Hayes, Burke and the exceptional Sinclair

Jonny Hayes and Oliver Burke are rightly receiving praise following the drubbing of St Johnstone yesterday, deservedly so.  I have a latent worry that Callum McGreogr will be moved to left back against Valencia on Thursday, as he was at Ibrox in December, but Jonny’s solid performance will hopefully see Brendan Rodgers maintain faith in him for our Europa League tie.

Burke is a handful to play against.  Still only 21, he has the speed and power to stretch a defence, which will occupy the thoughts of Valencia scouts as they plan for Thursday.    They will not want to leave space for him to exploit.

It says much the form of Scott Sinclair that his hat-trick was one of the less noteworthy aspects of the game.  10 goals in 9 games since Christmas is exceptional.  He has the experience and engine to find space.  Watch his run for the opening goal against St Johnstone.  When Oliver Burke crossed the ball, Scott was 20 yards from goal and not on any defender’s radar, but he made up 18 yards to get on the end of the cross.

All three players need confidence to be at their best.  If we want to come through a difficult February in good shape, helping them maintain their confidence will help.

  1. So there’ll be at least 1 Championship team in the semi final.

And to be fair the 4 ties are all arguably too close to call.

  2. We will be visiting Edinburgh twice in the space of 3 or 4 days. Hearts away in the league on the last Wednesday in February then Hibs in the quarter final.

  3. Hi JNP,

Nice one with the red throated diver.

Fox, Gardyne, Fraser and Lindsay was my guess. McCart and Chalmers you could well be right.

  4. Why is a craft infested 8th place team 25 points and a 39 gd behind us a tough draw home or away.

Why should guys on 10 to 30k per week worry about going to Edinburgh twice in 4 days – I had to commute for years.

    Softiescsc?

  7. Last time away to Hibs we went 3 at the back & they cut us open on the break. They have gone back a fair bit and we have come on. Now boosted with new loanees we have more options if anyone is injured.

I have no doubt we will go with an orthodox system at the back & an additional benefit is if it’s level or one ahead we won’t have to chase the game as a draw would be acceptable.

  8. Interesting comment from Martin O’Neill today on Sevco loanee Worrel. Looks like Sevco had to play him in a certain number of games or his loan deal would be recalled. So, Notts Forest are helping pick the Sevco team.,and he’s gash…

  9. T.T.

I don’t fear Easter Rd but !! we haven’t won there for a while.

    It’s a dangerous tie.

    Hail Hail

  10. Me tae jinkyredstar, we arrived early and went tae a pub close by, it was mobbed so the doors were locked. As we were leaving my da picked up a kerry oot, in true Dumbarton style we had a ginger bottle with whisky in it. Sat down behind the goal and he opens the kerry oot, norseman lager, the only pint I ever left behind in a pub, still drunk it that day. As we left jubilantly John Blackley was spotted in a car leaving, he didnae play that day.

Went back tae the Bonnie Banks via Dunfermline, they got promoted that day so they celebrated with us. That’s when they were a nice club.

  11. Tontine – I was 15 so Norseman was probably my limit!

Back to Greenock on the bus – brilliant time

  12. Favourite Uncle: Hope you are enjoying your visit to Dublin.

If you are still here tomorrow afternoon leave a message and I’ll try and catch up with you.

  13. I was at hunden when the harry wraggs beat us in the LC final, 5 weeks later we went tae Firhill with only 3 different players, Denis Connaghan, Big Billy and Dixie, although there were as many positional changes, the Maryhill Magyars played their cup winning side, we gubbed them 5-1.

Will be a different Celtic side that goes tae Easter Road on March 2 and lets not forget we comfortably took care of them 5 days ago.

  14. Som mes que un club on

All 4 1/4 Finals will be televised live. Most likely Celtic and KillieSevco on Premier Sports.

Saturday kick off 4.45 and 1.30 on Sunday, and whatever BBC decide to televise…

  15. The Thistle final was mental – we could actually have about 9-4 but nothing worked. Shite on the day but not so bad looking back – we had a helluva run of poor league cup finals from 69 onwards

  16. In all of my lifetime I don’t remember a Celtic v Hearts cup final.

Must be due one sometime soon.

This year would be fine for it.

    Celtic v Hearts 1956

Bob Kelly dropped inside right Bobby Collins and played right back Mike Haughney in his position.

Mike had never played there in his life, before or since. Ironically, he scored our goal, if I remember correctly.

As said, Hearts were a great team then, with a magical inside forward trio of Conn(father of Alfie), Bauld and Wardhaugh.
