Injuries, training, Hampden in the rain

576

The return of the winter break to the Scottish football programme is welcome. There are a couple of physiological reasons for this. Players are never truly 100% fit during the season, they always carry knocks and scrapes. Allowing them time away from competitive action will allow minor abrasions to recover with less risk of a more significant injury.

The way a player can train during the season is also limited by impending football games. Endurance training requires lots of stamina-sapping exercise. This is possible in the early weeks of preseason but its’ simply not practical to push players’ endurance limits at the start of the week and expect them to play at the weekend. Even less taxing training is possible when a player has two games a week.

A three week break from games in January will allow training programmes to be implemented which simply would not be possible otherwise. A mid-season foundation layer of fitness can be laid down which will allow legs to appear fresher in subsequent months.  This foundation layer should also prevent injuries.

Can’t believe it’s been 18 years since the League Cup final was played pre-Christmas. I’ve fond memories of the last one – against Dundee United, at Ibrox. The 90s brought us a Scottish Cup win in 1995 but that League Cup win came early in a season we believed we had a genuine title chance for the first time in years.

It felt like, and proved to be, a profound moment.

It was also our first League Cup since 1982 – the Hampden in the rain final, another great memory from a period we were so far out of the picture in Europe domestic competitions were always the ambition.  For those to young to know, the Celtic end at Hampden was like a 90° ash park, with three inch wooden planks standing upright, which some decades earlier held back the ash to create long-gone steps.  Good job we won.

I see Aberdeen’s inspiration, Jonny Hayes, is out for a month. As we know to our cost this season, losing your top players costs points. We’ll see how it affects Aberdeen on Friday.

  1. Brooney has a contract to June 2018, he is going no where, I believe he is being groomed to join the Celtic Coaching Staff. I think Kris & Izzy both have contracts to June 2017 and I have no doubt they will see them out. Derk, Charlie, Blackett, Cole, Stokes,Scepovic,Fisher & Ciftci are probably offski.

Of our lads loaned out I can only see a possible Celtic future for Henderson & Nesbitt & possibly Findlay.

you can keep on banging on about loyalists the Scottish press and whoever else you want to bring in to divert attention it’s a well trodden track in here. However it doesn’t deflect from the fact that the player mentioned has been given ample opportunity in his career to shine but has basically stuck up two fingers to those who knows what’s best for him while he is prepared to accept the guidance of those who have brought his football career to a stuttering halt

Don’t take my word for it but take the word of of someone who has an inkling of what they are talking about

  5. Thank goodness the debate on RITG has widened out again. I have to say. I found myself slightly exasperated last night when no one could make the distinction between my belief that the song is not sectarian and my condoning it.

But in a way that’s my point. The word sectarian is being used by the racist institutions in Scotland to put up a barrier both to debate and to vilify the thing that Scotland hates most namely irishness and Catholicism. The irony that it was mr Knox and to some extent mr orange who helped introduced such institutions and embibed them with that racism should not be lost on anyone. And the fact that some posters think it’s offensive to say it’s good to be a Roman Catholic is indeed proof positive of the power of such institutional racism. We have been taught to think what’s bad and in recent years this is accelerating (much I guess to the chagrin of those who believe it has all gone away). The horror of the OB act is that it’s actually seeking to enshrine such racism in law.

Scotlands institutions are on the offensive against us. The vilification of Celtic supporters has now reached incredible heights and you are seeing first hand the different treatment meted out to the establishment club (the new one now).

Under the barrage of unthinking attacks it requires both fortitude and morale courage to confront it. If individuals confront it Scotland has tacitly condoned attacks on individuals who put their head abovof the parapet by not acting on threats and intimidation from the Hun element.

My anger is of course reserved to the board of Celtic for having neither moral courage nor fortitude nor leadership to confront the attacks. But then again let’s face it, it’s not about the support, it’s not about the cause, it’s not even about the football. It’s just about the money for them.

So here we are in modern Scotland, faced with insitutional racism all around you and some of you remained either unaware of are so cowed by the attempts to subjugate and criminalise you that you are actually participating in it.

    Wake up.

  6. Seems to me that postings to this blog are either those which spring from emotion and those which are based on reason – occasionally we can get a delightful mix of both.

For instance – on the ‘Roamin in the Gloamin’ type ditties – yes of course some will sing these when at the match, or, going to and from – however they would never dream of giving a rendition in the workplace. They get swept up with emotion and say and do things that in everyday life they wouldn’t.

Also on the topic of Peter Lawwell, the board and the financial operation of our club.

If you use solid reasoning there is absolutely no doubt that the club is run in an exemplary manner – however a large minoriity of our support are in their ‘Roamin in the Gloamin’ emotional state when it comes to expressing their opinion of the officials at the club.

Yes we all want success, yes we all want to buy the best players and for them to be instant successes – yes we all want the treble every year and CL qualification – yes we all want everyone connected to the club to hold our particular political and religious views – yes we all want ‘heated driveways’, or their equivalent…….these are emotional wants that sometimes get the better of people – however they are not driven by reason – they are not reasonable!!!!!!

They are a wishlist – a wishlist that if not fulfilled leads some people to utter the most outrageous, unsubstantiated and quite frankly nonsensical opinion which they deliver as fact.

  7. Mickbhoy1888

I’m not banging on about anything, you stated that he was a fool, I paraphrase, I agree if he want’s to succeed as a football in scotland, but it won’t hinder you if you are a footballer who is a loyalist sympathyser, the opposite in fact, that’s was the extent of my banging.

And what about Lenny, the scottish media attempted to destroyed him, for what, being a Catholic from the North who had the audacity to play for Celtic and refused to be beholden to the bigoted scum.

But you carry on peddling the smsm agenda.

No, we don’t all want heated drive ways.

Why does this wonderfully / exemplary run club….

…have a fitba team that plays in front of a less than, half-full Celtic Park.

Who’s wonderful / exemplary policies, chased the fans from their seats ?

Re O’Connell, I’d naturally love to see him make the grade with Celtic but with Erik, Dedryck & Jozo recently recruited, his chances will be limited. The little game time he has had he handled himself well albeit maybe lacking a wee bit of pace. Looking forward to watching him play with Cork City, I will have to up my attendances at Turner’s Cross this season.

So….anyone that questions PL or the financials of the club….then they are of the same mentality of those that sing RITG?

What kind of reasoning is that?

You of course fail to mention, the millions squandered on dud players…Ciftci being the latest.

Kind of glossed over that…didnt you.

  15. The Green Man you were asking the other day about the Magdalene Institute. I believe that they were based where the Lochburn scheme is. I moved to lochburn in 64 and you had an old farm on one side of lochburn road across the road the new lochburn scheme then other side of houses you had the old deaf and dumb home. Basically the scheme was built where the Magdalene institute was.

Im probably going to get stick for this one.

However:)…..Ive been watching Dedryk and Jozo closely….i hate to say it, but im not too impressed.

Dedryk is a good player….but liable to switching off and making bad mistakes…a bit like Efe imo.

Jozo…Again good player….although i doubt he cost 4-5 million….scope for improvement, yes….But he is no VVD, thats for sure.

Erik…Looks a proper defender to me…solid,…..How long can we keep him though?

So, overall, i dont think it would be a bad idea to have a few young, keen, strong centre halfs.
