Infectious confidence

127

One of the positions we discussed strengthening during January was that of goalkeeper.  Since the return to action after the winter break, Joe Hart has probably contributed to Celtic picking up more points than at any time during his stay here.  He made memorable saves against Ross County and Hibs and contributed significantly in other games, including Kilmarnock.

Legend has it that busy keepers perform better than idle ones, as their focus keeps them sharp, so Joe could be enjoying time in the zone.  Despite this run of form, Joe has developed a tendency to punch high balls, followed by tens of thousands shouting, “Catch it!” – no undesirable outcome occurred.

Confidence is infections, as is its absence.  Defenders lose it when attackers cut through the midfield.  Keepers need confidence in their defence to be anywhere near their best.  Joe has seen it all and is probably better experienced to deal with our recent issues than a new recruit to the club.

He is also a serial winner who may be on the cusp or retirement.  We need big voices in the dressing room to carry us through the coming months.  It was maybe fortuitous he remains first choice for now.

If there’s a waiting list for season tickets, then why is there tickets available for the Dundee game

    ————-

The capacity of our ground is >60,000. We sell circa 53,000 ST’s . There are tickets to buy for every home game.

Have loved having big Joe at our club. Great guy, great signing, great player. Will be very sad to see him go.

I haven’t seen replacing him as a priority at all, but knew this summer was the right time. I doubt we’ll see an upgrade next season on such a giant figure.

I also query the timing. Maybe it is part of a deflecting narrative for interim results, but it adds to a sense of foreboding that this team has run out of road. Feels sadly similar to the covid season.

Anyway, thanks for the memories Joe.

firstly condolences Burnley 78 to your Wife on the loss of her Mother may she rip regardless of the circumstances this is usually the saddest loss is most peoples life

secondly on the whole most of the comments from both sides of the argument [regarding how we got here and where to next] have been informed and well expressed

what i want to see on Sunday is sleeves rolled up and Celtic spirit shown all is not lost yer

  5. A few years back there was a Charity match, Celtic v Liverpool, organised by Stan Petrov and James Milner. Our place. Martin managed us, and Jurgen Klopp the Reds. Joe Hart was in goal, Artur Boruc for us. Possibly one of the most enjoyable Charity games ever attended, think we won 5-3. At one point we had Paddy McCourt, Henrik Larsonn and Robbie Keane in the Hoops, Ashley Young at full back. In the latter part of the game Big Joe plays outfield and goes all out ot score, headers, half volleys you name it and he would have done so had Artur not still been such a great keeper. Joe versus Artur, not often you would get the chance to see that contest. And both enjoyed every minute of it. As did the crowd.

Great character Big Joe, his overall impact and influence not always appreciated by some on here.Tant Pis. He’ll be missed. Hope he goes out on a high.

    Scott Bain

Very few clubs if any, have 2 number 1 number 1’s, It’s always 1 number 1 and a number 2. The reason for this, is that the number 1 number 1 is always a bit better than the number 2 hence why the number 1 number 1 is numbered 1 and the number 2 number 1 is numbered number 2.

Scot Bain has never been a Celtic number 1 number 1 and gets his contracts on the basis that the evidence is he’ll likely be the number 2 number 1. Similarly very few clubs play their number 2 number 1 in major contests other than because of injury or unavailability of the number 1 number 1.

In Scott Bain’s case he conveniently fulfils this demand of not playing very often in Europe (a major competitionj and being a home based player he conveniently satisfies the UEFA requirement to have so many home players by being unlikely to have to play

    I hope this clarifies matters

  7. Sean Fallon was at a church function when he got talking with the PP there, he told him Jock was looking for another goalie which surprised the Father and he commented that we had oul Ronnie and Joh Fallon so why another, now this was before Ronnie suffered his career ending injury but not much I hasten to add, anyway Sean’s reply was a club like Celtic needed 3 reliable goalies, the Father then told him of a lad at his former parish who was good but was now down south, several months later we signed that goalie.

I know your work is highly informative.

As you know imo r12 i think was doomed as soon as it was long grassed at its first agm.

Dermot does not take any dissent in any of his dealings in the corporate work,

His interview at the Dunhill golf tournament

‘Great club with great traditions’ was pointing out Celtic as a clubs direction of travel.

