Henderson attempts to buck Celtic youth syndrome

624

For as long as you or I can remember, Celtic’s youth teams have had a fearsome reputation, winning countless titles, even with Kenny McDowall as head coach, but something inevitably goes wrong.  Clubs like Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts and even Hamilton Accies have a better record of graduating prospects, despite having a poorer youth team to pick from.

The other fearsome reputation we had, was that Celtic was one of the places young talent came to wither on the vine, before shuffling off to a minor club at around 21-years-old.  Where would you send your boy, Celtic or Dundee United………?

The argument goes that clubs like United have more opportunity to blood young talent than Celtic, who for long periods of the last 20 years were locked in an all-or-nothing battle for supremacy, or the need to reach the Champions League group stage, or the next level of the Champions League.  This theory doesn’t stand up to scrutiny, though, as clubs with higher still demands are able to mature young talent through first team exposure.

The truth is it’s never been a first team priority, as we have been caught in a ‘buy success’ mentality for close to 30 years.

Still only 18, Liam Henderson has as much chance as anyone who have come through the ranks in the last couple of decades of making it as a top player at Celtic, but he needs to be stretched by playing competitive senior football over the next three years, cameo appearances here and there will not provide the platform he needs.  A few months at Rosenborg, who kick off a new league season on Monday, will give him opportunities he’s not going to see at Celtic between now and the end of the season.

Did you see what newco director, Paul Murray, did with his stock market announcement yesterday?

He wrote, “‎I have been informed by Deloitte, the existing auditor, that they informed the previous Board of their intention to resign following the June 2014 audit. The previous Board chose not to announce this nor did they find a replacement for Deloitte. With limited time to have these results reviewed the Board asked Jeffreys Henry to perform the exercise as Independent Reporting Accountants, not auditors.”

On reading this many were inclined to conclude the reason Deloitte did not act as Independent Reporting Accountants for their interims was because they had left the building.  Not so.  Murray later confirmed to a Daily Record financial reporter (not the football guys) that Deloittes are still newco’s auditors.  I am sure there is a perfectly good reason they didn’t sign off the interims.  Maybe they were busy that day.

    Celtic welcomes ECA Agreement

By: Newsroom Staff on 01 Apr, 2015 16:41

CELTIC Football Club today welcomed the announcement by the European Club Association of a new Memorandum of Understanding with FIFA and UEFA.

Representatives from 145 ECA Member Clubs attended the 14th European Club Association two-day General Assembly in Stockholm, with Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell represented as an Executive Board Member.

In particular, Celtic, who played an important part in negotiations over several months, warmly welcomed the introduction of a new structure which aims to share the revenue growth of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League competitions, more evenly among European clubs.

ECA AND UEFA RENEW MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING UNTIL 2022

At the 14th ECA General Assembly in Stockholm, ECA and UEFA have announced the renewal of their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) until 31 May 2022. The renewed agreement is a testament to the strength of the strategic partnership ECA and UEFA have developed since 2008, with the new memorandum now including, for example, both the 2018-21 UEFA club competition cycle and UEFA EURO 2020. The agreement sets a new benchmark for the relationship between clubs and national associations, providing clubs a greater role in top-level governance and an increased share of funding.

ECA to join the UEFA Executive Committee

The UEFA Congress last week ratified the principle to allow stakeholder representation in the UEFA Executive Committee. As of its next meeting, two ECA Club Representatives will participate in the UEFA Executive Committee, as ‘co-opted’ members. The presence of club representatives as full members with voting rights in the UEFA Executive Committee will be implemented at the next UEFA Congress, pending the necessary statutory changes. This is a major achievement for ECA and a strong statement of UEFA’s commitment to modern and dynamic governance models. Most importantly, it is an unequivocal acknowledgement of clubs’ importance to the European Game.

Increased role for UEFA Club Competitions Committee

The new MoU further increases the role of the UEFA Club Competitions Committee, wielding more meaningful influence on top-level decision-making. The UEFA Club Competitions Committee refers directly to the UEFA Executive Committee and will retain a ‘Referral Right’ on a number of issues affecting clubs or club competitions. It will also be informed and consulted on marketing and financial matters and be composed exclusively of club representatives.

    UEFA EURO 2020 club benefits

For the first time, at the 2020 tournament, the clubs’ financial benefits from UEFA EURO will be calculated as a percentage of the total gross revenue. Clubs will receive 8% of income from broadcast, commercial and ticketing/hospitality, with the minimum set at €200m – a €50m increase on the clubs’ share of UEFA EURO 2016 revenues.

    Club competition distribution concept

ECA and UEFA have together developed a revolutionary distribution mechanism for the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, aimed at sharing the competitions’ revenue growth more evenly among European clubs. A record funding pot of €2.24bn – combining 32% higher UEFA club competition revenues with UEFA finals ticketing and hospitality income – will be divided with a new focus on solidarity. A greater proportion of funds than ever before will go to UEFA Europa League participants, to participants in the qualifying rounds and to clubs in medium/smaller championships. The concept means more funding for all, because the new percentage-based system ensures that every stakeholder will benefit proportionally from the competitions’ continued growth. ECA is proud to have completed this virtuous circle for the good of the European game in collaboration with UEFA. The full details of the new distribution can be viewed here.

Commenting on the renewed MoU, ECA Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “The signing of the second agreement with UEFA in 2012 was an historic moment. It expressed the unity of the ECA and our desire to develop and improve club football, and it established us as a serious partner of UEFA.

“Our third Memorandum of Understanding is the beginning of a new era, a long-term cooperation with UEFA, similar to the one with FIFA. With both governing bodies, we secured in open, fair, but not always easy discussions a stable international match calendar and increased club benefits for the release of players that participate in the EURO and World Cup.

