Inconsistency costs Celtic cups

1483

This time last year there was far too much talk about trebles on these pages.  Celtic were flying in all three competitions, having established a lead in the league, and were heading for a League Cup semi-final against Falkirk.  Falkirk were beaten but it took a late Anthony Stokes goal to make the game safe for Celtic.  The script was written; a final against Kilmarnock, who always bottled it against Celtic in Glasgow, and a successful run in the Scottish Cup was all that stood between us and the fourth treble in our history.

I’ve lost count of how many such trebles we’ve look forward to.  Football has a way of promising lots but it takes an exceptionally good and consistent team to win both cup competitions, as well as the league.  More often than not, great and dominant teams don’t win the treble.

Celtic are a great and exciting team but they have not been nearly consistent enough to win the treble this season.  We have lost two from eight home games and two from seven away.  Good enough to win the league but not to win two cups.

I watched a bit of St Mirren at home to Ross County before heading to Celtic Park last weekend.  They were far from impressive but no less so than when we beat them by seven goals in the SPL four years ago.  The following week the same team knocked us out of the Scottish Cup.

Sunday is one of the biggest games currently on the roster.  Raise your game, Celtic.

  1. Good evening friends and, to anyone who has a similarly routine Monday to Friday job, welcome to the weekend! Woo-hoo!

It was scarey how bad Artur’s penalty was but it somehow went in the top corner. ;))

From a technical viewpoint he needs to brush up a bit.

Hopefully, Nigeria lose another goal and Efe is back soon.

Proof, if needed, that Huns ain’t bright.

I should have said, if Pirlo is playing. ;))

Juventus are a fantastic team and they are very strong physically. Celtic will have to play even better than they did against Barca to get through this tie. I’m confident we will do it as we are progressing as a team and hopefully there won’t be any activity (outwards) over the next week in the transfer market.

I’m delighted that Giorgio C is missing for them as he is rated one of the finest defenders in the World. Georgios might be shifted over to that side if wee Jamesie disnae make it. ;)

  13. Oh how I have laughed today at the stupid sevconians and their cheerleaders in the media.

Ok so you are a sports writer in the Sun. You are going to right a story about Sevco based on a Q&A session mad “chuckles” green has. There are two big things you can talk about. One is a fantasy about building a bigger Ibrox and one is the jaw dropping news that the huns are running at a loss.

    Do you

    a) Investigate the loss – particularly given the recent demise of Rangers and the recent share issue?

    b) Wax lyrical about the latest moonbeam news about a new super stadia being built in around 20 years (even if you know its rubbish)?

And so he goes with b) and throws in a line saying that green admitted they are running at a loss (but dont ask about it).

    Says it all really.

And the best bit. Well the huns have learned nothing and their cheerleaders have learned nothing. This is fab news – they will crash and burn again. And we will have to eat even more jelly and ice cream. Can we start singing the song again??? Please?

If the analogy was brought up on the sevco phone ins tonight, well that would be just sublime. I don’t listen to that tripe apart from when travelling in the car but I’d download the podcast if it was on there. ;))

I hope yer up for the Juve games, do you think we can get past the Best Italian team?

  18. Well, aff oot as KJungle would say. I’m going to a Burns’ Supper tonight. This is the first one I have been to in about 15 years. A bit of a contrast, methinks, the last one was in Paisley in the Abercorn Bowling Club and tonight’s is hosted by a German shop that specialises in Scottish whisky.

So for those of you who like the Bard enjoy your night and the recitals of his fine works and for those of you who don’t – feck the Masonic bassa!

  19. petec,

Artur’s run up was ” deceptive”, however the ball ended up in the same unsaveable part of the net, just like the Zambian goalie’s.

Do you think that perhaps goalkeepers know where to put a penalty where they can’t be saved.

I believe it is impossible to save a penalty placed in the top corner.

    Get practising, Celtic.

  20. Tottenham are currently leading the race to land in-demand Celtic striker Gary Hooper this month, according to TalkSport.

This is TalkSport who said he was going to Norwich…

  21. ….pfayr,

  22. Estadio Nacional on

Was thinking of stadium expansion the other day, does anyone know if the club have had a recent estimate for making the main stand 5 star and in line with the other three sides?

I know the Hampden main stand thing went to around 100m in 1999 but a few years of good CL income and moneyball/porto/lyon asset management could easily pay for that.

A Celtic Hotel could not fail to be an earner and theres a few sites set out for hotels around the park. Where would else would fans travelling decent distances and football tourists want to stay? Celtic Hotel is the obvious answer.

  24. I know I contributed to a fair share of Sevco related debates and no doubt will again in the future. I also know its fun and the fact that Chuckles puts on a daily show means that we always have fresh material to play with, BUT as Estadio said last night this is a CELTIC site. We have a Cup semi on Sunday kicking off a run of 5 important games squeezed into 16 days culminating in a Champions League last 16. The Transfer Window is open some of our players strongly linked to other Clubs, 2 players brought in so far, Club linked with further moves. Surely there is enough going on to support a debate on Celtic issues.

    Pwoud.

I’ve been hearing amazing stories over the last few weeks. I always liked SAF footballing teams, he always tries to play football the right way. The Celtic way, dare I say.

He tried to beat Barca in the CL final playing football unlike Mourinho who will do anything to win.

Celtic, and more specifically, Neil Lennon has IMO, worked out how to beat Barca.

Juventus are a lot more powerful and will not be so easy to read by the time the game comes around. I am sure Neil is relishing the opportunity to try and navigate through another tough tie. Make no mistake if Celtic get past Juve, the odds will come tumbling down.

I think it is reasonable to say………

    2013 – last 16

    2014 – last 8

    2015 – last 4

    2016 last 2

and 2017 we will be out of the EU by then. ;)

We can’t have five star if we introduce standing areas, least that’s what I read on here.

And I doubt we’ll get standing areas till the commonwealth games are done.
