Inconsistency costs Celtic cups

1483

This time last year there was far too much talk about trebles on these pages.  Celtic were flying in all three competitions, having established a lead in the league, and were heading for a League Cup semi-final against Falkirk.  Falkirk were beaten but it took a late Anthony Stokes goal to make the game safe for Celtic.  The script was written; a final against Kilmarnock, who always bottled it against Celtic in Glasgow, and a successful run in the Scottish Cup was all that stood between us and the fourth treble in our history.

I’ve lost count of how many such trebles we’ve look forward to.  Football has a way of promising lots but it takes an exceptionally good and consistent team to win both cup competitions, as well as the league.  More often than not, great and dominant teams don’t win the treble.

Celtic are a great and exciting team but they have not been nearly consistent enough to win the treble this season.  We have lost two from eight home games and two from seven away.  Good enough to win the league but not to win two cups.

I watched a bit of St Mirren at home to Ross County before heading to Celtic Park last weekend.  They were far from impressive but no less so than when we beat them by seven goals in the SPL four years ago.  The following week the same team knocked us out of the Scottish Cup.

Sunday is one of the biggest games currently on the roster.  Raise your game, Celtic.

It looks to me that Celtic have sold out all hospitality within the stadium and for the night will hire out that facility paying the owner a cut, I wonder where the seats will be?

“The problem for the huns is that they can’t increase the ticket prices next season if they’re still in the lowest division in the league.

“That’s why they’re so upset about the proposed reconstruction.”

Green has already said there will be a 25% increase on season ticket prices.

He may not know, of course. But maybe Green just doesn’t give a damn as he knows no one will pull him up on it.

According to David Stoker, Livingston ran with a player budget of £400,000 for both of their seasons in the 4th and 3rd divisions, winning consecutive promotions.

Of course, he didn’t need to mitigate the risk of having a rookie manager in charge of the team.

Why else would Chuckles pay out +£8M wages on his lot?

    RANGERS TAX LIABILITIES

    Session: 2012-13

    Date tabled: 14.01.2013

    Primary sponsor: Galloway, George

Sponsors:Campbell, Ronnie Hopkins, Kelvin McGovern, Jim

That this House notes that the owners of the club now playing in the Scottish Third Division called Rangers claim that it is the same club with the same history as the liquidated club also known as Rangers; further notes that 14 million in VAT and PAYE was withheld in the run-up to administration by the previous Rangers; further notes that the club is now cash-rich through a share issue which raised in excess of 20 million; condemns the use of insolvency laws to avoid paying tax owed; and calls on the Government to take steps to reclaim the outstanding monies from Rangers and to bring forward legislative proposals to prevent clubs and companies sidestepping their liabilities through liquidation and then carrying on trading with effectively the same name and in exactly the same business.

It is ticket touting by the club in another form.

And giving tickets to a die hard Sevconian just makes it worse.

The club can’t get all high + mighty about touting when it is virtually doing the same thing itself.

The very pragmatic side of me always said no to Riquelme as he is now ‘past it’. The Liga do Brasil is getting stronger and even keeping their best players now.

I tend to think Riq would make more of an impact in the SPL than the latter stages of CL and I know your thinking is mainly Europe.

GALLOWAY TABLES COMMONS MOTION ON RANGERS DEBT

Posted on Friday, 25th January 2013 by Joe McHugh

George Galloway has called on the government to reclaim the tax debts of Rangers from Sevco.

The Respect MP made an early day motion to parliament on the issue under the title of Rangers Tax Liabilities highlighting how the insolvency laws have been shown to be inadequate.

While much loved names like Woolworths and Northern Rock have disappeared from the high street Charles Green’s newco appear to be benefiting

without addressing any of the tax liabilities.

Galloway’s motion states: “That this House notes that the owners of the club

Division called Rangers claim that it is the same club with the same history as the liquidated club also known as Rangers; further notes that 14 million in VAT and PAYE was withheld in the run-up to administration by the previous Rangers; further notes that the club is now cash-rich through a share issue which raised in excess of 20

insolvency laws to avoid paying tax owed; and calls on the Government to take steps to reclaim the outstanding monies from Rangers and to bring forward legislative proposals

and companies sidestepping their liabilities through liquidation and

    to prevent clubs

then carrying on trading with effectively the same

    business.”

Green apparently was able to buy Murray Park and Ibrox for a knock down £5.5m fee despite recent valuations putting the assets in the region of £80-100m.

Rather than put the assets of the club up for public auction to get the best deal for creditors administrators Duff & Phelps agreed a cut price deal with Green.

At a recent supporters meeting at Ibrox it was claimed that Duff & Phelps had contacted Green about becoming involved at three other football clubs.

    Hope this goes thru. :D

I would assume that stadium sponsorship may help keep the prices down for one more season. They are getting a tad desperate on that score though and I can see the offers tumbling in value. I suspect the shirt sponsorship will be the same.

  20. Watched the Murray – Federer match from first to last. I wouldn’t say it was the best Murray has ever played, his matches in the Olympics v Almagro in QF, Djokovic SF + Federer F was consistently great, but from a match toughness perspective combined with technique it’s his best ever match. A true Grand Slam champion’s performance. His return of serve was reminiscent of Agassi and his 1st serve was brutal.

All is promising much for Sunday.

“With a decent manager the Huns could negotiate the lower leagues with a fraction of the budget TFPLG has”.

Totally agree. Can’t believe how little criticism Fat Sally has had re. the above. Why oh why did he need to bring in all those players on their inflated salaries, just to beat part-time teams more often than the other part-time teams beat each other? Never mind the helping hand from the refs – he started this season with a handful of ‘seasoned’ professionals (Elbows, Wallace) and a fair sprinkling of youth internationals. Why was he unable to beat part timers, and part-time amateurs, with those resources IF he is such a quality coach, having learned sooooooo much from the Loyal Cardigan?

  22. !!Bada Bing!!

So I heard. I believe they are looking at smaller companies as bigger companies don’t want to be associated with a club who have been liquidated. Not exactly good for business, however the Sunday Sun would be a good fit for Sevco.

Andy can really inspire the Scottish nation and it is no coincidence that things are coming together now the evil has been exposed.

I want Celtic to stay in Scotland and win the CL from the SPL. I really think we can do it over the next few years if we keep this progression going.
