Kano, Rest in Peace

2068

It is enormously sad news that our friend Kano, Martin Kane, succumbed to his illness this morning.  Kano was an ever-present on CQN for four years, on occasion writing our match reports, until illness struck in 2008.  He was left completely paralysed, eventually only able to communicate through a machine, requiring round the clock care.

He was isolated in hospital in his home city of Perth, Western Australia, lonely for him and difficult for his wife Carolyn and their family, with no realistic chance of recovery.  On hearing this news, CQN reacted in an incredible way.  Our also now-departed friend, Pablophanque, wrote, “We need to get this guy home”, and a campaign started to raise the tens of thousands of pounds required to transform part of his home into an appropriate care facility.

As the campaign got underway I remember being concerned, it was going to take at least £60k and I thought we had no chance of getting close to this.  Pablo (memorably) didn’t want to head the campaign he started but others soon stepped in and the Bring Martin Home got underway in earnest.  Those behind it moved heaven and earth, and within a few months, the money was in place and Kano was back living at home with his family.

The Kano Foundation, a remarkable self-funded organisation which takes kids groups and charities to Celtic games, was established by those running the Bring Martin Home campaign, to harness the expertise and goodwill for on-going good, in Martin’s name.

When I first met Kano’s dad, Matt, who himself is no longer with us, six years ago, I was caught off-guard when he talked about Kano’s life expectancy.  Unable to move he was enormously vulnerable to any prosaic infection.  He suffered a few health scares but fought through them for far longer than many anticipated.

We got him back on the blog briefly, sharing some of his gratitude for the work done and his humour, but he explained the hours it took to compose his few sentences.  He continued to watch Celtic, of course.

This morning our thoughts go to Carolyn and the kids, as well as to his good pal Ramie and those who cared for Martin.  Those who decided to get off their arses and change the world for one family back in 2008 should be very proud of what they did, and the years at home they gave Kano.

  1. Without CL income Celtic need to cut their cloth considerably.

They have been doing this ever since a form of Rangers has not been represented in the SPL.

    This cost cutting will continue.

Samaras, Ledley , Hooper are now out of Celtics budget.

Our offer to Commons will most likely be further proof of this trend.

I expect Matthews to be out the door within the next year.

A decision was made to keep Scott Brown but we can’t afford too many more on his wage .

There is no other explanation for Commons not getting a regular game,

He is by far our best outfield player.

I expect Anthony Stokes to be unloved in the next year aswell.

The standard of player in our first eleven and our management staff are going to do mean that we will do very well to win the SPFL.

If not intelligent then at least we can say Charles has been a very clever man.

He managed to keep his foot out of his mouth long enough to create & plant these dormant

bombs as clearly he was of the mind from the off that all things down Govan way were destined

    to the basket.

He was correct on that score even if it would now appear today that he has now ultimately assisted the Azure lemmings over the cliff.

When he came on the scene he simply rode the existing wave of impending doom and has

since then helped it on it’s way.

He has / had no interest whatsoever in TRFC bar the revenue streams & contractual

tie ins he could create during his tenure and then extrude during his brief spell at the pointy end of the rusty crate.

Indeed it is obvious that Normandie was always beckoning and he would leg it as the onerous

elements of his legacy were clearly designed for others to detonate.

Boom has now happened , its gone orf .. by the way!

Yes Charlie , you have been a naughty boy in your self designed brief spell down Greyskull

way and I cannot help but admire the purity in your design to lay landmines at such a speedy rate before you dissapeared behind the arass.

You have left M.A, Numerous Bears , Sharks , Kings ,American Haulage chaps and potentially others ,( what is the collective noun for Phoenix Suns ?) needlessly pumping or wishing to pump many Wonga into Schrodinger cat in the futile hope that there is more life than death in this entity but hey .. to no avail.

None of these far flung “people” have any interest whatsoever in Scottish football.

If it were a Christmas Turkey they are all plying for the best cuts and happy to leave the wishbone for the foolish onlookers.

It’s not looking too good if you go down to the Govan way today.

    Anyroads. To Football.

