Hate, an odd hill to fight on

213

I’m no fan of the new Hate Crime Law (clearly, I’m against hate crime, that’s not the point), but I have no intention to break its terms at a football game, nor do I have any fears that thousands of Celtic fans would do so.  After announcing he and 48,000 others would break the law at Ibrox on Sunday, Ally McCoist has today decided it wise not to attend the game.  Police may be inclined to borrow an inflammatory phrase from McCoist, “I want to know who these people are?”

McCoist is known for his cheeky chappie routine (very effective), not his wisdom (seldom evident).  It really doesn’t matter if you would like to say that men should not enter women’s only spaces, it is very unwise to use that hill to fight for your right to spread hate against anyone.  In this case, I can only presume Ally has racial or religious targets in mind.  McCoist has energised a sentiment he should be discouraging.

God save us from idiots with a platform, be it a radio interview or political power.

  1. Children’s author, JK Rowling, was very clear regarding her thoughts and provided numerous examples. This allowed reasonable people (incl the local Police) to conclude that no crime was intended nor committed.

I would ask the failed sevco manager to be equally transparent. Give us examples of how you believe you and your fellow fans may fall foul of the new legislation. Be specific please. Have the courage of your convictions.

That will allow the wider public to make an equal determination.

Just because this particular act is flawed, doesn’t mean that the polar opposite of ‘anything goes’ is correct.

Scottish society suffers from various deeply held biases. Sadly, these can often end in an A&E ward. High profile football pundits should never enable or encourage discriminatory behaviours.

    Cheeky Chapie?

Village Idiot is a more accurate description.

Need to be careful what I write. Just realised village idiots might take offence being compared to McCoist.

Livingston FC have issued a statement criticising the Green Brigade for their 3-stand tifo and other banners on Sunday, although the statement is rather confusing is it appears to imply that the Celtic fans group were given prior permission to set-up the tifo. I for one am left wondering if it was the nature of the tifo — the Irish tricolour — that gave the Livi gston officials a problem.

Finally, the statement talks about a group of touring Americans who contacted Livingston in advance for access to view “a Scottish soccer game”. It seems panic ensued when some of the tourists turned up in Celtic colours.

They were allowed to take up their seats in the home stand only on condition that they remove their Celtic colours. Presumably the local supporters could not be trusted to treat their overseas guests with decorum.

So much for Scotland and its so-called family clubs.

Be careful, calling an idiot an idiot may be construed as a hate crime.

Remember Police Scotland are obliged to investigate all allegations no matter who the alligator is.

  7. you can still have an opinion on something, what you cannot do then is use that opinion as the excuse for threatining someone with violence.

you can say “that guy is an idiot form the village”

you cannot say, then, so it is ok if i batter him.

i am struggling to understand again why people are uptight about it.

i await piers morgan to tell us his thoughts.

No surprise to anyone that McCoist is an idiot.

I just didn’t realise he came from EK village.

  9. As soon as I had read McCoists comments on the Hate Bill yesterday, and his ” Admission” that HE and 48,000 others who will be in Ibrox on Sunday, WILL be Breaching the Hate Bill, I Posted on here some of his comments.

My first thought yesterday, WAS/IS McCoist actually Breaking the Law by declaring HIS INTENTION to Breach the Hate Bill……and should he be charged by the Cops ?

IF I walked up to a Cop and told Him/Her of my INTENTION to ROB a Bank on a certain Day, and within a certain time limit ( 90 odd Minutes), could that Cop arrest me on ” SUSPICION” ?

Likewise, IF I walked up to a Cop and told Him/Her that I HATE what they represent, could they arrest me as part of the Hate Crime Bill ?

When I Posted yesterday about McCoists comments, I also asked IF his ” Job” as a TV Pundit was now affected, following his comments, I now read Today that McCoist is back tracking on his intention to be at Ibrox on Sunday.

Has someone from TV Land had a word in his ear since yesterday ? How can this CHUMP be employed by any TV Company on Football coverage, when he has stated his intention to not only break the law, but also that he ADMITS that he obviously HATES Celtic FC, and doing so whilst being PAID by a TV Company ?

