Henderson attempts to buck Celtic youth syndrome

624

For as long as you or I can remember, Celtic’s youth teams have had a fearsome reputation, winning countless titles, even with Kenny McDowall as head coach, but something inevitably goes wrong.  Clubs like Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts and even Hamilton Accies have a better record of graduating prospects, despite having a poorer youth team to pick from.

The other fearsome reputation we had, was that Celtic was one of the places young talent came to wither on the vine, before shuffling off to a minor club at around 21-years-old.  Where would you send your boy, Celtic or Dundee United………?

The argument goes that clubs like United have more opportunity to blood young talent than Celtic, who for long periods of the last 20 years were locked in an all-or-nothing battle for supremacy, or the need to reach the Champions League group stage, or the next level of the Champions League.  This theory doesn’t stand up to scrutiny, though, as clubs with higher still demands are able to mature young talent through first team exposure.

The truth is it’s never been a first team priority, as we have been caught in a ‘buy success’ mentality for close to 30 years.

Still only 18, Liam Henderson has as much chance as anyone who have come through the ranks in the last couple of decades of making it as a top player at Celtic, but he needs to be stretched by playing competitive senior football over the next three years, cameo appearances here and there will not provide the platform he needs.  A few months at Rosenborg, who kick off a new league season on Monday, will give him opportunities he’s not going to see at Celtic between now and the end of the season.

Did you see what newco director, Paul Murray, did with his stock market announcement yesterday?

He wrote, “‎I have been informed by Deloitte, the existing auditor, that they informed the previous Board of their intention to resign following the June 2014 audit. The previous Board chose not to announce this nor did they find a replacement for Deloitte. With limited time to have these results reviewed the Board asked Jeffreys Henry to perform the exercise as Independent Reporting Accountants, not auditors.”

On reading this many were inclined to conclude the reason Deloitte did not act as Independent Reporting Accountants for their interims was because they had left the building.  Not so.  Murray later confirmed to a Daily Record financial reporter (not the football guys) that Deloittes are still newco’s auditors.  I am sure there is a perfectly good reason they didn’t sign off the interims.  Maybe they were busy that day.

I read your post and I’m in total agreement, the players have to make the time and effort to meet the supporters and may I add…get them turning up at social events more often.

Celtic is a family club, more players should be encouraged to participate.

“ike many other bluenoses, I am underwhelmed to say the least by the recent pronouncements of our new Chairman, official or otherwise.

Paul Murray states that “taken in the context of the Club playing in the Championship division which should have delivered higher revenues and an improving financial performance.” He then mentions the “decision by sections of the support to demonstrate disaffection with the Board and also the football product.” So Rangers’ previous boards should have raked it in even although there was a concerted attempt to stifle revenue by those who wanted a blazer and seat in the Directors Box of their own? Right you are, Paul.

Was it not Mr King and Mr Murray who advocated the boycott and actively supported campaigners which led to the financial downturn? This is hypocrisy and two-facedness of a staggering nature. It is also an admission by Mr Murray that their own agitations were successful in damaging the ability of the previous board to run the club efficiently.

Of course, the stay away fans are Mr Murray’s darlings. Those who loyally bought tickets and kept the lights on have yet to hear our new Chairman express his gratitude for their loyalty. I’d suggest they don’t hold their breath. I’d bet that Mr Murray doesn’t have the guts to tell them what some of Kingco’s more fanatical followers have said – that these loyal supporters are no longer welcome.

Somebody has to pay for Kingco’s blazers. Given that the boycotters are still largely staying away, it will no doubt fall to the loyal fans once more, appreciated or otherwise…

Paul Murray is showing 2022 Vision. We laughed at Graham Wallace’s 120 day review. Now we face a seven year review by the new board. How long before we hear talk of stopping Celtic doing 20 in a row?

Then we have the big red herring of the 500K to be paid to Newxcastle should Rangers win promotion this year. These loan signings have provided much for the new regime to spin about. I have heard conflicting accounts about whether or not the loanees received medicals but putting that aside, I will say only this: if the big lad Haris Vuckic scores any more goals and helps Rangers gain promotion, the £500k fee to Newcastle will be the best money Rangers have ever spent. And still a great deal less than it costs to keep the former manager in his slippers of a day.

As for Deloitte’s resignation as auditors, no mention of why. The reality is that because of threats to the safety of Deloitte’s employees they decided to dramatically increase their fee. The old board decided to have a beauty parade but were then overtaken by events.

Mr Murray talks of the years of “neglect and disrespect for the club.” Strangely he omits to mention the despotic reign of Sir David Murray and the wildly irresponsible financial management of the club in these days – when both he and Dave King sat on the board. These were the events that led to the purchase of the club for £1 by Craig Whyte. Funnily enough Mr Murray’s rewind analysis of inefficient boards only goes back four years and conveniently misses out his own tenure.

Mr Murray commits the club to fan representation on the board – something his colleague Dave King has spoken against in the past. King’s view of fans buying shares was once curtly described by him as “rubbish, rubbish.” Paul Murray’s view of a club with significant fan ownership is wildly at odds with this. And also something even less likely to happen once delisting decimates the value of shares.

Lastly it is likely that if no Nomad is in place by close of business Thursday the club will face permanent delisting. This will very probably lead to significant losses by major shareholders and remaining institutions. My information is that, as Dave King categorically said that a Nomad was imminent, various shareholders are talking about suing and/or reporting him to the Police/FCA for a) misleading investors and b) causing them material losses through these statements.

Of course, whether or not these shareholders make good on such threats remains to be seen (some reports I have heard say this process has already started) but it is a sobering reflection of how serious the situation is. Actual share price may mean little to supporters but it is of utmost importance to investors and a decimated share price is bad for business – and anathema to any future prospective investors.

Give the new regime their due – they have made sure that they have the convenient scapegoat of the old board to blame should the train hit the buffers. As each day goes by, however, this is becoming a more transparent strategy.

Even so without watching it I would have missed Sam Wollaston’s review of it in the Guardian without which I would not have learned, via Kim Wilson’s letter in said publication today of Stanley Holloway’s biblical epic of eighty years ago, ‘Three Ha’pence a Foot’, the story of the Ark, transposed to Manchester;
