January strategy and short-term cover

1488

I know what you’re thinking, let’s hope we get more exciting January signings like Pawel Brozek, Rabiu Ibrahim and Freddie Ljungberg.

It’s slightly unfair to mock our January transfer business. Kris Commons arrived two years ago and constituted a one man title challenge for a few months (and still delights).  Georgios Samaras and Barry Robson arrived in 2008 and went a long way to ensuring the title came to Celtic.  We went signing crazy in January (and 1st Feb) 2010 when Robbie Keane, Diomansy Kamara and soon-to-be World Cup final legend…. Edson Braafheid arrived.  Robbie proved his class but it was all in vain, alas.

Most of our worries seem to be focussed on protecting those already in the squad.  I’m not too concerned one way or another for the Juventus tie, which will take care of itself, but decisions made today will need to consider the Champions League qualifier challenges we will face in August.  If we sell Gary Hooper today there is no guarantee we will be able to recruit his replacement until the final gasp of the August window.

So far this month we have addressed long-term strategy and short-term cover, if we do any more business I’d be happy with more of the same.

Contrary to career expectations 29-year-old Edson Braafheid is not now a delivery driver for Argos but he’s not playing a lot of football these days either.

If the server overheats later I’m on Twitter, @CQN, and I’ll do my best to figure out Facebook, CQN Magazine, too.

  2. And another thing, there is something truly ridiculous (and wrong) that a club who don’t even get 20,000 fans at home games (loftus road only holds around 18,000) can pay £100,000 in wages (to a defender no less!).

  6. i would be amazed if we don’t sign a goalkeeper today. Amazed. Nobody major – no big names, but I can’t imagine us being stupid enough to go from now on with only zaluska as cover for the big man.

  8. I'm Neil Lennon (tamrabam) on

Exactly what job is Paul Lambert being asked to do at Villa? Relegate them?

MON saved sunderlands skin last season and kept them in the EPL. That was probably worth about 50 million quid to the Mackems.

If MON keeps them up for another season it will be worth another 50 million quid of free sky money to Sunderland,

The sell on value of 5 million quid striker Danny Graham is really quite insignificant when compared to the money that Sunderland have made/will make for staying in the EPL a season or two longer

If you ever met a McKinsey consultant …ask to borrow your watch so they can tell you the time …you will get the idea? Even the best (sic) image makers canny make a silk purse from a pig’s ear.(apologies to any Celts working for that wonderful institution ;-)

Remember Jimbo singing the Celtic Song with Gerry McNee behind the bar in Mickey Joe’s one night back in the 80’s ….they were a tv double act back then …like Morecambe & Wise but without the gags

McNee was winding Jimbo up saying he was a currant and Jimbo denying it so he challenged Jimbo sing the Celtic song ….Jimbo reluctantly agreed if ‘Everyone joined in …’ only Jimbo messed up spectacularly and sang “Hail, Hail the Tims are here….”

McNee dug him right up there and then…cue total verbal pelters for jimbo all night and all good natured stuff. I remember thinking at the time what would have happened to a Celt journo in the Loudon in similar circumstances… ‘we are Sevco super Sev….aaaayaaabassa’

At least we know and understand our history.

As opposed to Klan F.C. who are absolutely confused because they think they have a history, but in reality they don’t, their state of denial is absolute, and what little understanding they ever had was obliterated a long time ago.

  12. I think that the SPL/SFA will both know that the zombies will be kaput if they don’t get in with the money next season and the authorities will do there up most to help them again, hence the all of a sudden clamour for reconstruction. the devil will be in the details i think they may get an invite and the clubs who are struggling ie killie will vote yes this time and boom they will be back or bust.

  13. TBB,

For me the question of “payment” will be resolved in identical means (although perhaps not with the same outcome) as it was in the FTTT. The real question is; did the “arranagements” put the funds paid into sub-trust/pension at the unilateral control of the persons in respect of whose eventual benefit the funds were paid into trust? If you catch my drift! The question of when the “benefit” became taxable will differ depending on the mechanism of placing the funds at the player’s eventual disposal (or not), but it is this question of whether the payments, or any part of them, paid into trust were at the player’s disposal, which will resolve the “payment” side of the complaint against oldco.

If you read D1.13 you will see that Thornhill will probably try and narrow the definition of “contract of service” to only require demonstration of “payments” as well, although in my view that is a weaker argument than the one that no “payments” were actually made in terms of the “EBT arrangements”.

Something worth bearing in mind is that RFC Newco has stated that the five players in respect of whom a residual tax liability remains post FTTT all recievd payroll payments through EBT by error. They say that the payroll payments were all disclosed to SPL. Now, this inter-changeability between payroll and EBT is discussed elsewhere in the FTTT and strongly suggests that the “EBT arrangements” were in reality not discretionary at all, but in these specific circumstances it is also worth considering whether the payments into EBT/subEBT were gross or net of tax, and how this married up with the declaration to SPL. Given that oldco have conceded that liability remains in respect of these arrangements, one must assume the payments were made net of tax. IE, Player x was entitled to a payroll payment of £100k, net of tax he gest £50k and gets it through EBT by mistake. However, there are examples of personnel (not players) asking Oldco to switch erstwhile bonus entitlement through EBT, and oldco acquiescing. Therefore there remains suspicion that somethign similar could have happened with players too.

  16. tamrabam.

He is being asked to run the club sustainably and tryn and finish 17th. AV had huge losses under MON, despite him keeping them in the Premiership.

There are other clubs, of smaller historical size than AV, who manage to turn a profit from all that SKY money you talk about(West Brom, Fulham, Stoke). The difference being they have not obliterated their finances in years past leaving them with massive interest repayments. There’s a good argument that if Villa go down, it will be as much the board’s fault for indulging MON in chasing Champions League (tilting at windmills?) for years as it will be Lambert’s for not managing to turn sand into gold.
