Just. Change. Nothing.

756

Can we all just agree to change nothing?  I know it was a dead rubber and I know it’s different playing against a 10 man defence, but honestly, just, change, nothing.

We had a defender at the right side of defence, not a frustrated winger.  That subtly rebalanced the team; Kristoffer Ajer (22) was not 20 yards further upfield to connect to a Mohamed Elyounoussi pass, but he was back to provide cover and balance to the two to his left.

Christopher Jullien and Shane Duffy had their most assured game together – although Shane, you were never winning that ball, you should have shown the player down the line instead of committing to the foul.  It was a mistake that would have been sore on another day.

David Turnbull (21) got one goal, one assist and got the assist for the penalty.  That is an incredible return for a player who has been sitting in the stand or out through illness all season.

After a couple of substitute appearances in 11 months at the club, Ismaila Soro (22) made his starting debut and was even more influential than Turnbull to the flow of Celtic’s play.  The deep lying central midfield player has several jobs: protect the defence, intercept opposition moves, get the ball forward quickly and accurately.  A lot of off the ball work is also required; the best in the business are in position to stop moves before an interception is required.  Ismaila did all of this very well.

Like Soro, the lack of opportunities afforded to Patryk Klimala (22) made me think he was less effective than our other strikers have been recently.  Apparently not.  Patryk is all about movement.  He can take a ball, bring others into play and – effectively last night – win corner kicks.  At no time did he try to beat three players on his own, take note, Odsonne.

After THAT pass at Tynecastle in 2019 you may have wondered what happened to Ewan Henderson (20).  The player had a lost 18 months but, like the rest of the midfield last night, he was on his game.  He was tidy and intelligent in possession.  Use him.

The biggest compliment to the midfield and defence is that Conor Hazard (22) had little to do.  Blameless at either goal, he got a foot to a dangerous ball, handled and distributed well throughout.

I don’t know who deserved the win more, the players, the manager or you and me, no doubt someone has been busy running a poll on the subject…..  Onto Sunday!

Celtic: Fifty Flags Plus One, an anthology of how Celtic won each of their league titles, is available now.  Starting with our first title in 1893, it details how Willie Maley brought consistent glory, then the sparse successes over four decades before Jock Stein arrived in 1965 and the more contemporary wins since.

It will rekindle memories you had forgotten and give insight into how the leagues were won.

We have no power to do it right now. Build something. Put money where mouths are. The CST is at least a ready made vehicle to build on. I think that is the pony to back, the wheel we don’t need to reinvent but perhaps need to put some new design into. I’ve put my few shillings in and would encourage others to do likewise. You watch what happens if there is decent momentum there. The powers that be will start to feel the pressure.

Absolutely. Get the numbers, adjust the approach from one that will take a while to bear fruit to one where the buying power of numbers gives more immediate leverage and we are cooking with gas.

Hi there Auldheid. Been a while since we exchanged views but I always keep an eye out for your posts.

Remember a long time ago I talked about the club issuing memberships etc?? Well, this reminded me of that but also made me realise, we don’t need the club to issue anything. Here is a rough model for it. Buy up shares, band together under one umbrella so to speak. Make them take notice of an organised, serious band of supporters. The realisation of jow long a journey can be makes it hard for some people to even start out on it. So the journey has to be a prospect in and of itself. I think it could be. If that makes sense.

  2. Our two best performances were against Lille, a team who beat AC Milan and are doing well in the French League. Sparta Prague scored 10 goals in six games, but only two against the two teams who qualified from our group. Year on year, our overall performance in the EL shows a marked decline as does our efforts in both the League Cup, and the SPL. No getting away from it. Where we go from here is anybody’s guess, but there was evidence on show last night that we have enough ability, on the pitch, to play well against a good side. Which begs the question, why not against St Johnstone or against a Ross County themselves on a terrible run. The answer my friends to that question is not to be found in the boardroom, as Auldheid keeps pointing out they have other questions to answer, no, it is to be found in the incohesive coaching team presently in charge of the team. Given that our major shareholder is not about to throw them to the wind it is upon them to apply themselves to the job in hand, which is getting the best out of the players available, game by game, and in doing so get a consistent run of results, failing which they can look forward to a long period of unemployment.

  4. Celtic. Last Sunday I was livid and somewhat hopeless. I took some action on it. Then I watched the game on Thursday and I’m back in love with it.

Friday night feelings maybe and I’ve said it many times on here, but that piece of ground, that club that plies its trade from ot, that collective we call the support that is built on it – my people and your people built it and are enshrined in it. It is as close to a part of our DNA as anything biological. Win, lose or draw, success or failure, lawwell, dermot Desmond or the Kelly’s and whytes – it is us and always has been, always will be. The Disney version is theirs, the reality is ours. We will win. We will own it because we are it. But we have to work at it.

It’s not about taking on the major shareholders, e.g. Dermot Desmond and Lindsell Train, that would be unrealistic, certainly in the short to medium term. Rather, the idea is to promote membership with the aim of gaining numbers to increase influence with the club from a supporter perspective. And with an add-on benefit of buying shares in the Trust’s own right as well as the potential proxying of shares from members who wish to do so. It is not a universal panacea, but every journey…etc.

Hope you and ladies are keeping well and staying safe.

  6. Must say I’m really pissed off about ghuys saying the ten is gone.

    It’s fecking not gone,

We have 24 games to play, the Huns 22 and there are 3 Derby games included.

In my mind we are 7 points behind.

Up to yesterday we were playing shite & there is no doubt if we continued on that vein, we would not win the League.

