Helicoptering in central defenders

278

I know we are all concerned about the injury crisis affecting central defence, but it is difficult to move the dial here in the short term.  Central defence is overwhelmingly about partnerships.  You can try to helicopter someone into the team (think Carl Starfelt two years ago) but it seldom provides an immediate return.

If we only have two fit central defenders, Brendan will use the time he has to school them for the immediate challenges.  Liam Scales and Gustaf Lagerbielke will be spending a lot of time together this week.

You and I have discussed the need for significantly more wingers than we would have in the squad in earlier times, due to the five substitutes rule.  Most managers are reluctant to change defensive or central midfield players, meaning forwards are more commonly swapped out during games.

No surprise then that we are linked with another winger, this time 23-year-old Honduran, Luis Palma, who joined Aris Thessalonica in January 2022.  He would be our third new winger this window, with four others still in the first team squad (and that’s not counting Rocco Vata).  Surely at least one will move on?

Let’s hope Maik’s injury is lighter than feared. We must be up for the inevitable physicality of Beales bullies. HH#

QUAD, on the basis of Tuesday’s Hun v PSV game the Hun forwards are big guys but did not appear at all physical. On the other hand their midfield was very reliant on physicality, usually within the rules because of the French referee, but 4 of them still ended up getting yellow cards (and Cantplaywell was told clearly by the ref that one more foul and he was off, which led to a rapid substitution).

Of course no such controls on their overly physical approach will be applied by the Scottish referee of choice.

As predicted Mark Lawwell would be a failure as he has had zero track record. The soundbites from Ange were baloney requesred by guess who. Celtic support swallowed a whopper aided and abetted by the usual suspects (guess who).

Rodgers played along to keep the peace , now he states he needs quality ( in other words not the hopeless causes signed). Mark Lawwell is out of his depth and this window of failure will be known as the Mark Lawwell window.

  5. A CH will be almost certainly be brought in on a loan till Jan or end of season. If it was going to happen, better now when we can do something about it than in a month when the window has shut.

In hindsight, the decision to play CCV through the pain barrier for all those months last season. was not a good one. His body is paying the price of it now.

If the Korean lad was the only midfield signing which he is not and if he had actually played most of his football in the B league which he didn’t then maybe signing him might be like signing O’Riley from 3rd tier England or Harare from Japanese obscurity or Moravcik from French league 2 or McLeod from Dumbarton or Mooy from China or even Jota who had failed in Spain or Tully from Irish obscurity.

Don’t let any examples of previous success get in the way of your negativity.

Not seen any ideas from you on who we could sign yet ? You don’t seriously expect me to believe that’s above your level of knowledge and experience of the global game ?

Surely with your strongly held views as to what is wrong you must have a view on what might actually be right and workable ?

  7. Scales has got to play at Ibrox, bringing in a CB with no Experience of Scottish football to play alongside a young guy who has only played one game for us would be madness.

Scales played well in various games against the Ibrox mob for Aberdeen last season, even scoring the last time he played against them.

All those doom and gloom merchants criticising the lad should give it a rest, with the injuries we’ve got in the defence we’ve got to hope that Scales can step up to the plate and that AJ is fit to play.

The midfield worries me, The Rangers are playing 4 there and it pains me to say it, but if you give Cantwell room he can hurt you. BR says he’ll do his best with what he’s got, the next two weeks will test his managerial skills. 4 Points from 6 will from the next two games would be good.

  8. bournesouprecipe on

Reckon we’ve been involved in a game of poker with Hatate’s agent since before pre season. Reo was hooked by BR, then dropped for the first league game. No contract extension whilst in a window that might bring a better offer from a better league.

All depends on whether there are suitors and a bid just like Juranovic Giakoumakis Jota and then Starfelt. If you sign your Kyogo McGregor and Maeda.

    We now have new windows.

  9. And what if they get injured?….we need emergency short term cover preferably experienced…even a loan to January……we’ve gone from best partnership in years to liam Scales and a young Swedish lad who won’t know what’s hit him …!!

  10. PSV have no Centre Backs and have been trying to sign the right calibre since Bosz came in as manager. He said on Wednesday there was no news on that and still looking. They are in a similar pond as us in that regard. It is not the easiest market to buy guaranteed success.

We signed VVD and Moyoloku (not sure on spelling) on same day or so. Few would have been certain none would be such a success and the other a complete disaster. Julien had something but was missing something also.

Rangers with Katic and Helander and Davis. All disasters.

Starfelt was slaughtered on here for months but actually proved to be a very astute signing whose value has rocketed since we sold him in the eyes of the fans. CCV was a failure at each loaned club before he came to us.

