Jar to the senses

568

It was such a jar to the senses.  Twice a striker was clean through on the keeper inside the box.  For 12 months, this only led to one outcome.  Last night we saw Joe Hart make two saves we have not seen since his former England squad team mate was in goal.

Playing out from the back, as we do, takes nerves and practice.  The key players are the goalkeeper, the central defenders and the two deepest central mids.  The latter two need to be comfortable controlling a pass facing their own goal with an opponent on their shoulder.  Callum McGregor and David Tunbull have this.

You can expect a few bumps on the road; McGregor’s nightmare back pass being an example, but we will improve as the season progresses.  Developing this attribute will inevitably cost goals, but you see the speed and effectiveness of the transition into attack.  Gone are the days of circulating the ball endlessly in a horseshoe pattern, or worse, the long ball.

I also liked our new player, Tom Rogic – another who has the ability to bring the ball under instant control with an opponent (or two, as it often was last night) breathing down on him.  Kenny Dalglish would use his body to keep an opponent from getting a toe on the ball, Tom brought it all back last night.  For me, this is an unexpected sunset performance.  Tom is a throwback, without an engine for the modern game, so these treats will remain a cameo.

How are you feeling about the direction of travel?

Last night’s starting 11 had three new signings, eight players who were here last season, seven of whom are Scottish.  Three signings and, of course, a manager we traveled the world to bring to Glasgow!  There are certainly no guarantees against AZ, but the recovery has been swift and impressive.  You are not going to hear this from too many sources, but the fundamentals at the club remain very good; watch how we grow.

It’s another money making exercise for the corrupts who run European football.

They are obviously not stealing enough.

  2. Two reasons to play well & try our best if we end up in Conference.

    Pride & money,

The difference in win bonuses & money for Group placings is surprisingly small.

Based on winning more games at Conference level we are quite likely to make more money there than in the Europa.

We can’t afford to turn our noses up at that.

Obviously like all Celtic Supporters I want us to beat AZ & get into Europa but if we don’t, I’m happy to have the safety net of the Conference.

Plus money from sponsors, must be millions every year. (I’m guessing)

    …………….

I would think so, some people on here are quick to talk about lack of money/ funding at the club. I think more likely the board are worried about further restrictions due to covid etc. and so are playing it safe, a bit to safe

No excuse of not getting a few more players, likely clubs will lower value of players as transfer window gets closer as they have also taken a hit these past 18 months.

  4. lets all do the huddle on

the board will be thinking about how much money they need to keep in the bank in order to earn their bonuses and wage rises

  5. I do get those who say that the title is all important, they are correct! However I would guess that if we fielded under-strength teams in the Conference, if that is where we’re to be this season, it would certainly reach the attention of UEFA. What would their reaction be to a club apparently disrespecting their brand new competition?

    Dunfermline quick quiz.

Memory escapes me, but I’m sure once upon a time they were managed by a ‘Govan boy’ who was happy to be ‘coming home’ on the final game of the season. I think his team (not the one he managed) won 6-0 and clinched the league.

    Is this an accurate recollection?

    Bonus question:

Was it true that a Celtic player received a ban for accusing them of ‘lying down’?

  8. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Which Scottish bank funded Sir David Murray?

Who was Chairman of that bank?

Did he have an association with Dunfermline?

What happened to the bank he Chaired?

Which bank ultimately pulled the plug on Rangers?

  9. I’m at a wee bit of a loss here, the European Conference is beneath us but beating Counterfeit Rangers to a title is the bee knees!!

I remember when on occasion Martin O’Neil’s Wycombe Wanderers won the FA Trophy, great day for the town, proud day for Martin.

    We are where we are;

At the beginning of the European qualifiers there were four possibilities…

    UCL

    UEL

    E-CONFERENCE

    Out of Europe

    Two Remain

    UEL

    E-CONFERENCE

We are at the UEL play-off stage. If we are too good for the European Conference then we won’t be playing in it.

  11. Regards the difference in Uefa distributions between the Europa and the Conference Leagues, here’s the official document detailing the payments to be made to clubs from both tournaments

    https://editorial.uefa.com/resources/0269-125fde34ba54-30a4c9aeea13-1000/20210520_circular_2021_35_en.pdf

Using those numbers and using at what I think are reasonable guesses at our performance of

Europa League, 2 wins 2 draws, a second place finish, going out at the first knockout round and with the Huns also in the tournament

    and

Conference, 2 wins, 2 draws, a second place finish and going out at the last 8 with just us in the competition (no Huns)

Theres no difference to speak of in terms of the cash we’d receive between the two competitions – both lead to payouts of roughly €11.5m

There would be a difference in other forms of income, but if we were two go deep as they say in the conference theres no reason we couldn’t make as much, even more from Uefa

I do not grudge Charlie and his boys a penny.

There’s always a price to pay for doing the Devil’s work, as the Scottish establishment (and tax payer) is currently finding out.

Shouldn’t be an issue. Some of the bigger clubs have been doing it in the UEFA Cup/Europa League for years.

I’d be very surprised if Tottenham or Roma put full-strength teams out.

    Majestic – fair point.

I assumed it was a point of procedure and Police Scotland (?) did not deliberately screw up.

If Police Scotland deliberately screwed up to knowing evidence would be inadmissible, that’s another matter.
