January strategy and short-term cover

1488

I know what you’re thinking, let’s hope we get more exciting January signings like Pawel Brozek, Rabiu Ibrahim and Freddie Ljungberg.

It’s slightly unfair to mock our January transfer business. Kris Commons arrived two years ago and constituted a one man title challenge for a few months (and still delights).  Georgios Samaras and Barry Robson arrived in 2008 and went a long way to ensuring the title came to Celtic.  We went signing crazy in January (and 1st Feb) 2010 when Robbie Keane, Diomansy Kamara and soon-to-be World Cup final legend…. Edson Braafheid arrived.  Robbie proved his class but it was all in vain, alas.

Most of our worries seem to be focussed on protecting those already in the squad.  I’m not too concerned one way or another for the Juventus tie, which will take care of itself, but decisions made today will need to consider the Champions League qualifier challenges we will face in August.  If we sell Gary Hooper today there is no guarantee we will be able to recruit his replacement until the final gasp of the August window.

So far this month we have addressed long-term strategy and short-term cover, if we do any more business I’d be happy with more of the same.

Contrary to career expectations 29-year-old Edson Braafheid is not now a delivery driver for Argos but he’s not playing a lot of football these days either.

If the server overheats later I’m on Twitter, @CQN, and I’ll do my best to figure out Facebook, CQN Magazine, too.

The ebt arrangements in cumulo were found not to be taxable in principle by the FTTT, so the Tribunal, by majority, was convinced that they weren’t “payments”.

The side letter don’t necessarily prmoise payments to players. They undertake the funding of sub-trusts. Whether LNS considers that to be a “payment” is very much up for grabs; it is not as cut and dried as you say. With the FTTT having already determinedd that the side letters plus evidence of payments into sub-trusts, and evidence of commensurate loans to players, doesn’t amount to “payments” having been made, there will be a rebuttable presumption (in my view) that there have been no “payments” amde to players above and beyond their contracted payments disclosed in the League Registration forms. What is more up for grabs is the question of whether the side letter obligation to fund sub-trusts is an obligation whcih ought to be disclosed to the league under Rule D1.13.

What’s also worth bearing in mind is that the implications of failure to disclose all contractual entitlements, and the failure to disclose all “payments”, varies according to the time-frame. Post 2005 is when disclosure of all “payments” impacted on the vality of a player’s registration. Ergo, Titles in 2009, 10 and 11 are more up for grabs (again in my opinon) than those in 2003 and 2005.

My own view is that oldco took a deliberate and calculated risk with the legitimacy of their player registrations to help with an agressive tax avoidance strategy. Hell mend them if they got either the tax rules, or the league registration rules, wrong. They were playing with fire.

  4. Gary Cotterill, getting paid to be in Milan to report on…well nothing much surprisingly, oh, wait, the exclusive story of………. an already signed player training with his new club! SHOCKER! The reporting on cheeky Mario is almost as sycophantic as good ol’ Jose.

  5. Graham to Sunderland; does Martin O’Neill ever but a player with any consideration given to sell on value?

Is he ever part of a manegement set up that doesn’t run with ruinous deficits?

He is a very astute tactical manager, and a fantastic motivator. He is also a great team builder and a very charismatic man, but I’m not sure he pays much attention to a club’s long term stability after he leaves. He would never agree to carry out the job lambert has been asked to do at Villa, in my opinion.

  6. Mathews has signed an extension already. No one will leave in my opinion and JR wont sign either as he wont get a game, Had dad flu all night, Good to see Hoops back to winning ways and The Two Tonys back was very pleasing. Stokes never been away.

I saw big Fraser Foster in the business class lounges, passed through every lounge shaking hands. and snaps taken.

I would imagine it would be hard to get your photo taken with big Fraser,if you do a head&shoulders shot you would have to stand a fair bit back if you want to get both heads in the picture.

Good stuff, thanks. I left a reply to your earlier post on the previous page to the effect that the tax status of the payments is perhaps of less relevance.

Question: Suppose the contributions detailed in the side letters were made to the players’ Pension Funds rather than the offshore trust malarkey.

Clearly there would be no tax liability on the contributions at the point when the contributions were made. Any tax liability would only be triggered when the pension benefits from the fund are received much later in time.

Thus, the issue of ‘payment’ needs to be viewed from the perspective of entitlement and benefit as regards the contribitions, not the timing of the tax point.

  10. Lets hope Mario B can find a bit of peace and form in Italy, I doubt it. he is everything that is wrong with alot of modern footballers, too much too soon and lose their appetite. But no doubt the english media will keep us up to date with every little thing he does.

“Last night, we got a £29m offer for Hooper, from an unknown agent, from an unknown club, from another universe.”

  16. QPR are quite a bizarre club. Felt sorry for Neil Warnock last year when he got the sack (similar to what happened to Nigel Adkins).

He was quoted as saying in an interview, “it was a committed group of players with a desire and hunger that fired the club into the premier league. The coaching staff had worked equally as hard and had a vision that we could hold our own and in year one just concentrate on staying in the division. In the years to follow we would build all areas of the club slowly but surely to become an established premier league club. Unfortunately the owner didn’t find me or my players fashionable enough and now the club has basically just become a collection of mercenaries trying to make as much money out of the club before they move on to the next one. I’d like to be able to say I wish them well but I don’t.”

QPR and their owner Fernandez = all that is wrong with English football, really hope they go down
