Greek tragedy, angry man narrative concludes

794

The world likes nothing more than an idiot to make us all feel better about ourselves.  The World Cup has duly delivered.  An otherwise intelligent, multi-lingual, footballer, has debased the game, and himself, despite twice before facing the world’s censure.

I feel for Italy, who should have seen an opponent sent off before they conceded the goal which put them out of the tournament, for Giorgio Chiellini, the victim of the assault, and manager Cesare Prendelli, who resigned after leading a large nation to failure in a group which Uruguay and Costa Rica progressed from.  Few in our game are selfless enough to resign from any job, so he deserves credit, but the prevailing narrative on the offender sits uncomfortably.

Instead of asking “Why?” the most obvious question is “Why did anyone think he wouldn’t?”

A man loses control of his emotions, gets angry and reacts in an inexplicable way he has repeatedly done so before, despite calmly delivered assurances he would never do so again.  It’s not exactly a unique human tale.

What if he was a wife beater, would anyone be surprised?  Some men repeatedly lose control, get angry and indulge in an inexplicable act of violence against the person they are most dependent on (women have been known to regularly ‘lose it’ too, of course).

I don’t know what the treatment programme for wife beaters is, but I’m pretty sure it’s completely separate from any punishment.  Does fear of punishment, condemnation, or of hurting yourself or your loved ones, matter the instant before an attack?  I suspect not.

Suarez is not repeatedly beating a helpless victim, so I’m not equating him with those who do, but his case is more difficult to resolve.  You can tell a wife beater not to get drunk (etc.), but Suarez’ trigger is the tension which arises on the football field.  He will feel this tension again and we should expect him to react in the same uncontrollable way.  In fact, opponents are now more likely to provoke him, so, if anything, the rate of incidence is likely to increase.

Like the bully who is not fit to be alone with his loved ones, Suarez is literally not fit to be on a football field.  To protect him, and others, from himself, he should be removed from the game until that rage is under control.  This may also rob him of his mojo, which is a very great pity.

The other narrative of the week is that the game should not only value people who lose control of their emotions but should put them in charge, as it takes anger to get results.  Watch the adherents to this doctrine line up to condemn the logical conclusion of their strategy.

Dreadful news that David Taylor, one of our own, former SFA chief executive and latterly one of the top men at Uefa, died.  Our condolences to his family.

I was delighted when Greece were awarded an injury time penalty when needing a goal against Ivory Coast but the trauma when Georgios picked up the ball!  Things are still raw….  Fortunately Georgios is not prone to letting his emotions get out of check.  The coolest man on the planet acted like he was training at Lennoxtown.  So pleased for him.

Cast your memory back to the “Greek tragedy” goading the player received from ITV commentators during World Cup 2010, based on his limited exposure at Manchester City.  They’ve all learned now.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Celtic Graves raffle, which was drawn by Celtic FC Foundation chief exec, Tony Hamilton.  First name out of the Celtic carrier bag and winner of Scott Brown’s boot was Edward John Gavin Whyte.  Second name out and winner of Virgil Van Dijk’s boot was Erin McCafferty.

Just over £1,000 was raised and half of this will go to the hospice who looked after Wee Oscar.

I`m afraid I have a jaundiced view of the whole concept,as you may well be aware.

And of the motivation of those proposing it.

Celtic played Barcelona in last season’s Champions League group stage[GETTY]

UEFA confirmed that the Scottish champions earned 17,566,000 euros by making the money-spinning group stage.

Neil Lennon’s side earned over £7m from qualifying for Group H, more than £6m from the marketing pool and around £800,000 for their solitary win over Ajax.

The cash haul is down almost a third on the previous season as the Hoops claimed around £22.2m after making it to the last 16, where they lost out to Juventus.

The Champions League money is vital to Celtic as they struggle to compete with the finances on offer at Europe’s major leagues.

That is why new boss Ronny Deila is under immediate pressure to follow in the footsteps of Neil Lennon by taking Celtic through the qualifiers and back into the competition proper, starting with their opener against KR Reykjavik.

  26. Luis Suarez claims bite on Giorgio Chiellini was ‘casual play’ and World Cup ban is English and Italian conspiracy

By Ben Rumsby, Rio de Janeiro

    6:03PM BST 25 Jun 2014

Uruguay striker’s lawyer blames “pressure from England and Italy” as he outlines defence argument

An unrepentant Luis Suárez was on Wednesday night planning how to escape a record World Cup ban after his lawyer branded his biting of Giorgio Chiellini “casual play” that led to the Uruguay striker suffering a worse injury than his opponent.

Alejandro Balbi, a Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) board member, also claimed his client was the victim of an English, Italian and Brazilian conspiracy to expel the striker from the tournament for helping knock the former two countries out while AUF president Wilmar Valdez said there was not enough proof to sanction the player.

