Haphazard and Wasteful football management

1037

Appointing a manager is an incredible gamble but the risks can be mitigated, especially at a club which is successful or even pointing in the right direction.  In this case, clubs should look to build upon whatever platform they have.  Bringing in a new guy with a team development strategy which is completely different from the existing plan accentuates the risks.

This is why the boot room strategy is successful over any extended period.  Build on what you have, sign players needed by the squad and who have been scouted extensively.  The new man may or may not prove to be the world’s best coach but at least he’ll have a successful infrastructure to insulate the club from lurching into oblivion.

When Gordon Strachan succeeded Martin O’Neill, Gordon picked up a scouting folder, flew to Poland and got on with the development project, much as Martin would have, had he stayed.  Celtic were technically no less successful when Tony Mowbray took over in 2009 but the team, and strategy, were tired.  A change of direction was appealing, we couldn’t continue to sign Hibs players, although the execution of the new strategy was flawed.  The writing was on the wall from the moment we signed £3.9m Marc-Antoine Fortune.

Neil Lennon was an enormous gamble when he was appointed in 2010.  He was a rookie, had never signed a player, won a trophy (as manager), or deployed a game plan in anger.  There were a few facts in his favour.  He’d worked with the other coaches at the club, as well as chief scout, John Park, and Peter Lawwell.  For years, they shared a development vision.  Celtic retreated into a strategy closely aligned to the vision of the remaining technical staff.

Despite the Scottish Cup semi-final debacle against Ross County Neil got the job, spent much of the next year learning a few painful lessons and hasn’t looked back since.  The club gambled on the guy with ultimate responsibility, but they knew he was not about the step out on a ledge.

The time to have a root-and-branch clear-out is following a John Barnes-type season.  The manager was wrong, as was tactics, scouting and team development plan.  Martin O’Neill brought with him radical and necessary change.  This worked at Celtic but, if anything, it is even more risky than appointing a rookie.  The lower leagues of England are full of clubs who have gambled unsustainable money on a manager only to come a cropper.

There are gems out there, Pochettino and Simeone, for example, but finding them is a challenge.  Pochettino pitched up at Southampton after being sacked by a hugely underperforming Espanyol, and Simeone got the Atletico Madrid job after several years of average-to-poor returns.

Big Davie Moyes was a good manager at Everton but watching him at Manchester United was a bit like watching him 30 years ago in a Celtic shirt.  He started by dismantling whatever platforms were in place and served notice he would be following a Haphazard and Wasteful player recruitment policy on the final day of last summer’s transfer window by blowing all his pocket money on a guy he didn’t need and refused to sign for less money a few weeks earlier. He had to go.

Neil Ashton, respected English hack, was told by folk at Chelsky that Islam wouldn’t be likely to cut it with them.

Is he good enough for us? Possibility. As for money, Celtic have plenty.

    I hope you feel better.

    Remarkably positive for you Ernie.

I thought you might claim celtic would be the LAST club Feruz would wish to play for.

Yes its straight to the stomach but as its obviously narrower than the oesophagous and there is no muscle action I’ll have to adjust portion size and consistency to avoid blockages. It will of course make any eating out.an issue. That’s real shame for my wife who deserves much better and has to cope wjth many additional tasks and issues with little opportunity for relieving the stress of me being dehydrated and sick. Not a nice thing to have to listen to when you’re unable to do anything to help.

  8. I was chatting to a very well known and well liked regular poster on this site earlier today.

The gist of our conversation was about who we had voted for in the past.

I had voted most times for Labour and twice for SNP and three times for Socialist parties. But the one thing that became clear was that the overwhelming majority of times I voted against my own best interests as a high earning. My much higher than the average wage meant I was voting to pay tax at a higher rate.

On Independence I never gave the economic analysis any consideration.

    CELTIC…2

    McManus 22, Henderson 29

    FALKIRK…0

FIRST-HALF goals from Connor McManus and Liam Henderson saw Celtic Under-20s return to winning ways against their Falkirk counterparts at Cappielow, putting their title challenge back on track.

McManus made the breakthrough when his crisp shot from 18 yards took a deflection to deceive goalkeeper Graham Bowman.

And Liam Henderson pounced on a rebound to put the young Hoops in command as they dominated the opening 45 minutes.

The Bhoys didn’t manage to achieve those same standards after the interval, with the visitors hitting the woodwork twice as they fought their way back into the contest.

However, Stevie Frail and John Kennedy’s youngsters held on for a much-needed three points following successive defeats to Hibernian and Hearts, keeping them hot on the heels of the Easter Road side at the top of the table and ahead of Rangers.

Knowing the importance of harvesting three points, the young Celts started with pace and purpose and Filip Twardzik slid a first-time shot narrowly wide from Patrik Twardzik’s pinpoint cross following a fluent passage of play down the left.

As the Bhoys continued to play at a high tempo and press relentlessly, further chances soon arrived. Jamie Lindsay supplied Denny Johnstone in the box and his powerful effort from an acute angle was parried by Bowman.

Henderson was next to turn provider. The visitors failed to deal with his dangerous delivery and John Herron reacted quickest, his thumping effort thwarted by the increasingly busy Bowman at the near post.

It was one-way traffic and the Bairns’ resistance was eventually broken in the 21st minute. Henderson’s corner was only partially cleared and McManus’ clean strike from the edge of the area found the net via a deflection off a defender.

The Bhoys were looking a threat every time they went forward now and only Bowman’s outstretched hand prevented a header from Fiacre Kelleher – a late replacement for Eoghan O’Connell in the starting XI – from finding the far corner.

Just before the half-hour mark, though, Bowman was beaten again as the home side doubled their advantage. Filip Twardzik’s delicate pass put Johnstone in the clear. His shot was saved by Bowman but Henderson was on hand to fire home.

Undeterred, Johnstone persevered in his quest for a goal, and he brought out another save from Bowman at his near post with a first-time effort from Fridjonsson’s cross.

And if Lindsay had managed to keep his header down from Johnstone’s inviting centre as half-time approached the youths could have enjoyed a more handsome lead at the interval.

But the hosts were given a warning that the game was far from over before the break as Scott Shepherd glanced a header wide from Conor Hogg’s cross.

Paul McMullan was introduced at the start of the second half for Patrik Twardzik and the winger was soon showcasing his speed and skills, embarking on mazy run through the middle. The ball was eventually worked to Henderson, who cut inside and curled a shot over.

The Bairns were more of a force after the restart and Hogg stole in behind the Celtic defence but blasted over from a tight angle.

And Leo Fasan had to react quickly and make an important save when a corner dropped invitingly for Luke Leahy at the far post.

At the other end, Lindsay’s drive from distance wasn’t far away as it took a deflection on its way past the post. A corner was the only reward, one which the young Hoops failed to capitalise on.

And as the game entered the last 20 minutes, they had to survive three scares as Shepherd and Robbie McNab struck the bar, and Leahy rolled a shot wide.

However, the young Celts held firm as the rain lashed down to end their losing streak and keep their hopes alive of a fifth successive league championship.

CELTIC (4-3-3) Fasan; Herron, Kelleher, Fraser, P. Twardzik (McMullan 46); Lindsay, McManus, Henderson; Johnstone (Thomson 79), Fridjonsson, F. Twardzik
