lisbon. I feel I should be in the Old Testament.

2nd. point: For the Plains bhoys. I taught in St. Davids back when it was a junior secondary. Do you remember it? Or are you in the above posters’ categories? Is it still there. I have not been in the area for at least 20 years. Had some good times but some hell moments too. If you are from Plains, you will know why. They were no softies over there.

3rd. point: The issue is not denominational schools. The right to have denominational schools will not be a problem. The problem will be having them paid for by the government. England, where I live, has loads of denominational schools, not just Catholic, but they are privately funded (some have government support with the new educational changes over the last few years e.g. academies and college stautus). Many denominational schools still have to fund themselves e.g. Catholic schools usually by the dioceses. Interestingly, even in my street, approximately 60% of all the kids who go to the local Catholic schools are not catholic and parents choose them as much for their moral standards and ethics as their educational prowess. I believe it would be the same in Scotland if the government funding were ever withdrawn. As a wee rider, it is a subject I feel quite strongly about as my first parish priest was in the vanguard of the fight for government funding. Yes, I am that old!

4th. point. I thought this was a Celtic Football forum. For a while I thought I had wandered onto Question Time.