None of this is an exact science. No one pretends it is. Applying science helps but doesn’t make it perfect. The market is random and imperfect also. Very imperfect.

What I can’t accept, unlike many on here seem to, is that anyone with a financial interest in the success of the club is not doing all they can to ensure 2023/4 CL qualification. Bigger cake and more of it for those at the table.

  12. Ten Men Won The League

I think Ange drained our resources dry. Eg CCV.

Just look at the last 8 or 9 games or so last season. We were running / walking on empty.

Many players should have rotated earlier.

Mooy Kyogo AJ Ralston CCV Starfelt Kobyashi Cal Taylor, O’Riley, Hatate GG and all suffered injury at some stage and many toward the end of the season.

We are paying a price for this now.

That said we can still go and win at Ibrox. I actually believe we will go to the international break 5 or 7 points clear after 4 games played.

Anyone who remembers 10 men winning the league will also remember the Mike Conroy and Roy Aitken centre half pairing a year later winning the cup final v thems. Same negativity pervaded the club since Real Madrid beat us in the EC Qtr final. We blew the league v Aberdeen and we had injuries galore. The team dug deep and won in extra time at Hampden. Mike and Roy were outstanding in central defence.

Scales and the big Swede don’t have the experience of those two but the know the positions. Scales knows the terrain.

The other lot will have played a high octane playoff mid week. We will have fresh legs and been focused. We have a decent manager who will be energised for this task at least. We Willy age a few debutants for this fixture but they will have a few more than us. PSV might well have done us a turn by then also.

  19. As it looks like we wont have much experience in central defence i would switch to a 4 in midfield with 2 up front, 1 of the 4 in the middle could be a mobile winger who has a bit of a dig in him , but under no circumstances go to Ibrox and play footballers who are out numbered, if we do we will lose. The 4 might also protect the back 4 more. a draw there at the moment would be fine , but St johnstone first in a game we want to get a bit of confidence back .

Both tremendous memories, good to see them brought back!

We’ll almost certainly have another CH to help out till Xmas anyway. Fixtures wise, as i mentioned earlier, we have 2 tricky games in that period when CCV & Rocky are out. You never know, aside from the zombies, it actually might encourage teams to cross the halfway line against us!

    Thanks for the data.

I knew they had taken in a lot but hadn’t appreciated quite how much.

The numbers are a bit bigger than ours but the model is sadly the same. Our match day and corporate revenue is far greater than theirs. Overall we are not miles apart as clubs.

It is wrong for football that we see such as Luton and Bournemouth and Brentford and similar with revenues dwarfing ourselves and PSV and Porto and Ajax and others who have won the big cup.

  24. First second and fourth choice center backs out for 8 weeks

That’s just bad luck. First 2 probably 3 cl games.

I’d say that torpedoes our chances of finishing third, it’s certainly a very hard ask now

  25. Bournesouprecipe

Thanks re TV rights. As I mentioned match day and corporate are the only areas we beat the top Dutch teams.

I hadn’t realized the tv gap was quite as great. The gap from theirs to EPL is of a similar multiple kind you.

Scary stuff. It explains why they were not seeing the Atlantic league proposition or the combination with Belgium as quite so attractive or necessary.

I disagreed with the original decision not to sell a dedicated keeper jersey, strange decision.

There has been no criticism of the English circus around the Spain penalty.

Meanwhile, FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales for his behaviour at Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final. FIA will look at whether those actions constitute violations of article 13 in its disciplinary code, concerning offensive behaviour and fair play.FIA says disciplinary measures can be brought against anyone “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”, “insulting a natural or legal person in any way, especially by using offensive gestures, signs or language” or “behaving in a way that brings the sport of football and/or Fifa into disrepute”.

Bronze and Earps at the penalty ? Heroic lionesses.

  27. With a few pleasant exceptions, I am finding CQN rather a dismal place at the moment. Populated, as it is, by a mixture of uninformed experts, fear of Sevco and general negativity.

  28. Celtic 40 me

It’s overlooked by many that we didn’t have our first choice partnership in defense once in the CL group games last season.

Maybe same again unfortunately but who knows opportunity may present itself and be grasped by our Pole, Swedish, Irish defenders and whoever else.

  29. It certainly helps when you can sell three players from the academy for €110m like PSV did last summer and the summer before.

  30. CCV’s lay off is a devastating blow. Our form at the end of last season fell off a cliff in his absence. No need to panic though, we’ve got loads of cash earning lots of interest and Liam Scales to fill the void…
