Helicoptering in central defenders

278

I know we are all concerned about the injury crisis affecting central defence, but it is difficult to move the dial here in the short term.  Central defence is overwhelmingly about partnerships.  You can try to helicopter someone into the team (think Carl Starfelt two years ago) but it seldom provides an immediate return.

If we only have two fit central defenders, Brendan will use the time he has to school them for the immediate challenges.  Liam Scales and Gustaf Lagerbielke will be spending a lot of time together this week.

You and I have discussed the need for significantly more wingers than we would have in the squad in earlier times, due to the five substitutes rule.  Most managers are reluctant to change defensive or central midfield players, meaning forwards are more commonly swapped out during games.

No surprise then that we are linked with another winger, this time 23-year-old Honduran, Luis Palma, who joined Aris Thessalonica in January 2022.  He would be our third new winger this window, with four others still in the first team squad (and that’s not counting Rocco Vata).  Surely at least one will move on?

True enough, but unfortunately the cl is such an unforgiving place, two inexperienced cbs will struggle I reckon.

But it is a great chance for someone to make a name for themselves in a Celtic shirt, even in defeat. It’ll certainly test everyone

I’m also encouraged that AJ will play on Saturday. Having his ability and experience in the back 4 will help the new guys.

  3. This could be the making of Scales, never had more than a couple of games at CB,a few at LB,he done very well with Aberdeen last season, give the guy a chance.

They got €8m last season. 35k seater stadium. COVID knocked their revenue down to €21m back in ’21.

Before we got lost in the spreadsheets, I like the profile they are acquiring. Said so a few times this week. I thought it’s where we’d go to with ll our cash and relative stability. It’s a tier up from our punt territory but definitely in need of a CH worthy of the name to ensure they knock out der hun next week.

    ==========

FIFA wrote after the game “As with all penalties, the Video Assistant Referee checked Spain’s penalty for encroachment by the goalkeeper and determined that Mary Earps’ back foot was in line with the goal line”.

My understanding of the rule is that “‘The defending goalkeeper must remain on the goal line, facing the kicker, between the goalposts until the ball is kicked. When the ball is kicked, the defending goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot touching, in line with, or behind, the goal line.”.

Earps’ left foot is clearly well in front of the line – her right foot is further back but not ‘touching’ anything. If I understand the rule correctly the penalty should have been retaken.

The film was released in America as “Get Charlie Tully”.

Uncle Pat of the Kearney CSC used to tell a story that Dick Emery was a Celtic supporter and had used the name in a film as he was a fan.

Nobody believed him, as he was a teller of tall tales, and then it appeared in an article of the time.

  16. Dutch World Cup legend Willy van de Kerkhof reckons PSV Eindhoven don’t deserve to be in the Champions League if they can’t beat a team like Rangers.

But former PSV and Dutch international van de Kerkhof – who played in two World Cup Finals for the Netherlands in 1974 and 1978 – reckons PSV will complete the job in Eindhoven.

He said: “If PSV don’t qualify against a team like Rangers, then they have no right to be in the group stages of the Champions League.

Veerman was disappointed that his side will not be taking a lead back to Eindhoven, but he is still confident that they will get the job done next week.

He explained: “We had the ball for 90 minutes – maybe after the first fifteen minutes we controlled the game. We had opportunities, but not real opportunities.

“That is becoming a repetitive story, we are not just one man in the sixteen. We have many players who would like to have the ball, but too little going forward. We have to work on that.

“Rangers shoot balls into the stands throughout the game.”

  17. Its not about the amount of money spent or the amount of big name players about the place although utilised properly these things come in handy.

Its about getting a manager who knows that there is more than one way to play the game and to not fall into the trap of trying to play the rewriters of history method called “The Celtic Way.”

Which even big Jock`s teams didn`t play most of the time as his full backs 90% of the time played the long ball up to the opposition box, Craig, Gemmell, McGrain, Lynch, Hay, Brogan, Sneddon, etc, all played the long ball diagonal or straight up the park.

the fabled “Celtic Way” is a myth made up when fans became snobs on the back of the introduction of all seating which was Thatcher`s long term plan for seated fans to turn stadiums into sheep pens full of snobs and entitled wasters.

    Has Thatcher won!

Well how much resistance have fans shown to the Capitalist colonisation of football, I`d say there are few examples if any, (Hearts fans being the exception) of fans having any power over the Capitaslist poisoning of what used to be the working man`s game.

Most conversations are about money when in the Stein era us Tims used to laugh at how much money the huns had spent only to fall short of laying a glove on Stein`s team.

What if every team in SPFL all copy McInnes tactics at the weekend, how many games will we win?

If for exanple, Stevie Clarke had been Hibs manager last night then Aston Villa would have hardly managed a shot at goals all night.

Might not be good to watch but the question “who do we think we are?” springs to mind.

Did anybody moan when Jack Charlton parked the bus and blootered the long ball on his C`mon You Mighty Greens tour back in the 80`s and 90`s, were he became such a hero for the Irish diaspora?

Did anybody moan when WGS parked the bus at Parkhead and fed off of long ball scraps to beat Man Utd?

Did anybody moan when NFL did the same and defeated the mighty Barcelona?

Did anybody moan when MON went to the Nou Camp and did the same to put Barcelona out of Uefa cup?

What Big Jack, WGS, NFL, and MON did to defeat these titans was the `real` Celtic Way, triumph of the underdogs.

We must be a play on the break team thats how we reached our last European final in 2003, if Stevie Clarke was Celtic manager we`d win a European trophy, is Clarke any better or worse than Moyes?

If, McInnes keeps playing it tight and hitting on the break he`ll end up at Ibrokes and if he does and retains that philosophy then Celtic will be rewound back to the early 1990`s and hun success will lead to Timmy anger and an overthrow of the PLC board based on the fan ownership model at Tynecastle.

Stinking rich people shouldn`t be allowed into Parkhead were Sir Rod the fraud and the crooked Michelle Mone are treated as part of the family by likeminds.

    Trivia

The Glasgow Herald reports little of this game other than to say that Celtic did well to secure the two points given that they were without McMenemy, Dodds, Cringan and McNair, the latter two having been in the Scotland side that beat Ireland 2-1 at Ibrox in front of a crowd of 50,000. Link

The Herald reports that the Ireland side that lost at Ibrox had three Belfast Celtic players in Elisha Scott, Daniel McKinney, and Mickey Hamill , the latter being no stranger to Glasgow Celtic.

The Herald is dominated with the various strikes by miners, dockers, railwaymen seeking improved working conditions and wages and reports of a meeting between the government led by Lord Privy Seal, Mr Bonar Law and representatives of the three major trade unions involved.

Cranston’s picture house in Glasgow is showing the silent movie “Nearly Married” starring Madge Kennedy.
