Henderson attempts to buck Celtic youth syndrome

624

For as long as you or I can remember, Celtic’s youth teams have had a fearsome reputation, winning countless titles, even with Kenny McDowall as head coach, but something inevitably goes wrong.  Clubs like Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts and even Hamilton Accies have a better record of graduating prospects, despite having a poorer youth team to pick from.

The other fearsome reputation we had, was that Celtic was one of the places young talent came to wither on the vine, before shuffling off to a minor club at around 21-years-old.  Where would you send your boy, Celtic or Dundee United………?

The argument goes that clubs like United have more opportunity to blood young talent than Celtic, who for long periods of the last 20 years were locked in an all-or-nothing battle for supremacy, or the need to reach the Champions League group stage, or the next level of the Champions League.  This theory doesn’t stand up to scrutiny, though, as clubs with higher still demands are able to mature young talent through first team exposure.

The truth is it’s never been a first team priority, as we have been caught in a ‘buy success’ mentality for close to 30 years.

Still only 18, Liam Henderson has as much chance as anyone who have come through the ranks in the last couple of decades of making it as a top player at Celtic, but he needs to be stretched by playing competitive senior football over the next three years, cameo appearances here and there will not provide the platform he needs.  A few months at Rosenborg, who kick off a new league season on Monday, will give him opportunities he’s not going to see at Celtic between now and the end of the season.

Did you see what newco director, Paul Murray, did with his stock market announcement yesterday?

He wrote, “‎I have been informed by Deloitte, the existing auditor, that they informed the previous Board of their intention to resign following the June 2014 audit. The previous Board chose not to announce this nor did they find a replacement for Deloitte. With limited time to have these results reviewed the Board asked Jeffreys Henry to perform the exercise as Independent Reporting Accountants, not auditors.”

On reading this many were inclined to conclude the reason Deloitte did not act as Independent Reporting Accountants for their interims was because they had left the building.  Not so.  Murray later confirmed to a Daily Record financial reporter (not the football guys) that Deloittes are still newco’s auditors.  I am sure there is a perfectly good reason they didn’t sign off the interims.  Maybe they were busy that day.

    Jamesgang, thanks for the reply.

I think Nir has similar qualities that Xavi has, I’m not saying Nir is as good as Xavi, but they make passing the ball look simple, play with their head up, read the game well, keep the ball moving plus each has good football instinct and intelligence.

Our playing better has coincided with Nir getting an overdue run in the team.

Nir scoring a few goals would make him even more popular with some of out support.

That UEFA/ECA deal is good news for Celtic and Scottish football.

Given what Celtic bring to the EL it’s good that they benefit more when that is the UEFA competition they find themselves in.

In a good year it’s CL money then better EL money if we finish third in a CL Group.

  11. Imo, there are 2 reasons for Celtic’s dramatic improvement on the field this season: Ronny Deila and Nir Biton.

To me, Biton is so central to our team’s keeping the ball moving, that I would do what Jock Stein did when Bertie Auld was injured and Charlie Gallagher was the main mhan. Jock substituted Charlie as soon as we were a couple of goals up. I would do the same with Nir, especially now as Liam Henderson is away for the remainder of the season. Charlie Mulgrew is no replacement.

Would any other fans in Britain have thought themselves hard done by for having had to start at the bottom with a new club after everything Glasgow Rangers did?

Geordie, I remember when George broke his ankle against Basel in the European Cup quarter final when we won 4 2 after extra time.

We played a charity game in late 1974 or 1975 for UNICEF against Benfica.

Wee Jimmy was playing also that night and three times George played three terrific passes to the wee man which were perfect for him to run onto. Jinky scored from one of the passes plus forced two good saves from their keeper.

Great player who couldn’t cope with the pressure of being in the spotlight. This was worsened when his two best pals at Celtic, Davie Cattenach and Davie Hay left.

  19. Been on Celtic TV.

Just finished watching highlights of the European Cup semi against Leeds.

George Connelly and Kenneth Wolstenholme (I think).

What struck me was how good Bertie was, how gallus, how hungry, how up for every kick of the ball. Also a great second “disallowed” goal by big George.

Father in law was a taxi driver in Glasgow at the time (black cabs). He went out for the night shift a wee bit earlier than normal that day, more of a single shift (for those in the trade). Anyway, he gets a fare to where a supporters bus is setting off for Leeds. He only gets on the bus himself, travels down and watches the game, before travelling back on the same supporters bus. He unlocked his cab and continued with what remained of his shift.

It took him a week or so to admit to his wife why the takings were really so poor that night he went to Leeds. Up until then he was blaming on the streets being empty since everyone was away for the game or sitting at home biting their nails listening to the radio. (For younger folks – like Sky without the pictures)

    What at a day

Dealing with the usual day to day feck ups by dwp and GCC

Then meet my mate who lost his wife last year, he received a letter from Celtic wishing her a 60th birthday , we laughed about it because he paid and she took the glory.

Then a mate gets shafted by the courts and pension service because someone tried to steal money from his frail mother

And we get over 100 business men and women who steal millions from us law baiting tax payers telling us to stick with the Tory stealing government

How I despair that we don’t have a good socialist in our party

  25. Celtic complaining about pricing of tickets for the semi at Hampden north stand. All for saving a few quid but £23 seems reasonable . Used to paying more every 2nd week to pay more for tickets behind goals in inferior stadia. Pricing seems reasonable for a national semi I would have thought .
