Hibs Armageddon dividend, gift the young will never know

882

Well done to Hibernian fans for turning up in sufficient numbers to increase turnover to £8.0m from £6.9m the previous season, allowing the club to turn a profit in Armageddon season, despite some mediocre performances on the field.  The challenge for chairman Rod Petrie is to ensure the elevated income level results in the club outperforming village clubs, who survive on a fraction of Hibs income.

Hibernian should tower over St Johnstone, Inverness, Ross County and Motherwell in the race for second place.

Debt remains high at £5.5m (if Celtic’s debt was a similar proportion to turnover it would be circa £40m) but with the wages to turnover ratio at 49% there is scope to both bring debt down and get better value for money on the field.

30 friends, family and supporters of the Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust will be leaving Celtic Park on tomorrow afternoon heading to Dingwall where they will start a 400 mile cycle round every Scottish Premiership ground returning to Celtic Park on Sunday 15th September at 3:30pm. Their goal is to raise £100k for Melanoma Action and Support Scotland (MasScot) who are looking to introduce Scotland’s first ever mobile skin cancer screening unit which is bound to save lives given the success rates when diagnosing melanoma in early stages.

You can follow the team @TommyBurnsSCT and on Facebook this week as they begin this amazing fundraising event. Please support the team if you can at MyDonate. Packie Bonner and Frank McGarvey are signed up and Bertie Auld is getting involved in the final day.

You can participate in the last hour of the cycle, from St Mirren to Celtic Park, leaving around 2:30 on the Sunday, by emailing scottmcgarvey@gmail.com.  Scott will get you organised and help with a fundraising page.

Our thoughts to Jock Stein’s surviving family today, 28 years after his death, as another former Celtic manager prepares Scotland for a World Cup qualifier.  Those old enough to remember his time have a gift which the young will never know.

  1. I will try and put it into perspective for younger generations of Celtic fans will think that old timers like myself go overboard when reminiscing about Big Jock.

For Celtic fans of the time, the announcement of Jock’s return was our football ‘Kennedy moment’. We can all remember where we were, what we were doing and who we heard good news from.

More importantly, we all knew deep down that happier days were just around the corner.

When Jock arrived in the Spring of 1965, Celtic’s fans had endured seven years in which the only trophies acquired were the Glasgow and Glasgow Charity Cups, and even the winning of these could require correctly guessing the toss of a coin.

The club, players and fans were a joke.

Under Jock, not only did the club experience its truly golden era but also success on an unprecedented scale.

Within weeks the Scottish Cup was won. A mere twenty five months down the line, another five domestic trophies were won and we were Champions of Europe. A title secured coming from behind against a team who when they scored first, usually went on to win.

The only regret for most of was that fathers, brothers and uncles who had all had their lean times as Celtic fans did not live to enjoy the ultimate success.

Jock was human and not perfect. However, he made life much more enjoyable for many thousands of us.

It seems that the deid club naysayers have finally over-reached themselves; swung a wild hay-maker punch causing them to lose balance -trip over their own feet…finally, stumbling to the big knockout count…

How far are they going to be allowed to take this intimidation?

The problem is not so much finding someone in power with the cojones to stand up for truth and justice, its finding one with backbone and principles who’s also not a member of the craft.

  6. Looking as if the BBC has finally grown a back bone…lets see how long it lasts for.

BMCUWP @ 18.28, Cheers buddy. Spain was great but a very short trip. Well on the way to organising my trip to the Camp Nou.

BTW anyone looking to go there avoiding expe3nsive direct Barcelona flights, I’m going via Alicante and the round trip cost about £150. TET recommended Vueling and I got Alicante Barca return for 82 euros including taxes.

I’ll be looking at the hotel situation for the hootenanny tomorrow and I’ll keep you posted.

I agree entirely with your opinion on Fraser Forster. My opinion is that he is much improved since he came to us but he will never be good enough. It was down to a wee bit of good luck rather than the keeper’s skill that we are still in SL. When the ball hit the crossbar he stood static and if that had went in there was no way back. He’s is reasonably good at shot

stopping when the ball is between one foot and six foot off the ground. On the ground, particularly nearside, he is useless. I would take the cash as he would be very easily replaced. After all the deid yins do it successfully. Klos, Woods and the best, Goram. The Holy Goalie is the only World Class keeper we have had since Ronnie Sompson: And we need to get back to that standard if we want to progress in Europe

  12. Despite my feeble attempts at humour I don’t think Spencey is any kind of superhero, roundhouse kickin’ journalistic ass…………….the reality is he was just saying something very obvious to anyone not in the thrall of hundom.

Scottish journalism still has fundamental questions to answer.

Just on way home from work. What exactly has happened with Jim Spence? ( today I mean). Read somebody , somewhere today pointing out that previous comments similar to JS’s have not generated anything like as much attention- smokescreen for more bad ( ie fabulous) news re the team which plays near St Anthony’s juniors to be revealed?

Club and company were incorporated in 1899.

Incorporation means two or more entities being consolidated in ONE BODY ( from the Latin,Corpus – a body ) so there is only one entity to be liquidated, i.e. no separation is possible.

Am I missing something here? How can that possibly be misinterpreted?

The entity that was rankers died in June 2012 when the CVA failed and liquidation became inevitable.
