Juve let heart rule the head

430

Were you impressed by how smartly Juventus opened last night, pressing Barcelona into conceding a corner?  It was an ambitious opening.  In the days after we beat Barcelona in 2012 one journalist took all sorts of abuse online for recoiling against the suggestion Celtic put on a ‘brave’ performance.

He conceded Celtic’s was a brilliant performance, but defending your 18 yard line was more sensible than brave.  What Juventus did last night, pressing Barcelona, leaving space at the back, was brave.  It was foolish too.

Juventus are a remarkable team and have just completed one of the best seasons in their history.  They had a right to think they could have a go at Barcelona.  They came close too, for a while after they equalised Barca were penned back, but the game turned when Lionel Messi found 50 yards of space ahead of him.  You can’t leave Messi with that sort of freedom.

Three minutes into the game Juventus fans would have been encouraged, they had already forced Barca back and made an attempt at goal but the cost of all this expansionism was space in their own box.  Even this great Juventus team should have gone into yesterday’s game knowing their limitations.

If they played within them, were they good enough to sneak a win against Barcelona?  Quite possibly.

never heard of “watery Willies”. Where was it? Do you remember Frank Haffey swinging on the crossbar? What a character. I still vividly recall my teacher, the one and only Miss Brogan, in St Michael’s (when we moved to the new school in Springfield Road) telling us to sing Hail Glorious St Patrick as we sung it in Church not as THEY sung it over there (nodding to Celtic Park).

I must say it is with more than a tinge of sadness that I see that Colin Jackson of the deid team has passed away.

Only 68.Awful.I was standing in a pub in Clydebank a good few years ago when he came in.

Was very surprised at that as the pub was mobbed with Tims.

As it happened,he stood beside me and I told him I was at the game when he netted his greatest ever goal.

He obviously thought I was Hun and asked which goal it was.

“The wan when ye headed past the Girvan lighthoose to give us the league..”;-)

The never to be forgotten 4-2 win wae 10 men and here was the man who handed it to us.

I have to say he was brilliant about it.

    Rest in peace Bomber.

  9. “Aiden didny play there again under WGS ”

Board puppets or not Board Puppets, as declared by our correspondent from the world of the tabloids, no other manager has played Aiden through the congested middle.

WGS, Valery Karpin, Robert Martinez and MON (both at club and international level) have preferred to offer him the wider, more open spaces of the wings, within which to work his magic. Playing that position earned him a £10m transfer and 76 international caps.

We all saw a good performance from Aiden in that LC final but maybe, just maybe, those highly paid professional dunces, (WGS, Karpin, Martinez and MON) know a wee bit about what works best in the long run.

Did I ever tell you that I saw Tommy Gemmell being a very effective centre half for Celtic but that eejit Stein kept picking him at left back.

As you went up the School, did you have Miss Brogan or Mrs McMillan? In my day, they took the 2 classes of Primary 6 & 7. Did you go to the old school beside the original Forge? Did you go too to Elba Lane? It’s still there, behind the “new” school, although I presume the buildings have been updated.

  24. I recall Colin Jackson primarily for his ‘jostling’ of, Joe Craig to the ground in the Rangers penalty box on 7th January 1978….which led to the crowd trouble at the Celtic end for the rest of a game that….to this day…still causes a bad feeling.

Colin Jackson wasn’t to blame for that days events….not in the slightest. To cut him some slack with the benefit of hindsight….it was an attempt at playing Joe Craig that went wrong…that was all.

Some folk celebrate Colin’s goal in the 4-2 game as, the goal that gave Celtic the title and, deprived Rangers of their 3rd treble in 4 years….good for them.

Would these same folk have held Johnny Doyle(RIP) in contempt of that league title had, Celtic failed to overturn that game….?

    Whatever…..

    Colin Jackson RIP.
