It’s Easter, forgive

429

I was away from home when Brendan Rodgers left, so absorbed the news in isolation.  I didn’t feel any of the betrayal that others seemed to.  Maybe things would have been different if I was in the middle of things.  Maybe feelings of betrayal are contagious?

For me, feelings towards Celtic heroes leaving goes back to two players: Kenny Dalglish and Charlie Nicholas.  I was 10 when Kenny left and 11 when he came back with Liverpool, and the European Cup, for Jock Stein’s testimonial.  He was booed by some in the home support, which I found incredible.  He was our everything for so long and still a hero to me.

By the time Nicholas left in ’83 I felt differently.  I’d bought a “Charlie Nicholas” scarf and told myself that’s the last time I hold up a player’s name.  Even now when I walk past the vendors outside the ground I think back to that scarf.  It was sore.  Kenny went for the European Cup, Charlie when for the parties and the Tories, and cannot bring himself to speak generously of Celtic.  He is forgiven for leaving but his scarcely disguised resentment toward Celtic means I am finished with him.

As for Brendan, would you or I leave Celtic for a three year contract worth over £15m?  Of course not.  It is fair to say some have rejected fabulous offers to stay at Celtic Park, so maybe we really wouldn’t, but most go, even fans like you and me.

It was clear Brendan was working his ticket since he decided to create disruption in August.  He could have waited until the end of the season, but working with a disruptive influence, who refuses to cooperate in planning decisions, but will not admit why, it not an ideal scenario either.  I was not unhappy to see a clean break.

But for me, he is in the same column as Kenny Dalglish, not that nyaff Nicholas.  He won us an incredible invincible treble, then another treble and another League Cup.  Europe aside, he was magnificent.  There are no comparable candidates because few have his sheer presence.

He is part of our history, and when we hopefully look back on 10-in-a-row, you will want to remember all of it with a smile.  It’s Easter, forgive.

I wonder if the Hibs Manager will do as their counterpart on the other side of the City did today and let us win tomorrow, Nah I doubt it, we’ll have to fight for every point until the League is won.

*As I said yesterday we shouldnae be surprised, this is the 7th game on a trot that they’ve lost tae sevco.

I’ve mentioned this before but back during the 3 day week we had Sunday games, we were playing on the Saturday through at Easter Road but I was slated tae work that day, with 2 young weans couldnae afford no tae.

The electricity went off usually around mid afternoon so we started work early that day, as I was working in Dumbarton at the time once it went off a mate suggested going tae Boagheid, they were playing the calvinists,

Aye ok and we picked up a wee kerry oot in the town centre and wandered round tae the ground.

It was a dreich day and we were in the ould cooshed, one notable moment for me was spotting a member of the lol complete with Dumbarton scarf and tammy, this was what we would call a dob who was never without deidco colours, like many of their support they were drifting away as we headed for the honest niar and a possible double.

At the end of the game as I was heading to the exit I bumped intae a bluenose I knew, one of the really decent ones, actually bought a house off him previous tae this, “good result for you at Easter Road Tontine” he said, so I asked what the score, he said 4-2.

Absolutely delighted as prior to the game we were only 3 points ahead of the Hibbees (2 points a win then), so this was crucial. An astonishing crowd of almost 50,000 was on hand compared tae 5,000 at Boagheid or 15,000 the following day at hades for a game against the high flying arabs. As usual Dixie was the hammer of the Hibs once again.

With a wee bounce in my step I wandered intae the lavvy, a few john knox supporters were already there, one of them said tae his mate, how did the animals get on the day in that lilting fairy accent they have. They had won 1-0 so I went tae tell them it was a good day for them as their local rivals had got walloped 4-2 at home.

His mate with his face tripping him replied won 4-2, I couldnae believe it, they hated us that much that they would rather the much despised local rivals would beat us. Being a young mouthy nutter at the time I offered, “naw the animals are playing the morra”, referencing the game at hades.

Just at that I felt my collar being grabbed and I was being escorted out, it was my bluenose mate saying wrang place wee man that mob are looking right ugly.

So today they had the chance of going a point ahead of the Hibs and staying there with a Celtic victory tomorrow and consolidating it with a win at Easter Road next Sunday, naw nae chance would they ever do us a favour. Hope we really thump them on May 25, revenge for 1956 and another Bob Kelly eff up.

Oh forgot tae mention after a hard fought game in Basle midweek we beat the calvinists more comfortably the following Saturday than the 1-0 score suggests, Dixie again, while the Hibbees thumped deidco 3-1 tae keep them in the hunt for the title, widnae put it past that mob tae lie down tae them.

We actually won the niar League by only 4 points over Hibs tieing our last 4 games. The smsm actually encouraged the League to change the system to avoid further Celtic dominance which resulted in the emergence of the new Premier league in August 1975.

Levein has never won anything as a player or a manager, an easy cup run to Hampden, he will move back upstairs in the summer, a loser.

He’ll be more of a loss to Sevco than to Hearts , if he does leave the dugout.
