Ill-equipped strikers, King ramblings and a league without Celtic

545

A week into preseason Celtic play their first 90 minutes of the campaign tomorrow afternoon away to Linz in Austria. It will be great to see the team play (CelticTV) but tomorrow is all about getting the legs moving without injury. Thereafter expectations will ramp up quickly.

‘News’ that Nadir Ciftci has been told he can find a new club will have shocked you, I know. You and I had many opportunities to watch Nadir at Dundee United, while Ronny Deila considered his purchase. The player’s languid interpretation of the game made him a surprising signing at the time.

Maybe Ronny knows something we don’t? Was the hope. He didn’t. It was a rank bad signing, one of several strikers acquired during Ronny’s tenure who didn’t look like Celtic players on paper and looked even less equipped in hoops.

Ronny, of course, did try to sign Moussa Dembele in January 2016, so it would be wrong to conclude he had a blind spot for strikers, but you will struggle to name some who ‘passed through Parkhead’s gates’ in recent seasons.

I only caught up with Dave King’s ramblings yesterday evening. He fancies Newco to reach 10-in-a-row before Celtic do so. They stand a far better chance if we leave Scottish football.  Remember when Charles Green promised Newco would never compete in the Scottish Premier League, knowing fine well the league were committed to an imminent rebrand?  Not laughing so much now, are you?

Celtic are always looking at this, always working on one or other strategy.

Good to see footie back on the blog – not bothered about any new signings for now – get SA contract sorted first.

Too late mate, wee Nicola just made a statement…

  3. Ciftci caused us problems when he was at Utd, he stood out more than zig or zag :O)

Similar to the Hayes signing, he caused us problems, so we sign him.

  4. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bada Bing, I agree re Stuart and a new contract.

Of our current players in the last year of their contracts , Stuart should have a new contract sorted out first.

His overall performances added to his 17 goals , played a big part in our success last season.

His no hesitation attitude in using his left foot when required is a big plus for me.

  5. Ciftci was allowed to barge about the park when playing against us, one time he chased after Scott Brown for about 50 yards and tackled him from behind, of course no booking, pulls on the hoops and he plays with lead boots on, he should never have been signed for Celtic, dont know what anyone saw in him, hindsight is a wonderful thing and I’m glad that this part of the club has now been altered.

  6. I would love SA to sign a long term contract.

However, if we were offered £5m plus would the board acquiesce? (is that a word?)

  7. Philbhoy

If the negos are not going well, the board would jump at £5m for someone going into their last year of their contract, that however is not his true value

Yep, though that’s the difficulty of signing SPL players, when they play other teams they get more space than when playing for Celtic, they also get away with a more physical approach. It’s a tough one.

  9. I don’t often post but read the blog nearly every day. I have noticed the reduction in numbers posting, I have also looked at the personal abuse and scroll past. I seem to have noticed less amount of discussing events and sharing views and information has changed arguments and a new hectoring tone.

In the days after an Invincible Treble, the tone on this blog is all wrong. Today we had a poster attacking Peter Lawwell for signing players. It is wrong. PL has no say in who is signed and only gets involved in setting Budgets, as with all departments and in agreeing the commercials with the deals. He does not get involved in players targets as he is not qualified. That is the job of the football department. Every Celtic Manager, MON, Strachan, Lenny, Ronny and Brendan have only good things to say about PL and the Board.

Because Celtic are dealing with a hostile press, we conduct our business quietly, we have few friends in the media. In the past we had leaks and this has now ceased. If we can keep it quiet, then we will. I believe the posters on here have little idea of the behind the scenes work that goes on.

Does anyone not believe that when the draw options were announced by Uefa for the qualifying, that Celtic wouldn’t have contacted them and told Uefa of their concerns about Linfield. However, as is often the case Celtic concerns were overlooked.

We are faced with a PSNI which don’t want any Celtic fans and who pushed for the Friday 5pm KO. Celtic have been well and truly screwed. The no tickets have been a choice to avoid trouble and nothing else.

Celtic are a well run club, successful on the park and off, but there is too much bleating and complaining on this blog. I firmly believe some users wish the club ill.