From that first agm continuation of our business model was prime and somewhere along that line trfc would re-enter the league. That they did in 2016 after serving their new club 3 year european ban,the longer r12 went on the more the pointers proved the long grass had done its job,the nimmo smith consultancy starting with an answer(no title stripping) and obfuscating back is just an example of doing business here.

Nimmo smith was never re looked at, even when HMRC won all its cases and appeals against. Our major shareholder did not want it,and Peter done his bidding until some 8 or 9 years later it was defeated by shareholders 99.5% to 0.5% (approx)

Celtic as a company can barely handle a resolution for a disabled section,Dermot as 44% s/h hasa majority and dint want any corporate linkage to the deidyins, their demise is wholly owned by them,Dermots 44% is a majority as their are 22% share purchased in 95 that have not been updated and serviced so by the rules their vote defaults to the PLC board hence those massive majorities against r12 when it was finally voted on.

I would urge every shareholder to update their shares and default their voting rights to the Celtic Trust, setting up alternate groups only serves Dermots divide and rule strategy.

Make the 5% target and things will start to change.

    =====================

Thats my first post in this discourse with yourself

My view is Dermot did not want it- get it.

Peter does what Dermot tells him-2013

It got deferred, shelved, longrassed whatever you want or dont want to call it,the resolution at agm2013 did not happen/occur in 2013.

If Dermot had found it important to his s/h he would have been in fast like at the Coral agm

Once our agm was over that was it imo but as you point out we learned bout governance

When i say thats it 👇r12 did not happen

It requested that UEFA establish if the licensing cycle process that granted a UEFA Licence to then Rangers FC PLC in 2011 had been applied as UEFA intended by the Scottish Football Association Licensing Committee.

    They wurr deed!

    Further.

No action again by DD(majority s/h)

    When HMRC cases concluded

No titles in Consultamt Nimmo Smith farce

    Treveso letter tap in

    Legality of 5wA

Thing in common is in s/h terms i would suggest DD may have wanted continuation of business for Celtic.as major s/h in that club thats all he needs to look after, worries bout the self harming to an ignaminious death is not his business look out.

As you point out governance and compliance has improved, still not as transparent as i would wish-everybox ticked for fans to see.

AH i am not running any false narrative but use away as a lightning point to inform,

3rd time-I am not,nor never have been a member of Celtic Trust,i speak for myself, you have met them more than me,i outlined the times i have said hello.

    No misunderstanding misrepresntations falsenarratives

Just power getting what it wanted imo

Dermot is that power in CFC.

As I was a member of the Celtic Trust executive committee that decided to decline your proposal I have been dismayed at your continual false narrative around that decision and the individuals who took the decision, this is a personal reply to hopefully provide some balance to the debate on CQN from my own involvement, I hope you accept it in the spirit it is intended

At no point in the meeting I attended was disrespect directly or indirectly shown to yourself or the group of shareholders you represent, no personality of any individual discussed, as for the the small group of shareholders ( a group of people who were anonymous to myself and those in the meeting ) the meeting I attended only considered your proposal solely on its merits, a unanimous decision was reached to decline your proposal for the Celtic trust to get involved, The executive committee then was made up entirely of volunteers who have careers and lives, the Celtic Trust was just an expansion of their passion for Celtic, at that time I was a member it contained strong personalities with professionals drawn from Education, Business, and Trade Unionism it was a broad spectrum, a lot of talent IMO with considerable life experience, to suggest that I or others were misled or easily persuaded is nonsense and far from the truth, I understand your personal viewpoint that this decision is incomprehensible to you, and your strategy was infallible, that is your right, I will not break confidences and the confidentiality of the meeting and disclose any details of the discussion that took place in a public forum, nor name any individuals who don’t visit this public platform thereby denying them the right to reply, I speak for myself only.

To me this wasn’t a binary issue, there are good people on both sides, good Celtic people, I have no ill will toward you or the small group you represent, I have to say not all in the Res12 group of 4 feel about the CT and its people the way you do, a recent wedding guest list tells its own truth, fantastic day out.

Indeed it is my understanding that the Celtic Trust assisted with the initial Res12 procedure and with gaining signatures, when it was eventually voted on at an AGM CT voted for it. I was not opposed to Res12 or you P, if I may suggest time has moved on, and I see no benefit to anyone in regurgitating this debate on the CT and its executive, the meeting I attended never sought to offend or disrespect you or any shareholder.