“Furthermore, in the future ECA will not only be directly involved in the shaping of European football through its participation in the UEFA Executive Committee, but also benefit from higher funding. All clubs will benefit from a higher share of the increased Champions League and Europa League revenues for 2015-2018, in particular the Europa League participants.

“I would like to thank the UEFA President Michel Platini for sharing our vision of European club football and facilitating this constructive cooperation. The ECA is still a very young organisation and these achievements are an extraordinary success, which will strengthen the solidarity among the clubs and our sense of responsibility for football.”

UEFA President Michel Platini added: “I am very pleased that we have extended our partnership with the ECA until 2022. I have always believed that UEFA should work together with national associations and clubs in order to find the best ideas and solutions for European Football.

“I look forward to seeing our relationship continue to blossom in the future as we make sure that our collective interests are promoted and protected. I would also like to thank the ECA chairman, Kalle Rummenigge for his efforts throughout the many years of our cooperation. It has been a pleasure to work with him.”

Bitton for me is the player whose importance has increased the most compared to last year (some Wag will cite Gordon and Denayer of course!) but I don’t think it’s cos he’s improved much. I think it’s cos he’s noe getting the chance to show how good he is.

Good post. For Sevco to win the spl next season, they’d have to drop no more than about 20 points over 38 games. Considering 24 points alone would be against us and the sheep, it’s never going to happen outwith Arab investment. Decent talking point but doesn’t relate in any way to events of 65.

There’s been a lot of talk regarding Lennoxtown and whether it benefits the younger players that go there to enhance whatever skills they had in a footballing sense, great for Celtic and us, the supporters, but does it help the young players to go there train for a few hours then home to do whatever they fancy.

Lennoxtown, in my opinion has alienated the players from the supporters, You can go to Celtic Park any day of the week (except match days) and not see a player, entirely different from before Lennoxtown opened for business a few years ago. Ten years ago if you had ventured to Celtic Park you would see a few Celtic players on any given day, got your picture taken with the players and have a chat with them, Now Celtic Park is rather dull for any supporter, whether they are in to buy tickets, or just to have a look around, visiting Celtic Park years ago was a bit of a day out, you got the chance to meet other supporters and the players, Now it’s like a ghost town except when games are on.

I enjoyed going to Celtic Park when I came into Glasgow, there was always a chance of seeing a few players when you were there, I never go into Celtic Park these days except on days that a game is being played.

What a waste of finances Celtic are missing when Lennoxtown opened, they should get their heads together and instead of the players going home in the afternoon they should attend Celtic Park and do photo shoots with the supporters, the supporters will turn up if they knew that a few players would be there every day, they could work a rota system, 4 or 5 players attending every day except match days, the supporters will start coming back to the benefit of the Superstore and food wagon, there was always a food wagon before Lennoxtown, is it still there, or has that gone the same way as the supporters have drifted away, you may even get some new supporters turning up to the games.

If the supporters turn up, Celtic may decide to build a Restaurant & a big Bar to facilitate their thirst after a couple of hours of taking snaps of their favourite players.

Livingston punished for breaking dual interest ownership rules

    HAVE YOUR SAY

LIVINGSTON have been fined and handed a registration ban for breaking SFA dual interest rules.

The Championship outfit were hit with a £5,000 fine and player registration ban by the Scottish FA yesterday after majority shareholder Neil Rankine was found guilty in January of breaching dual interest rules over his involvement with League Two side East Fife.

    Picture: SNS

The governing body has handed Rankine a deadline of May 15 to part with his shares in at least one of the two clubs or face further punishment.

The West Lothian side were fined £10,000 and also had five points deducted in November last year for breaking tax rules.

The SFA sanctions imposed on the Lions also restricts the club from re-signing any of their current players.

The SFA statement read: “The tribunal considered that the imposition of a substantial financial penalty would not be in the best interests of the club or the wider interests of Scottish football.

“The panel did, nonetheless, require to illustrate the gravity of the breaches and imposed a ‘global sanction’ in respect of the four breaches, which arise out of a set of circumstances. The global sanctions are determined in two parts:

“1. Fine of £5000 imposed on Livingston FC.

“2. Livingston FC prevented from registering any player, either on loan or permanently, or extending the contract of any player currently registered with the club until such time as the club has resolved the ongoing breach of Disciplinary Rule 21.

“If the ongoing breach is not resolved it would be a matter for the Compliance Officer to consider raising further proceedings.”

The SFA punishment comes just four days ahead of the Petrofac Training Cup final against fellow Championship strugglers Alloa at McDiarmid Park.

Player/manager Mark Burchill, whose side are five points adrift at the Championship basement, said: “We didn’t expect it but we knew something was happening. But that is for the guys upstairs to deal with.

“For me and players I think it’s water of a duck’s back, we just need to get on with it. There have been so many issues like the points penalty.

“We knew this court case was ongoing, there’s a court case between the former chief executive (Ged Nixon) and the current owner (Neil Rankine) too. We just need to forget about it.”

    Post Split Fixtures

To the split we will have played 17 Home and 16 Away matches, so we will play 2 more home and 3 away fixtures post split.

We are due to play ICT and St Johnstone at home with Aberdeen and Dundee Utd (again) away plus Hamilton away if they stay in top 6.

But Dundee may well pip them and we would be scheduled to play them at home – a home tie would have to be switched in that circumstance.

Of course we then would have to have the sequence of fixtures to be confirmed, I suppose dictated by the gap between us and the Sheep by that time.

What chances of a home match to clinch the title?

What chances of the SFA getting it right – ever ???
