Jockeying for FTT already done

735

Following RangersTaxCase’s information that Rangers-HMRC First Tier Tribunal report was in the hands of both parties’ solicitors on Friday, I subsequently heard the report runs to in excess of 300 pages.  It will be published by the court authorities in due course but I don’t expect anything this week.  Any attempt to spin or release excerpts from the report could be considered contempt so it is likely that we will hear nothing formally until then.

Once the report goes live you can expect an already-prepared summary with plenty of focus on what the FTT denied HMRC.  HMRC will not achieve a clean sweep, some matters were dealt with correctly, but there will be no surprises on these pages for the thrust of the findings.

I’m looking forward to an entertaining and final dose of bombast from one of the parties, hopefully in keeping with some of the all-time favourites from March 2000, “Rangers are moving on to another level from the rest of Scottish football”, “the Glasgow giants are setting an agenda that no other Scottish club can match”.

That famous article in The Herald asserts “The Ibrox chairman [Sir David Murray] has spent several months and many sleepless nights piecing together the plans which will eliminate Rangers”.

It does, of course, insert the word “debt” into the end of that sentence but sometimes fewer words paint a more accurate picture.  While we’re on a related subject, well done to Sports Direct FC for reaching the summit of the Third Division on goal difference.  That manager’s definitely worth keeping. Ashley’s money is being wisely spent.

  2. Son of Gabriel on

Was a bit ahead in early morning tasks so thought I’d sort out a few old print outs of drawings or parts of DBI’s so I’m binning what I wont need again and can find the stuff I do need faster.

Forget the DBI’s. I never realised how much CQN I have in and around my desk.

Tax case stuff, BRT+H articles, couple of Paul67’s with one or two choice cuts from others.

Pretty much anything I’ve handed to miserable zombies to make my argument for me.

  3. 13 wins/draws and 15 defeats v Spanish opposition? Approx. 50% success rate getting something, personally I would accept getting 1 point from 6 in the next 2 games.

Re the Trump documentary, as a golfer all I can say is that I am ashamed of Salmond and his lackeys for dropping their trousers and allowing this bully anywhere near our shores. The desicration of the land and treatment of the residents is shocking.

Since football began teams have been dismissed from competitions regarding problems with the registering of players, the SFA over its history has caseloads by the thousands of cup/league game protests, yet the Sevco fans are declaring the SPL have no right to remove titles due to players being improperly registered, complete denial, will the SPL have the cojones to claim money obtained by ole Rankers for winning titles by cheating?

  18. I was thinking that the bookies would not be, at all, surprised to see Barca turning over a 3rd or 4th seed opponent by anything from 3:0 to 7:1.

It is a wee bit re-assuring, therefore, to look at their home CL results over the past 5 seasons at group stage:-

2011/12- 2:0 and 4:0 vs Vic. Pizen and BATE

2010/11= 2:0 and 2:0 vs Copenhagen abd Kazan (but 5:1 vs Panathanaikos)

2009/10-2:0 vs Kiev but lost 1:2 to Kazan

2008/9- 3:1 vs Sporting, 1:1 vs Basel, and 2:3 Donetsk

2007/8- 2:0 and 3:1 vs rangers and Stuttgart (3:0 vs Lyon)

They only scored more than 3 on one occasion (against a 2nd seed). In the same period they scored 5, on three occasions, in CL away ties against the same opposition.

Therefore, on past evidence, maybe we should only expect them to score their standard 2 goals and then play keep-ball.

The fly in the ointment is whether that wee bassa Messi wants to score a hat-trick to dedicate to his new wean.

  20. How could der orkenkind possibly have traded out of administration? Using the £30m-£18m debt reduction in two years is utterly laughable. Utterly. And it insults our intelligence.

The Big Tax Bill (let’s not call it a case, that was but an appeal, it was a bill plain and simple) was for a total, apparently, of around £75m. Now, given that HMRC were down for a good £19m more than that and the overall debt was £60m more than that £75m, one might be forgiven for thinking that bringing down a £60m debt with no Champions League income may just have been a tad beyond them.

But don’t simply take my word on it, let’s look at the figures:

In the two years where their ‘cost-cutting’ kicked in, Rangers reduced their debt by £12m.

In those two years, Rangers played Champions League football in front of 255,000 punters. As well as the gate receipts from those ties, Rangers also received €36m from Uefa.

They made a ‘profit’ of around £2m on players sales during those two seasons.

They ‘won’ the SPL twice, gaining two amounts of at least the difference between 2nd and 1st place prize money, possibly between 4th/5th/6th?? and 1st place. Another £1m+?

Arguably, Rangers made gains they would otherwise have been unable to make, of around £41-£45m.

And they reduced their debt by £12m. Which is to say that during those two years they ran, using inherent income, at a loss of around £15m a year (inherent as in: that which is permanent, or could annually and actually be counted on).

Going back to the ‘no Big Tax Bill’ scenario mooted by fools: HMRC were still due around £19m from a total debt of about £60m (if you include Ticketus), i.e. had HMRC pushed for admin as they did in February, a CVA would still not have been agreed to. Which brings us nicely back to either liquidation for der orkenkind or a laughable attempt to trade their way out of £60m debt, £19m of which would be due immediately (or else admin and liquidation follow).

So, no big tax bill scenarion: this season, der orkenkind would have had a working income, all else being equal (and still no European football – no accounts see?), of around £40m, £19m of which would be due to Hector. And another £4m of which would also be due to Hector (VAT on this year’s tickets). So, around £23m of that £40m is gone, as Tommy Cooper once would have said: Just Like That!

Still, the debt would be down to ‘only’ £41m, £27m of it due to the conductor on the Ticketbus, around £7m of which would be due from the current season’s tranche of ticket sales.

So really the debt is down to very manageable levels; manageable, that is, if you are in the Champions League group stages and even then, only just. Debt is actually down to around £33-34m.

What’s that? Running costs you say? Why, they’d have a full £10m to play around with to cover those. Oh, the payroll is almost double that figure.

No matter, just get a loan from the bank. Or mortgage some Season Tickets.

Or liquidate. Which was always going to happen.