The Celtic Trust over the past 20 years has fought cases both individually and collectively on behalf of Celtic fans who approached the Trust for help, to accuse them of naval gazing internally without consideration of the wider support is a false narrative the facts do not support, outside of the CT members of the CT have assisted with the successful FAC campaign, and the Call it Out protests, I attended the protests outside St Alphonous protesting against the right of the OO to march past Catholic Churches and assault priests in the 21st century.

The Celtic Trust does not have the power (shares) or the membership numbers to force real change within the Celtic boardroom, nor the impregnable towers of Hampden, limited success achieved by the CT has been at AGMs with resolutions that have the power to embarrass the Celtic board or making strong cases which the club agrees to at the regular meetings with club Secretary, CEO, and Liaison officer has been the best it could achieve, however, it is the only shareholder organisation within the Celtic family, CT also regularly has dialogue with all the other supporter organisations, I am not pretending the CT is perfect far from it, indeed who is ?

It is easy to criticise CT on social media, I have read many contributions from the perspective of If They made me King ! Every day on CQN and in the exploding world of Celtic social media there is discussion and debate around issues involving Celtic, all to frequently there is deep division between opposing viewpoints, and rarely a consensus on how to resolve and move forward, even when the club was in peril of being liquidated the fanbase couldn’t be completely united, in my own considerable experience that is an incontrovertible truth, any individual who thinks they can rally the Celtic support in their thousands or tens of thousands isn’t reading the myriad of rooms

I won’t be responding to any posts in reply, you are free to have the last word, to conclude P I wish you success in your endeavours in SFA reform, it has been for you an all-encompassing passion, the vehicle of the SFSA wouldn’t be my personal choice though as IMO the best interests of Celtic wouldn’t be served, nevertheless bon chance

Big Joe is up there w it has the best GK wce have had top 5 or 6.

It’s no coincidence since sevco got a good keeper they have strung a few results together. A good GK with a good Centre back, spine etc.

Now we know that Joe is retiring wce should have a plan in place to replace with a 10 – 15 million pound keeper no fannying about.

We should and better be identifying players of quality for summer to hit the ground running.

  13. BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 4:11 PM,

Yes, hope you and the better half had a productive trip…

The Marvin Comperr signing is interesting, someone at the 2018 AGM brought up the waste of one mn when we signed him, the then Chairman took the p!$$ and said that was on the Manager.

That tells me we were in a sad state of affairs in 2018, we now know the consequences.

Brendan said we never paid anything like one mn for him.

MC was on Brendan no doubt, he brought him in to do the Kolo Toure role as he thought the defence needed experience.

It was a mistake, a mistake he’ll never be allowed to forget

It will be a sword of damocles over his head, the same way Roy Aitken taking a Rangers throw in will never be forgiven.

As for Mioski, not at all sure…

    a) He was on Celtic’s radar

    b) the answer

Brendan said Idah came accross his desk the last knockings of the transfer window, he knew the lad and thought he was a better player than he’d already shown and was worth a punt on loan.

Says a lot about our recruitment, doesn’t it? A key transfer window, high eight figure sum in the bank and a punt on a Norwich City development player.

So we’ll see how that works out…

    The new Marvin

    The new Pukki

    The new Sutton

    Or just plain aul’ Idah…

Me, I’m rooting for the lad, already got a (cyber) bet on, he’ll be the number one striker in Scotland (outside Celtic of course), by June.

    We’ll see…

  16. Oh and prepare for mr anonymous ( Shankland ) on Saturday also …that’s if he hasn’t joined the “injury list “

  17. The announcement yesterday by Joe Hart was a bit of a surprise to me, although it will be gratefully received no doubt by a number on here and elsewhere on various forums.

There is a connected significance between JH statement yesterday and Brendan’s recent “braver” statement at the end of the transfer window. I said earlier in the week that I felt there was a malaise running through the club at this time – I don’t know what it is, however piecing together the statements from Brendan and Joe with a pitiful drop in performance, inferences can be drawn.

Taking JH first – he said “It takes one thing off the table that can be speculated over. I’m definitely not going to be there next season; I won’t be available to play football. I want to take that off the table and we can talk about why, and then push forward.”