However if we play like we did yesterday from now to end of League I am certain we will win the League.

The winning of the League is still in our hands so less of the ten is gone, please.

  7. I notice Auldheid’s estimation on who is a “player” in current Celtic set-up. Despite this season’s form, it is difficult to see how a class act like Edouard does not fall into this category.

    ====================

I do and the same eureka moment hit me the other day when I posted thoughts on the future of other day and repeated them here the other night.

It was para 5 that the light bulb went off. I sent the thoughts to David Lowe on 4 December and mentioned I had at the Zoom meeting. They have been busy so no response so far.

The Future of the CST. Thoughts.

The following are some thoughts for CST to consider to help make Celtic more accountable to their support based on experience of pursuing Resolution 12.

    1. Suggest CST change name from CST to the Registered Name: Celtic Supporters’ Society Limited Company Number: IP29147R so that it is clear CST is open to supporters and shareholders alike.

    2. Give supporters without shares a reason to join more than buying shares to enable CST to speak for them . Make use of technology and harness social media to identify representational issues, seeks views and act on them after gaining consensus.

    3. Revisit the CST Constitution to see if it needs changing to reflect what in effect would be a re branding and whatever aims , objectives and roles the rebranded organisation take on.

    4. Expand the new organisation to cover many thousands of Celtic supporters, ST Holders, Celtic TV subscribers, etc to give them added authority when raising issues with The Board.

    5. Give each member a membership card with a membership number.

    6. Be prepared to use the financial investment supporters make in Celtic to challenge what is in the Company’s interest where resistance is being met by The Board with no good reason.

    7. Make the Celtic Board more accountable and transparent as a result.

    8. Use subscriptions to fund share purchases, set up legal cost fund (you need lawyers to argue your case with Celtic/SPFL/SFA Lawyers) and pay someone to administer /manage the expanded membership.

    9. Reshape web site to capture emerging issues, keep track of them and keep membership up to date on issues

    10. Invite contributions from Celtic supporters that align with organisations aims for publishing on the web site.

    11. Allow for a much expanded AGM and look at how it might be set up, perhaps using same technology as the Open Meeting on Zoom.

    12. Encourage volunteers with specific expertise to join sub committees to cover separate issues where particular knowledge is needed.

    13. Set agendas and invite Celtic to attend rather than be invited to meetings in small groups and encourage two way dialogue with Celtic as a prerequisite for restoring trust.

    14. Disabuse The Celtic Board of any notion the Celtic support are not capable of rational engagement.

    Res 12 Lessons.

    1. Much bigger support baseline needed.

    2. Celtic use the lack of such to ignore pursuing issues

    3. Legal fund absolute necessary to establish shareholder rights and Director responsibilities and challenge legal reasons used to obstruct progress.

    4. Media are under Celtic’s thumb, many journalists briefed on Res12 evidence, none followed up because it is not in their interests, so a respected presence on Social Media required to get any message out.

    5. Make a connection between business issues being pursued and results on the park so that there is a greater understanding of the importance of having a Board that is accountable as symptoms of poor business practice manifest themselves on the field of play.

    6. A lot of hard work involved but easier if spread over a larger organisation with a wider resource base to call on..

I notice Auldheid’s estimation on who is a “player” in current Celtic set-up. Despite this season’s form, it is difficult to see how a class act like Edouard does not fall into this category.

    =============

Fair comment but I was thinking more of guys I’d seen before they became costly players.

Eddy is a “player” but not right now. His touch has gone backwards but on his game he comes under the category of when the ball reaches him you expect something good to happen.

  10. Auldheid – all of that. Will revisit tomorrow in the cold light of day. A good deal of it rings bells with this trade unionist in the way disempowered individuals with collective interests need to organise themselves to get a hearing from those with their hands in the levers of power.

Small aside: I’m not mad keen on lawyers (they are often wrong but in very learned and expensive language in my experience of them!!!) but I get the need for their involvement.

  11. Just watched highlights of the Lille game…

    Delighted for Neil Lennon.

Delighted for the players, especially the newer bhoys trying to stake a claim for selection.

Cal Mac would be a great captain when Broony finally finishes, top pro, top player.

Turnbull and Soro will be amongst the first names on the team sheet for Killie.

Happy bhoy here, are we seeing the first shoots of recovery to our stuttering season?

Trying to dodge the sun today at an adventure park after getting too much sun out in a boat fishing yesterday. Away to source some factor duffle coat…:)

  12. Watching Sneaky Pete on Amazon, Season 1 Epsd 7 about 10-15 in big guy in his office owns Irish pub right behind him Glasgow Celtic Football Club 1888, flag on wall couldn’t believe it and Irish flag next to it.

Really hits you… brilliant. Not a bad show but now nbr 1🍻👍

  13. Let’s all hope NL doesn’t revert to type. These young players must start. If they tire they can be substituted. They are the future so give them all the opportunities. I know PL will want the “want aways” to be in the shop window but this should be resisted. They’ve had their chances. Get most of them out in January. But make sure the young boys are properly coached and for that I’d bring in a very successful coach for defense especially. They need to focus on defending as a unit. The midfield players need to learn to win the midfield battle against Hearts and rangers especially. And everyone needs to learn how to beat a packed defence as will be the case in majority of SPFL games. Does that require new coaches? I’m not sure. So far it hasn’t worked out. It’s really a pity we lost Duff (highly successful) and replaced him with GS (no success as far as I can see). Players need to feel coaching is worthwihle that it improves them. I’m excited and optimistic.

  14. Neil Francis Lennon will pick the team he thinks will get him a win. All the rest of the crap is bollocks.