People on here want Celtic to dig up that prick King but it’s clear that he is playing to an “old Firm” agenda. He is desperate to catch on to our coattails and we are best ignoring the dick and don’t get involved in debate’s with them. Griffins also shouldn’t have “bitten”

Celtic Board have demonstrated that they run the club well and are to be admired rather than constant moaning from the sidelines.

We have achieved last year despite a hostile Press and Media a Hostile SPFL and SFA and Rivals trying to provoke us into debates. UEFA are no longer our friends.

I loved the Lisbon 50 events and the way the team played, the results and an invincible treble. The blog was first class that week, I love and trust Brendan and his team and I think the board are doing a good job.

This is some of the best times to be a Celtic fan and we should savour this time, as there are are likely more difficult times in the future, far future I hope

  10. BMCUW, Tommy Gemmell was with his closest friend (the man who delivered his eulogy) when he gave the CQN Q&A you refer to. I have just spoke to him and relayed the nature of your comments.

He is keen to meet you as soon as possible (to say the least). Please email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com and I will arranged to meet with both of you. I was not at the Q&A but he will tell you exactly how Tommy was on the occasion. After which, please do me the courtesy of calling him a liar to his face, or verifying what you were told on the blog.

To suggest that I would be stupid enough to allow CQN and Tommy Gemmell to be used in this manner is ridiculous. Please do contact me to arrange this meeting.

I deleted your post for the threat of violence. It was a clear decision, one which was reported to me and I thought appropriate to act on immediately (I now go weeks without comments being reported).

I have also just spoken to Celtfish and relayed your comments about him. He tells me he has never met nor spoken to you. Please take any issues you have in this respect up with me direct.

  15. To date the transfer movement is underwhelming.

Celtic though do business on the quiet so not to worried.

But previous experience has us rightly cynical.

Hope with Brendan here the team will be our priority.

Anything less and we risk losing our finest coach since Jock.

If Armstrong is not signed then it sends a disastrous message to fans and team about ambition.

Reading between the lines Armstrong will sign a new deal but everything just seems to take so long and so many transfer windows do leave you underwhelmed. Nice to go into one in a position of strength and we are making the right noises about quality over quantity. Its early days yet in the market. Our only problem is the CL qualifiers are early days too.

  17. If Armstrong doesn’t sign it’s because he’s been tapped up by an English team, Celtic will be offering him a great pay rise.

I don’t think him signing or not is a reflection of our ambition.

  18. Why are we still being linked with second-rate left backs when we have the two best Celtic players to play in that position in my lifetime currently at the club? Surely this is a case of clueless bloggers stabbing in the dark and lazy MSM jokers making an echo-chamber of it.

  22. i believe eveyone was happy when brendan took over as manager. what a season we have had. just sit back and let him do his job instead of worrying when he is going to bring players in. in brendan we trust.

in all my 60 years following celtic, regarding transfers nothing changes. the start of every season people get worked up wondering when players will come in.for the first time in so many years i am extremely happy the way things are going,i love the way celtic conduct their affairs.cant wait for the season to start. k.t.f

    He can sign, or go.

    No big deal.

I just dont think he is as good as his agent seems to think.

Lets see him play the same for three seasons in a row, then we might say he is a very good player.

At the start of last season, there were doubts.

To be top class, you have to prove it over a period of time, SA, hasnt done that yet.

  24. bigbhoy on 27th June 2017 3:16 pm – Most sensible post on here in a long time. Like you I don’t post often but read the blog regularly. It has now become a forum for a certain crowd (clique if you like) to carry out their internal bickering and point scoring. Suggestion – take yourselves and your agendas elsewhere and leave the CQN forum for genuine likeminded Celtic fans to discuss Celtic.

I think we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves regarding SA.

The last word I read about it was that both the club and Stuart were pleased with the way talks have progressed.

No big surprise the deal hasn’t been done yet – the players and I daresay club officials have had the shortest close season I can ever remember. About 3 weeks for family holidays and all the rest of it.

Fully expect him to sign a longer, better contract soon. Mind you I have been called naive before.