He’s NOT only a CHUMP…..Hopefully, he will be an UNEMPLOYED CHUMP, with immediate effect ?

How can he EVER be viewed as an UNBIASED Pundit in a TV Studio or in a Touchline basis in ANY Match involving Celtic FC ?

If you think you have witnessed a hate crime, then they ask you to report it. That much is clear.

Hate is very much open to interpretation and one person’s context may be different to another’s.

What is not in doubt is Sunday at the Victorian Lavy will definitely be a hatefest of epic proportions.

Phone lines should be so hot that even artificial plants will wilt.

Also never any doubt in my mind about his anti-catholic attitudes despite his attempts to make light of them.

Obviously someone in TV land has had a word with him, he’s not the brightest, absolutely…..

  13. garygillespieshamstring on

I always objected to the idea that he was in some way their equivalent to Tommy Burns.

No comparison. One of them was a thoroughly decent human being and the other one is a horrible, sleekit individual.

  14. Talking of ” SUSPICION”….I have long SUSPECTED that McCoist was a CHUMP !

As for his ” Cheeky Chappie ” CRAP….I seem to remember that a number of Celtic supporters complained to the Cops and Celtic FC, about McCoists behaviour when he was a Sub during a Celtic v Huns game at Celtic Park one evening, and as he ” Warmed Up” on the Touchline near the Main Stand, he was calling Celtic CHILDREN….” FENIAN BASTARDS”.

Of course, NOTHING was ever done by the Cops and/or Celtic FC in relation to McCoists conduct ( as far as I am aware ? )

I have NEVER accepted his so called ” Cheeky Chappie Personna” back in the Day….and certainly I will never change my view of him forever more.

  15. Let’s be honest here please. McCoist is a clown who thinks he’s a clever smart arse, he is not.

Big Jimmy would call him a chump, accurate rating in my book.

    Best ignore him

    SAINT STIVS

It was the same when Scotland introduced the bill to stop parents punishing their children with violence.

Everyone mocked it as meaning parents were risking arrest by admonishing their child with a slap on the leg/wrist.

That whole law emanated from a Glasgow dental receptionist who phoned the police to report a father who dragged her terrified 8-year-old daughter across his knee, pulled down her pants in front of several horrified onlookers. and proceeded to thrash her bottom for the crime of playing-up due to her great fear of the dentist.

In that case and a similar incident in a Glasgow restaurant, the police could not act because the humiliating beatings were administered by parents.

The new law made such thrashings a criminal offence. However, it was open season on “we can’t discipline our own children with a wee slap on the wrist” which was the equivalent of today’s “we can be jailed for exercising free-speech in our own homes”.

Utter nonsense of course and the perogative of the hard of thinking, like JK Rowling, who thinks it means she can’t call a trans woman a man. She can, but she can’t then pursue or harass the person with that.

  19. I read McCoist’s comments and they came as no surprise. I don’t know who he was speaking to but they obviously bottled asking a very obvious question after he spoke…. Ally, how exactly will you and 48,000 other people at Ibrox break hate crime laws ?

  21. I seem to remember the Late, Great Bertie Auld telling the story of his ” Exchange” with a certain Scottish Referee during a match, which went along the lines of…..

BERTIE..to the Ref.. ” IF I called you an Orange Bastard, you could send me off” ?

BERTIE…to the Ref….” What IF I just THINK your an Orange Bastard” ?

You’re missing the point, the police are still obliged to investigate all complaints.

If you think you have witnessed a hate crime, then they ask you to report it. That much is clear.

The point YOU are missing is, if someone reports a hate crime to the police and in describing the incident, he or she names someone who claimed to hate Catholics / Jews / Blacks / Gays / Transexuals or whatever in his or her own home in from of friends who are none of the above, common sense dictates that the policemen will confirm who exactly it was said to and under what circumstances and state that no crime was committed. The cop has therefore investigated the complaint and dismissed it.

The billboards about reporting hate crime are more about the incidents we have all seen online where a bus or train passenger for example, is racially or homophobically abused by a stranger in front of witnesses.
