Hate, an odd hill to fight on

213

I’m no fan of the new Hate Crime Law (clearly, I’m against hate crime, that’s not the point), but I have no intention to break its terms at a football game, nor do I have any fears that thousands of Celtic fans would do so.  After announcing he and 48,000 others would break the law at Ibrox on Sunday, Ally McCoist has today decided it wise not to attend the game.  Police may be inclined to borrow an inflammatory phrase from McCoist, “I want to know who these people are?”

McCoist is known for his cheeky chappie routine (very effective), not his wisdom (seldom evident).  It really doesn’t matter if you would like to say that men should not enter women’s only spaces, it is very unwise to use that hill to fight for your right to spread hate against anyone.  In this case, I can only presume Ally has racial or religious targets in mind.  McCoist has energised a sentiment he should be discouraging.

God save us from idiots with a platform, be it a radio interview or political power.

It was the fines being imposed made McCoist utter that… no fines you wouldn’t have heard a cheep from him. Remember the KLAXON horn at Ipox…. whatever happened to it?

Both good points. I also note an early airing of ‘who are these people’.

A rabble rouser then and now.

However, the article would provide any competent journalist with an interesting angle for a follow up piece.

  5. Thinking back there to Bobby Craig, who played in the Hi Hi final game at Boagheid, he was nae spring chicken, 27, when he joined us hopefully to help bring on the Kelly Kids, he signed on the same day we played our first European game against Valencia where he impressed in a 2-2 draw, the schoolboy me was at that game with my da and all around us you could hear “whose that” as we had no inkling he was on our horizon, when identified he was remembered from his time with the Hi Hi first time round as well as Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers as a cultured inside forward NEVER a right winger.

He seemed to be the player we were looking for but somehow was in and out of the team and then when the winter of 63 blew in games were curtailed for a bit but not before he scored 2 and set up the Bear for his hat trick up at the pen 4 days after we had been humiliated in Paddy Crerand’s last game at the bigot dome, a game I had sneaked up tae see.

So, in and out he went but surprisingly he was chosen instead of the wee mhan, in a position that was alien to him, in that fateful replay where our supporters started to leave around half time when the huns were chantin “Celtic Ha Ha Ha” and “Easy Easy Easy” an old boxing chant, that summer they referred tae us as “Bob Kelly and the Easybeats” a play on the 60s pop groups that were now breaking through

Incidentally, 10 days later Pat Crerand would star for Man United in there 3-1 victory over Leicester City

That close season he left for St Johnstone in a swap deal that saw Ian Young’s brother Bobby, who never played a first team game in the hoops, come to us, what we were never told was that he had been asked to sign a reduced contract for the next season with his wages reduced to £7 a week, as a married man with four weans he refused to re-sign, so after 21 appearances and an impressive 13 goals, Bobby’s Celtic dream was over, Glasgow Celtic that is.

As after a spell in down south with Oldham he moved to Toronto, where he partnered the legendary Stanley Matthews, where he was instrumental in helping to establish the Toronto Celtic Supporters Association, he also coached the highly successful Toronto Celtic, where incidentally my brother played, and to this day you will NEVER hear a bad word about him with the oulder expats over here, as Bobby never uttered a crass word about our club even though they threw him under the proverbial bus.

I love seeing the pictures of the various Lions. The set last week featuring Bertie was particularly good and made me think how lucky we are (were) to have had a team that feared no-one and beat the best the world had to offer. Jock Stein was an unbelievable manager for us. We owe him so much for putting that side together.

TONTINE TIM did say jinky replaced by Bobby Craig. Frank Brogan out Stevie Chalmers in the replayed game. Sickner of a result.

  16. Seventeen-year-old Hughes was given his Celtic debut in the opening game of the 1960/61 season, the home League Cup-tie with Third Lanark on Saturday, 13 August 1960, perhaps a reward for his efforts in the annual pre-season ‘public trial’ match at Parkhead in midweek, where his ‘green-and-whites’ had beaten the ‘whites’ (wearing the classic shamrock kit) 4-0.

The Celtic team who took the field that afternoon in front of 25,000 fans was as follows:

Frank Haffey: Dunky MacKay & Jim Kennedy: Paddy Crerand, Billy McNeill & Bertie Peacock: Bobby Carroll, Stevie Chalmers, John Hughes, Neil Mochan & John Divers.

Divers had been a last-minute replacement for the injured Bertie Auld, however it was the debutant Hughes who almost made a dream start, presented with an opportunity within 10 seconds, following a mistake from a Thirds defender. On this occasion, he would be foiled by visiting goalkeeper Robertson, however, early in the second half, he did open his Hoops account, heading powerfully home from Peacock’s cross. And with 15 minutes to play, Hughes turned provider, slipping in Neil Mochan for the veteran forward to clinch a 2-0 victory.

The new star Bhoy would make way for the returning Auld two nights later, as the Hoops blew Rangers away with a 4-2 victory in the Glasgow Cup-tie at the same venue. A Divers double plus the obligatory Chalmers strike and an own goal from Harold Davis saw Celts through to the semi-final, with Millar also grabbing a brace for the beaten Ibrox side, in front of 50,000 fans. Frank Haffey had saved an Eric Caldow penalty early in the second half, with Celts 2-1 ahead at that time. The Hoops would meet weekend opponents Third Lanark in the last four.

John Hughes came back in for Bertie Auld as Celts played a third game in just five days with a visit to Firhill on Wednesday, 17 August 1960. A late Bobby Carroll equaliser kept the Hoops at the top of their League cup section, following Rangers 2-1 defeat at Cathkin the same night. The youngster was again involved in a Celtic goal. Having swapped places with outside-left Neil Mochan as the game edged towards its conclusion, his cross was converted by Carroll to complete the scoring at 1-1.