Suárez on Wednesday night faced a heavy sanction if found guilty by Fifa of the third biting offence of his career, its disciplinary committee confirming he would learn his fate by the end of Thursday following the examination of footage from Tuesday’s Group D match between Uruguay and Italy in Natal.

Rather than apologise for an episode that has marred the most spectacular of World Cups, Suárez attempted on Wednesday to wriggle his way out of a ban, with Balbi and AUF president Wilmar Valdez travelling to Rio de Janeiro to plead his case.

“We don’t have any doubts that this has happened because it’s Suárez and secondly because Italy was eliminated,” Balbi told Uruguayan radio Sport 890, compounding the conspiracy theories being pedalled by his country’s media. “There’s a lot of pressure from England and Italy. We’re polishing off a defence argument.”

That argument will include accusing Chiellini of injuring Suárez’s eye in fending off the striker as he apparently sank his teeth into the Italian’s shoulder. Valdez claimed Fifa might struggle to construct a case. “We understand that there is not sufficient evidence to truly sanction Luis,” he said.

Balbi, who also insinuated that World Cup hosts Brazil may be part of any conspiracy against their old foes, said of the disciplinary proceedings: “There is a possibility that they ban him, because there are precedents. But we’re convinced that it was an absolutely casual play, because if Chiellini can show a scratch on one shoulder, Suárez can show a bruised and almost shut eye.

“If every player starts showing the injuries he suffers and they open inquiries for them, everything will be way too complicated in the future. We’re going to use all the arguments possible so that Luis gets out in the best possible way.”

Were that to fail, Uruguay had the option of a cynical attempt to exploit the disciplinary system to enable Suárez to play in their last-16 encounter with Colombia at the Maracana.

Despite promising a decision on the case as a matter of “urgency”, Fifa was on Wednesday unable to guarantee any appeal launched by the 27-year-old would not allow him to play again at the tournament. It did confirm that its disciplinary committee, six of whom were sitting in judgment of Suárez, had the discretion to take the striker’s previous seven-game and 10-game suspensions for biting into account when issuing any sanction, which could include a worldwide ban of up to two years. Panel member Martin Hong said: “It’s our duty to see justice done.”

Suárez’s repeat offending placed him at serious risk of being handed the longest suspension in World Cup history, exceeding the eight games sat out by Italy’s Mauro Tassotti for breaking the nose of Spain’s Luis Enrique in 1994.

The implications of any punishment are dire for the Uruguayan, who will face the wrath of Liverpool and his own and the club’s sponsors. His employers kept their counsel on Wednesday, having stood by their talisman after he was banned for biting Branislav Ivanovic last year.

Liverpool’s shirt sponsor, Standard Chartered, indicated it was awaiting Fifa’s verdict, as did Suárez’s boot supplier, Adidas.

Bookmaker 888.com, for whom Suárez is an ambassador, confirmed it had already begun reviewing its relationship with him.

A lengthy ban that includes club football, meanwhile, could scupper Suárez’s hopes of forcing an £80 million summer move to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

The player was under armed guard on Wednesday as soldiers patrolled Uruguay’s team hotel in Natal in response to the storm that has engulfed him.

The team were given strengthened security in and around the beachfront Serhs Hotel prior to their departure.

Suárez was among those not to train on Wednesday when some of the Uruguay squad were put through their paces at the Maria Lamas Farache Stadium.

Those asked about his bite continued to be in denial on Wednesday night, with captain Diego Lugano responding to a question about the incident by scoffing: “What incident? The pictures don’t show anything. They show an approximation.” That was despite the emergence of footage suggesting Suárez might also have attempted to bite Chiellini during last summer’s Confederations Cup.

The Professional Footballers Association, whose members voted Suárez their player of the year this season, urged him to seek help to “eradicate” his recurring problems”.

Chief executive Gordon Taylor said: “Issues with regard to biting is something not normally associated with senior players in the game. It can’t be acceptable and there are serious issues to be dealt with. They’re health issues, counselling issues, mental health issues. It certainly needs that to try to eradicate this from his make-up. Otherwise, I fear for his career.”

  27. I know biting is wrong. I know punching is wrong. But as someone who spent many years on a rugby pitch (didn’t hear the final whistle- boom boom) I’d struggle not to wet myself if the next bite victim didn’t deck him and knock out his 2 front teeth leaving him the poster boy for steradent.

    That said, peace up Timdom.

  28. If Chomper Suarez’s defence lawyer is lurking, here’s the defence which will get him off with the latest biting charge

I haven’t seen any tv picture which shows rat-boy actually sinking his teeth into the defender, so if he just says that he was trying to put his head on the defenders shoulder, and because his cowdenbeath are that big they made first contact with said shoulder, then thats where the teeth marks came from