Old firm duel is a bit touch and go now 8′-( I guess with this latest situation but I suspect if they can get 11 on the field to play the Mighty Alloa this weekend they should all feel mission accomplished.

Result is a different matter based on league draws and foobarred out of the cup.8-)

    Thanks

We could swap wee Shaun’s stats and never make up for the time he spends on the treatment table, even now in the twilight of his career. Kris Commons we are told daily has one foot out the door. – Why on earth we’d want Shaun Maloney? if the above is true. Commons scored 32 goals last season Maloney managed 3. (If you’re into assists, he managed 2 )

I don’t even rate SM when he’s fit, and certainly don’t now that ‘Wigan’ are offloading.

Celtic fans are far too forgiving and still see a cheeky wee player coming on at Ibrox, but there was too much disappointment before and after his second parting from Paradise.

There’s much criticism deserved and otherwise over Celtic’s transfer dealings in the modern era. But whilst we have hit’s and misses Maloney in the revolving door, would be a downsizing too far.

    I don’t think we’re that naive.

STV report on today’s match mentions that Scott Brown was replaced by Aleksandar Tonev ‘who is suspended for seven matches in Scotland for racially abusing Shay Logan’

And here was me thinking his name was just plain old Aleksandar Tonev.

  9. m6bhoy-agree ,we need guys out the door, but i fear we will be playing the ole Russian Roulette on the last day of the Summer Window. The lack of forward planning for CLQ’s,has been negligent IMO.HH

Oh,you were ding so well with that concise post.

    Till the last sentence.

Personally,I doubt Shaun will be back in this window. As Wigan have already kb’d seven-figure offers for him.

Possibly the first time I’ve ever supported PL’s parsimony.

  15. Sipsini @ 15:15

Not the most ideal idea ,but you can’t please everybody all of the time, but may I suggest that the way of dealing with the problem is that Celtic forthwith apply to join The League of Ireland

In that way we appease a large percentage of the support by

Joining another league to get out of Scotland

Probably guaranteeing 10 in a row and many more thereafter

Most likely that we would be guaranteed qualification for European participation every season

Not being dictated kick off times by the Murdoch empire

Knowing that even if a referee has been a season ticket holder at Dundalk or wherever he is most likely to have somone in his family following the hoops and therefore treat us more favourably

Less of a logistical problem for our Irish support in travelling to away games

More or less guaranteed 3pm kick offs on a Saturday at Celtic Park

We would be in an environment where everbody would love us and appreciate our songbook

The Gardai would be less likely to enforce the OB act at our away matches

On reaching a cup final we would be able to belt out the national anthem with gusto

    And Finally

We would never have to play them ever again unless we met them in Europe which is unlikely going by their recent shannanigans

  16. bournesouprecipe,

I would much rather we kept Kris than go after Sean. I would not ever see him replacing Kris and I do hope KC re-signs with us as he has a lot to offer, 32 goals vs 3 a very glaring stat, is a no brainer for sure

  17. 15 minutes to go in the Saturday games and the ole CQN Coupon only needs 3 goals for a rare win. So come on Bolton, Norwich and Inverness. And keep it tight at the back Man City, Burton, Newport who currently are 1 up. Bristol City look safe, winning 3-0.

  18. Did Charlie Nick really say there “they all look the same to me” ref Fernandinhos goal.

We’ll you can replace naïve with a word of your choice, or erase the last sentence in your mind’s eye. ( • )( • )

There are always clubs that’ll buy and pray a player stays fit, especially in England.

We have too much experience in this field with Shaun Maloney, and laterally with Mikel Lustig, and the hapless Derk Boeriggter.

It’s a large part of the reason that this season RD only got one signing and the rest on loan.

  21. Good afternoon all.

Apols for being reported missing yesterday. I read Pauls header, tried to post, but my tears kept welling up in my eyes. The whole day was a downer for me as Martin was a giant of a character and a wonderful mhan.

    RIP Martin Kane.

My sincere condolences to Caroline and the kids and anyone affected by his passing.

Still on a downer today, I got a call from my good friend BMCUW. That cheered me up no end as he normally does. He’s better therapy than a psychae……….phsycoli……shrink. Cheers Mick. :-))