I think this is a clever, not cynical, statement from a seasoned professional who sees the way the wind’s blowing at the moment at Celtic Park. If our downward spiral continues, then it is likely we will have a barren season. Joe has maybe realized that leaving in June could reflect badly on him – i.e. leaving as a loser in a losing team, and not the winner he has been since he came here, so get your excuses in first. I would imagine that he has another position lined up; whether that is in coaching, media, or another club (he’s only 36); perhaps in the EPL as backup, or, the Championship as a first-choice. I am not accusing him of lying, maybe being diplomatic as he “pushes forward”

In Brendan’s case, given his repeated pleas for more quality to be brought in following what turned out to be an underwhelming summer window, January incoming transfers fell significantly short of expectations. He said “ I would go with supporters thinking we could maybe be a little bit braver in terms of bringing in another level of player,” ‘but that’s up to me to try and fix that over the course of my time here. It seems pretty clear that he was disappointed, however he don’t not apportion blame and steered clear of openly criticizing DD, MN and the board.

Here is the Oxford Dictionary’s definition of bravery – “willing to do things that are difficult, dangerous, or painful; not afraid.” Why would spending some substantial sums of money in the transfer market, always assuming that there were suitable players available, be dangerous, or, painful and to be afraid of? We brought in the absolute minimum in quantity terms – Idah as a back-up striker and Khun to replace Abada, who it was obvious, could not play in front of a section of the support who celebrated the slaughter of innocent people at a music festival by Hamas (“victory to the resistance”). There is no way of knowing if there was a knock-on effect on Abada’s colleagues in the dressing-room, with overall morale taking a hit. Prior to October 7 we had lost two league points – since that date, we have lost fourteen – seven times as many (that figure 7 again) – draw your own conclusions.

With the sale of David Turnbull almost balancing the books, it was obvious that Celtic was being extremely careful financially, so – What is the difficulty? – What is the danger? – What is the club we afraid of? The inference must be that there is something painful to be faced and it has been decided that financially discretion is the better part of valour at this moment in time.

The CBC fiasco was due to come to court towards the end of last year, that it hasn’t could mean there is ongoing dialogue on a complete out of court settlement – perhaps the delay in posting the 31 December interims means there are still loose ends to be tied-up. I am sure that Celtic will want whatever the ‘damage’ to be included completely with no contingent liability left over to cloud future results. My belief is that Celtic and not insurance companies will foot the bill for damages in this class action, if I am proved to be wrong I will of course apologise.

So there it is, maybe Celtic’s “lack of bravery” in the transfer market – in ‘tooling-up’ to win the league and all that entails in UEFA CL riches, is down to events in the last century under, what we now know to be, a feckless and incompetent board that nearly put the club out of business – is their legacy now this ‘sting in the tail’?

Regards the cbc stuff, celtic are insured they specifically mentioned the insurer’s solicitor were dealing with it, hence the drawn out process. Even if they were not insured to compensation levels are not going to bust the club ffs.

If the cbc thing was the issue why spent 20 million in the summer, spend 6 million to redeveloping barrowfield and 2 million to improve lennoxtown. You could justifiable say we can’t do it because of possible cost. putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5.

Rodgers wants the club to be braver in the transfer market I.e., gamble same amount on less players of a higher quality. He is pissed off they had signed a bunch of projects who may be good enough in a couple of years. J Hart is gonna be here until end of season and wants folk to know he is fully committed to the team until then without distraction. He is not trying to deflect at all.

The delay in interim results is very obvious, we got the jota and starfelt money and spent that on new players, in the winter we broke even and now our accounts will show significant profit 📈. Problem is the team are playing shite so it’s gonna look awful and it’s gonna be on them. They will have nowhere to hide and cowards don’t like that.

On a side note I see football scotland are talking about scotland losing the automatic champions league spot and the 70 million that goes with it. Why do these folk always talk shite and inflate the value, it’s not even close to that level of money. Celtic have not even made half that this season and we actually won a games and drew a game. It might end up 35 million with the added games and commitments.

If you ask me, the board have done the sums and reckon the difference between c/l group stage and e/l group stages participation is not worth the gamble I.e., they don’t wanna spend an additional 20 million to get what equates to a 10 million return. That’s how a Conservative board operates.

It’s a TV thing, if SKY are doing the game that’s it.

Outwith the TV deal games like the Dundee home game, then Celtic can sell the rights to PPV.
