Henderson attempts to buck Celtic youth syndrome

624

For as long as you or I can remember, Celtic’s youth teams have had a fearsome reputation, winning countless titles, even with Kenny McDowall as head coach, but something inevitably goes wrong.  Clubs like Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts and even Hamilton Accies have a better record of graduating prospects, despite having a poorer youth team to pick from.

The other fearsome reputation we had, was that Celtic was one of the places young talent came to wither on the vine, before shuffling off to a minor club at around 21-years-old.  Where would you send your boy, Celtic or Dundee United………?

The argument goes that clubs like United have more opportunity to blood young talent than Celtic, who for long periods of the last 20 years were locked in an all-or-nothing battle for supremacy, or the need to reach the Champions League group stage, or the next level of the Champions League.  This theory doesn’t stand up to scrutiny, though, as clubs with higher still demands are able to mature young talent through first team exposure.

The truth is it’s never been a first team priority, as we have been caught in a ‘buy success’ mentality for close to 30 years.

Still only 18, Liam Henderson has as much chance as anyone who have come through the ranks in the last couple of decades of making it as a top player at Celtic, but he needs to be stretched by playing competitive senior football over the next three years, cameo appearances here and there will not provide the platform he needs.  A few months at Rosenborg, who kick off a new league season on Monday, will give him opportunities he’s not going to see at Celtic between now and the end of the season.

Did you see what newco director, Paul Murray, did with his stock market announcement yesterday?

He wrote, “‎I have been informed by Deloitte, the existing auditor, that they informed the previous Board of their intention to resign following the June 2014 audit. The previous Board chose not to announce this nor did they find a replacement for Deloitte. With limited time to have these results reviewed the Board asked Jeffreys Henry to perform the exercise as Independent Reporting Accountants, not auditors.”

On reading this many were inclined to conclude the reason Deloitte did not act as Independent Reporting Accountants for their interims was because they had left the building.  Not so.  Murray later confirmed to a Daily Record financial reporter (not the football guys) that Deloittes are still newco’s auditors.  I am sure there is a perfectly good reason they didn’t sign off the interims.  Maybe they were busy that day.

  1. A happy and holy Thursday to one and all.

On this lovely spring day, can I ask that CQN run a poll about days and times of kick off? I suspect most here, like me, are fed up to their back teeth (if they have any, of course) of us being at the beck and call of TV for the pittance we get in return. Give us back our Saturday 3 o’clock starts, please Celtic.

  6. My friends in Celtic,

Celtic have historically attracted a far greater proportion of their home crowd from afar than any opposition we play domestically.

Subsequently Sunday home games disproportionately affects us more than other Scottish teams.

Many ST holders find it impossible or extremely problematic to make a home game on a Sunday, yet they still purchase them.

The tickets are bought because of loyalty and empathy with the club but I totally agree with parkheadcumsalford that enough is enough.

Over to you PL, find a solution. It’s not easy, but that’s what earning big bucks is all about.

timaloy29. It could mean that but even if we only had him for the CL qualifyers that would be good. However,I think Rony has built a great team spirit and the players believe in him so big VVD might not be in such a big rush to leave.I not only think Rony is a good manager I also think he is a clever bloke and has probably put forward a good case to big Peter. I will probably get shot down in flames for saying this but I think Rony is the best manager we have had in along time. H.H.

GM-That’s a definite mate Thompson and Milne agreed it was more important for their fans to travel to Hampden in big numbers, and at a decent kick off time.So they refused TV money for LC Semi Final, and it kicked off at 3pm on a Saturday.A lesson for others possibly.HH

I didn’t think CQN needed revenue so much as to start using this type of stuff. It just puts me off visiting CQN, even in any new, future format. I’m sure it must annoy more viewers / posters / stakeholders / customers / fans than just me.

    Right, moan over.

  18. Bada Bing –

The individual clubs are not in a position to refuse to play at a particular time rather than have it changed for TV.

The SFA & SPFL have signed contracts with the broadcasters and if they say the game must go ahead on a Sunday at 12:15 there is not a thing the clubs can do about it, short of withdrawing from the competition.

To suggest that Dundee United refused to allow their LC semi to be moved from 3pm Saturday is not correct. First of all, SKY had the rights to broadcast one semi-final only.

Secondly, the idea that Thompson at United would refuse SKY’s money so that their fans could have a 3pm kick-off is just absurd. The man worships money and would never in a million years turn his back on that sort of cash for altruistic reasons.

We are running an ad as a trial for a month as a pop up, the first time this has happened. It is on desktops only so not on tablets or smart phones and it appears once per 24 hours. It takes a second to close.

As I said it is an experiment. We are spending quite a bit of cash developing the new site and one of the biggest costs involves transferring all historic data and securing all details from registered users. The new site is ready and we are just being ultra careful on this.

The plan is to pay for all of this via advertising. You can see the progress on the content side of site at http://www.cqnmagazine.com

I had a discussion with my brother about ST’s and kick off times last weekend.

I would say that only once in the past five years has it been worth while buying my ST and like you we are begining to think about just buying tickets per game.

The next two midweek games is a clear example, if there’s no local CSC going then its too much hassle by car and another two off the ST.

The adds, 2 of them, appear every time one tries to log onto to CQN. Bloody annoying given it is also encouraging gambling. I am with Dharma Bam on this one I don’t like it. 26. Good morning bhoys,

A group of us are about to have our first meeting to set up a new Perth Supporters Club with a bus to run to at least all the home games. We have roughly 40 people signed up with hopefully more to fill a larger coach.

We want to start on the right foot and let everyone know what their signing up to before the start of the new season.

So far we have for discussion….

    1. Departure and arrival times to and from game.

    2. Membership fee

    3. Non-attendence

    9. Club nights

    10. Any advantages to being Affiliated

Does anyone have thoughts on any of these issues that we should consider and are there any gaps?

The only experience we have between us is running the odd buckshee bus to some games but not an ongoing venture.

All suggestions would be very welcome.
