It’s Easter, forgive

429

I was away from home when Brendan Rodgers left, so absorbed the news in isolation.  I didn’t feel any of the betrayal that others seemed to.  Maybe things would have been different if I was in the middle of things.  Maybe feelings of betrayal are contagious?

For me, feelings towards Celtic heroes leaving goes back to two players: Kenny Dalglish and Charlie Nicholas.  I was 10 when Kenny left and 11 when he came back with Liverpool, and the European Cup, for Jock Stein’s testimonial.  He was booed by some in the home support, which I found incredible.  He was our everything for so long and still a hero to me.

By the time Nicholas left in ’83 I felt differently.  I’d bought a “Charlie Nicholas” scarf and told myself that’s the last time I hold up a player’s name.  Even now when I walk past the vendors outside the ground I think back to that scarf.  It was sore.  Kenny went for the European Cup, Charlie when for the parties and the Tories, and cannot bring himself to speak generously of Celtic.  He is forgiven for leaving but his scarcely disguised resentment toward Celtic means I am finished with him.

As for Brendan, would you or I leave Celtic for a three year contract worth over £15m?  Of course not.  It is fair to say some have rejected fabulous offers to stay at Celtic Park, so maybe we really wouldn’t, but most go, even fans like you and me.

It was clear Brendan was working his ticket since he decided to create disruption in August.  He could have waited until the end of the season, but working with a disruptive influence, who refuses to cooperate in planning decisions, but will not admit why, it not an ideal scenario either.  I was not unhappy to see a clean break.

But for me, he is in the same column as Kenny Dalglish, not that nyaff Nicholas.  He won us an incredible invincible treble, then another treble and another League Cup.  Europe aside, he was magnificent.  There are no comparable candidates because few have his sheer presence.

He is part of our history, and when we hopefully look back on 10-in-a-row, you will want to remember all of it with a smile.  It’s Easter, forgive.

  1. Delaney’s Dunky from earlier: Jeez, Garry, that’s a tough one. I always have to admire those on here who write so eloquently and passionately about the passing of their loved ones, especially their Mothers and Fathers. Be thankful and blessed that you had such a good relationship with Molly that the pain of missing her is hurting so much at this moment. Same for Eileen. Take care of yourself and your family. You know how to get through this.

  5. Big shout out to the Celtic fan, who texted off the ball;

“Rangers fans need to let go of this Killie ticket allocation thing. Let Kilmarnock celebrate their 150 year anniversary. In 143 years they can celebrate theirs”

All good here, my first Saturday off this year so wee yin had me up the street at 11am at the pound shop.. better off at work :-)

Loving our Neil in charge, quite content with the board checking out every single option available for the next manager but would be delighted if the the interim mandate keeps the position … older, wiser but still the same unrepentant fenian who has lived through more than us :-)

“If” we win the morra hope you and your Da have a cracking day next week “if” we win the league .. glad yir Da keeps you in your place when it comes to the hoops :-)

  14. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

St Stivs , the Maryhill bus depot at the west end of Maryhill Road was bordered by Lennox and Celtic streets .

Jack Aitchison scored for Alloa against Thistle with former Celt , Scott McDonald , getting Thistle’s winner.

  15. Dallas 9.19pm

I thought young Jack had been recalled, obviously not when I heard he opened the scoring … was hoping for a Partick Th win for the CQN coupon (who cares about winning as long as your team wins :-) ex-Celt Jim Goodwin is doing some job with Alloa and speaks very well on the transistor radio … another product from the Celtic conveyor belt … admittedly only made one appearance for the first team

Gftb-good stuff mate, truth be told I wouldn’t get a season ticket for next year, that’s my dads shout

Never forget it. I was 18 and went through with mates, few pints in friendly Hibs pub.

Everybody had long hair on that huge terracing. The class of Dalglish and the striker”s intinct of Dixie made it easy.

    A memory to cherish.

  18. Fairhill Bhoy 9.40pm

Exactly, God forbid the day he isn’t ordering you to get to the ticket office for the season ticket/book/card :-)

  19. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Gerry, i think Jack is on a developement loan where he can still play for Alloa and our reserves.

I was hoping he woud have had progressed to the occasional place on our bench over the past year but unfortunately not possibly due to the form of our other forwards.

  20. Fairhill Bhoy 9.51pm

Good stuff … log him on CQN and am sure he would have an opinion or two but he probably thinks the internet is full of rockets ? (which might not be far from the truth :-)

Is Neil Lennon a yes from you ? Or do you fancy a “bigger” name

  21. Dallas 9.54pm

Not sure how fit Jack has been, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a few more youngsters out with a team like Alloa with Jim Goodwin in charge … am a great believer in younger players playing in games that mean something and not just running over teams of the same age group

  22. Garry, mate that is shocking news…sincere condolences to you and your extended family on the losses of your Mother and Aunt, may they Rest in Peace

Roccobhoy…best wishes for continued improving health

  23. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Gerry , I would like to see as many home grown players in our team as possible but its very unlikely to happen. The early to mid eighties was the last time we would have 5 or 6 home grown players as regular starters , Danny McGrain , Mark Reid , Roy Aitken , Tommy Burns , Paul McStay, George McCluskey , Peter Grant and some guy who went to Arsenal.

  24. Dallas 10.19pm

I will never doubt your knowledge history wise but surely in the here and now

Tierney, Callum, Jamesy, first 3 on teamsheet if fit, with a back up of Ralston, Mikey J & Euan Henderson is good going in the modern game considering how differing squad sizes are these days

Your feelings towards the Prosecco Poncer make me smile :-) not many get under your skin so I sort of admire Charlie Nickerless (that was our bad mouthing of the cannonbaw :-)
