Helicoptering in central defenders

278

I know we are all concerned about the injury crisis affecting central defence, but it is difficult to move the dial here in the short term.  Central defence is overwhelmingly about partnerships.  You can try to helicopter someone into the team (think Carl Starfelt two years ago) but it seldom provides an immediate return.

If we only have two fit central defenders, Brendan will use the time he has to school them for the immediate challenges.  Liam Scales and Gustaf Lagerbielke will be spending a lot of time together this week.

You and I have discussed the need for significantly more wingers than we would have in the squad in earlier times, due to the five substitutes rule.  Most managers are reluctant to change defensive or central midfield players, meaning forwards are more commonly swapped out during games.

No surprise then that we are linked with another winger, this time 23-year-old Honduran, Luis Palma, who joined Aris Thessalonica in January 2022.  He would be our third new winger this window, with four others still in the first team squad (and that’s not counting Rocco Vata).  Surely at least one will move on?

Re the penalty rule, as long as ‘keeper’s foot is “in line with” the goal line, it doesn’t have to be “touching” the goal line.

Maybe they should have added “hovering” above it. ( Careful with my spelling there. . hoovering could have got me into trouble).

I sold my Hoover last week….it was just sitting in the corner gathering dust.

At the end of last season Scales played for over 3 hours against Sevco in a defence that conceded only 1 goal, one of the games being at Ibrox.

He even scored 1 of Aberdeen’s 2 goals at Pittodrie.

So the bhoy’s got recent good form against them for any upcoming task surely, even if he wouldn’t be playing in the same defensive position or formation.

Still a bit to go in the window bhoys. Let’s see.

  6. RC- Don’t think that you would get a bet on him getting booked, not against having a more defensive shape,as long as we have the quick bhoys for a breakaway

  7. MOD

He hasn’t had a chance yet, been played all over the shop and very sporadically, he needs a run and I bet he will show why he was player of the year in Japan.

  8. Long ball Jock Stein?

Jock Stein – The father of Scottish football

He is generally credited with developing a tactical sense in British football. He was a tactical genius and was adept at using systems that promoted his team’s strengths while exploiting his opponent’s weaknesses. He was the first person who changed his team’s tactics during games and his players had been trained hard enough to respond to it. Stein was a big man and a big personality in every sense. Like Mourinho today, he had the ability to instantly become the center of attention and by all accounts was a motivator par-excellence.

‘Jock’s teams were essentially more than the sum of their parts. His teams had almost a perfect balance of skills. Jock’s knowledge of the game was huge and everything he did tactically was attuned to the capacities of his players’. – Sir Alex (Managing my life)

Scottish football had lost its greatest servant, and even though Stein passed away, his ideas found many followers. His views emphasizing on wing play, on playing two strikers upfront, on retaining possession, on playing at a high tempo with quick players lived on and to this day build the cornerstone of successful teams, Manchester United being the most notable amongst them. Ferguson was the assistant to Stein for the qualifiers to the 1986 world cup, and Stein’s imprint on United is obvious for the world to see. Ferguson summed Stein’s death perfectly in his autobiography – he wrote, “the silence was as if the king had died. In footballing terms, the king had died”.

Just been conversing with one of my ‘Shipwreck’ comrades.

A possible solution to our current central defender, I give you Daniel McGowan. massive Celtic supporter, however he is better at this compared to football.

  13. Winners meet challenges with solutions.

    Others make excuses.

We have a genuine injury crisis. Ccv and Aj were probably back too soon. Maik provably adjusting to different demands training wise. Also – playing on with a hamstring strain is plain stupid. Should have been subbed.

If we recruit a solid left back and could secure an experienced oven ready CB to bolster the squad we’d be in a decent place to battle on while the bhoys recover. If not, we will have to find other ways to cope like 3 at the back with AJ, Scales and Lagerbhoy

Hopefully some rabbits out of a big Celtic hat will have us all buzzing again soon but that’s likely to be after the weekend

Some of our but part bhoys are going to have to step up this weekend. 3 points are not a gimme. If we do get them though, I think we might be travelling to mordor in a good place.

Fearful as many appear to be about going to the Devils Arcade with Scales at CB and Taylor at LB, I think they have a better chance against Dessers, Danilo, Sima and Co than against the sand dancing, bambi on ice impersonators that were the departed Kent and Co.

If Brendan knows how to set up to control a midfield we will be in business.

Others have mentioned the meltdown we’d be kn if we’d drawn a home first leg qualifier to sub par PSV. It would be a sign we were woefully under prepared fir the season. Not reason for confidence for the next leg or upcoming Derby game.
