Inconsistency costs Celtic cups

1483

This time last year there was far too much talk about trebles on these pages.  Celtic were flying in all three competitions, having established a lead in the league, and were heading for a League Cup semi-final against Falkirk.  Falkirk were beaten but it took a late Anthony Stokes goal to make the game safe for Celtic.  The script was written; a final against Kilmarnock, who always bottled it against Celtic in Glasgow, and a successful run in the Scottish Cup was all that stood between us and the fourth treble in our history.

I’ve lost count of how many such trebles we’ve look forward to.  Football has a way of promising lots but it takes an exceptionally good and consistent team to win both cup competitions, as well as the league.  More often than not, great and dominant teams don’t win the treble.

Celtic are a great and exciting team but they have not been nearly consistent enough to win the treble this season.  We have lost two from eight home games and two from seven away.  Good enough to win the league but not to win two cups.

I watched a bit of St Mirren at home to Ross County before heading to Celtic Park last weekend.  They were far from impressive but no less so than when we beat them by seven goals in the SPL four years ago.  The following week the same team knocked us out of the Scottish Cup.

Sunday is one of the biggest games currently on the roster.  Raise your game, Celtic.

How did Efe’ team get on today, are we getting him back early ?

  2. i feel that celtic’s back. after feeling frustrated at the ‘lack of investment’ (i was wrong) post mon which really has just been finding the proper staff to fit the system (paul 67 talked about it a week or two ago) we have a cl tie which fulfills every celtic fan’s expectations. these ties are the tipping point for us beyond which we forget a multitude of frustrations. as the board refined their operations this millennium, a truth came home to roost for the other’s board. we sailed through their trauma and haven’t muddied our brand, reputation or future. i’ll always remember dd saying throwing money at the club wasn’t ‘the celtic way’ and he needs recognition for his stance. the reward for black sunday and getting through btm and not being bothered by wgs’ flippancy is a tie against juventus. having splurged money on mon and a bit of soul searching in recent years, the fan’s money and board’s direction having given us celtic back and that’s all that matters.

PCs have a small battery, like those flat watch batteries. It may need to be replaced but you will need to open up the box to get at it.

sounds like your comos battery may have expired. Reasonably easy to replace but it will mean getting familiar with your computers inner workings. A comos battery is like a large watch battery and powers the computers internal clock.

If you’re still about, is it the traditional venue for the alternative gazebo this Sunday?

My point was not about goalies taking pens, but, the reasonable assumption that keepers know where the most difficult part of the goal is, with regards to saving them.

The reformed poacher being the best gamekeeper.

  7. Neil, Todays game was a draw. Both games in first round were also drawn, so the 4 teams in the Group had 1 point each, heading into todays game.

Know what I’m finding refreshing at Celtic park, when a player makes a pass that fails to get to his intended target, I’m hearing “nae luck” and “good idea” more than I’m hearing condemnation.

    ‘Juventus the best Italian team’

    Up against the following:

Internationale – 4th in league, just sold Snijder to Turkey, no appetite to sign an replacement.

AC Milan – 6th in league, a bit of a shambles, much like Inter its their worst squad in decades.

The joint two worst Milan squads in decades, probably since the 50s of before?

Napoli – 2nd, some great players but lacking in the resources that Juve have and inconsistent.

Lazio – 3rd, Making a recovery, having a wee renascence season but thats about it, lacking in many areas.

Roma – Inconsistent, wild attacking with no defence management.

    Udinese – 10th

Fiorentina – 5th, very inconsistent and generally poor. 35yo Luca Toni their main man

For Juventus to ‘run away’ with Serie A and be in a 5 point lead is understandable, fair play to them they are doing what we are doing in a weak league.

Their 3-0 win v a disjointed pre/mid crisis chelsea was their one great result this season, they have also drawn with Nordsjælland.

    Bring on Juventus.

I hear you and you make a very good point but the pressure at that stage negates everything IMO.

If it got to that stage and it was Fraser against Gianluigi, my money would be on Fraser.

    corkcelt,

Any score in the other game yet.

I think we are looking for an outright winner in the next game then.

How many from each group go through ?

  17. PFAyr – yep their superiority complex means they will swallow any old rubbish.

Petec – doing fine – hope you are well? Got my ticket for the Juve game at CP. Did consider the trip to Turin but wont give Thomas Crook the money and the chances of getting a ticket over there are close to zilch. Add to that the closure of pubs etc on day of game and whats the point. Will need to wait for the 1/4 finals to get a wee trip :)

I think we could get through but, while we have been excellent in the CL (and we are finally getting better at home in the SPL), I cant help feeling we have had a bit of luck. It might continue but I’m a bit pessimistic by nature (never I hear you say).

Corkcelt – aw c’mon thats not fair! They are too funny to ignore. Okay then I have just completed my Season Ticket holder survey for Celtic. I think its good they are asking us. I said I was generally happy (unbelievable) but that I was waivering on my season ticket renewal because of their lack of support for the GB victimisation. No idea if it would help but at the moment its my single biggest gripe with the Board (there are a few others and I am intrigued with what they will do with the money we have earned this year!).

I also said they need to drop their prices if they want people to maintain their SB’s and if they want to start filling the ground again.

Jackie Mac – I think the reinvention of history that you are suggesting is very dangerous. Celtic have underinvested at times and it did cost us on days like Black Sunday – needless losses. I am still concerned they havent learned and have no ambition. Please dont pretend they are the cleverist in the land simply because we didnt follow the hun off the precipice. Two wrongs dont make a right.

It is time to fill the Stadium again, drop those ST prices dramatically and ramp up the CL tickets if need be.

Get that whole Stadium rocking again because it is amazing not hearing the grunts and the groans as you quite rightly say.

Absolutely spot on ……..we have one of the best Board’s in the Game, and I feel we are all starting to appreciate that fact……….and we also have the best Club / Team / Supporters in the World…..Hail Hail to all things Celtic….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been very busy at work all day and haven’t, therefore, been on CQN for a wee quick look. Just skimmed over some posts a minute ago, alluding to the financial state of the tribute act…….I have always felt that the second half of the season would be the ‘telling’ time for their finances….. Is there some speculation that they are approaching the ‘mire’….go on, make my day someone !!?

  24. TBB –

conflicting reports from Eurochamps67 suggested it was a high noon meet. Are you still on midweek CQN time? In any event it might be nearer 1 before I get there anyway. And despite my best efforts at persuading miniBaldie it looks like I’m the driver.

    I’m doing good thanks,

I’d be more worried if you thought we’d go through. ;) I don’t mean that in a bad way.

You make an excellent point about our home form picking up. Jock was ruthless and wanted every team beaten by HT. It is coming along nicely m8 and the ruthlessness will come soon, hopefully.

A belter from deeyell on SSB there…… Asked if there could be trouble at the upcoming Dundee Utd Sevcongames, Keevins says no. deeyell, as is his wont, agrees then adds I don’t know what the DU fans will do. So there we have it. If there IS trouble it will only come from one set of fans and it won’t be the Huns.
