Newco have cut Celtic’s ticket allocation at Ibrox from 7,000 to 800 tickets per game next season. I understand their thinking. There have been four games between the clubs at Ibrox, Celtic winning each: the first, coming from behind, the second, free-wheeling by a couple of goals, the third – scoring five, and the fourth – twice coming from behind, then winning with 10 men.
It is a litany of humiliation, played out while 7,000 have a party in a stadium, the rest of which is near-empty well before full time. Can you imagine having to sit through this, season after season? Of course they want to reduce our headcount and garner whatever competitive advantage possible.
There are problems. League rules state a “reasonable number of visiting supporters” must be admitted. This number should be agreed in advance with the visiting club, or else the SPFL board will adjudicate.
Then there is the small matter of the Ibrox safety certificate, which Dave King previously said depended on Celtic fans being given the Broomloan Stand. The police insist each set of fans have distinct and separate approaches to stadiums at high-risk games.
Celtic will be happy to reduce the number of Newco fans they have to accommodate – it should shelve talk of having to put prison-grade toilet facilities in areas they visit. Each away team will suffer a competitive disadvantage, but making visits to Ibrox trickier will do our European preparations no harm.
Whatever the police and SPFL say, Dave King has more to worry about.
He still has to get £11m out of South Africa and into a UK bank account.
He needs to satisfy the Takeover Panel before he can start a share issue.
He needs to satisfy the Court of Session over his failure to comply with Takeover Panel instructions.
He needs to satisfy loans due by 1 July (Oh you thought they were all going to be converted to shares, did you? Wait for this one).
He needs to fund a trading shortfall for next season.
He needs to find enough cash to keep the management team on-side before the transfer window closes.
And he needs to convince Uefa they satisfy Financial Fair Play regulations. Straightforward if you have lots of cash, don’t need to use it to buy-out other shareholders at 20p/share, repay loans or fund a football team.
There is simply too much to do. Better to circle the wagons by throwing some crumbs to the easily-deluded. You know how this story ends.

Inter Milan sat very deep and did not press from the front. There was therefore very little of what we see today with back 4 passing it around ring to find an opening to get through the first line. There was no first line of defence, Consequently Murdoch (52) and Auld (39) dominated completed passing whilst the defenders McNeill (19) and Clark (30) had relatively few completed passes compared to modern day where our central defenders average about 66 passes per 90 minutes.
So you are right, Celtic dominated territory but the game, played slowly by modern standards, and with deep opposition meaning Celtic could get into attacking areas quickly, meant much fewer overall passes than we see today.
And TV licence for colour was dearer than for black and white ! The TV aerials were different as well.

I was at that game in the early eighties. We were in the enclosure as I think that was when they were building the new broomloan stand. The monkeys were lobbing objects down on the Celtic fans which was met with a stampede up the stairs to sort them out. Cops got a hold of the situation and positioned themselves in front of the monkeys so there was no more missiles.
Celtic got a draw that day-think it was Allan Sneddon or Mark Reid who scored the equaliser

Allan Sneddon scoring. Holy moly that was a rare event. I remember squeezing in for nothing that day getting through the turnstiles with a pal (or I jumped over).I’m sure we left before time and Celtic scored two late goals. Not sure why we left of course.

Yes it was a long time ago. Whoever scored that day it wasn’t one of our forwards. It’s always stuck in my mind that it was a full back who hit the net.

GENE, true, you needed 625 lines to get colour.
GENE, different aerial from the big H on chimney was an indication of someone with BBC 2 colour. Not many at first but gradually became the norm.
Remember the days when they thought they could trample on us with impunity? When the Nike advert shouted 9/10- could do better, when they signed globally known footballers due to the backing of the RBS establishment and illegal tax avoidance schemes, when their press lapdogs fawned over their dominance and when they tried to bankrupt us for a relatively minor amount.
All of that and more made me want them to disappear completely when they liquidated. Ibrox turning into an ASDA, the lot. and I’m sure that many others wanted the same. Imagine it had. Would you have missed the comedy years when the tribute act tried their best to appear dignified while threatening anyone who called them out for what they are. Imagine missing out on all of the pastings from lower league clubs and their failed attempts to reach the heights of a Petrofac cup final. Imagine losing out on them moving from one slapstick manager to another while promising the gullibles the earth.
Look at what they are reduced to now. Calls to arms based on the lowest instincts of the bigotry underpinning much of their support. Pretending to be relevant. Relying on their ever faithful press lackies to keep them in the news. Cutting ticket allocations to appease the staunchest of their support. Ahhh, life is good.

My condolonces on your loss, just remember there’s music in the heavens and the birds are all singing at this time of year. A year ago today, with my mother in her last couple of weeks, I attended Connaire’s mass in the cathedral in Lisbon. It was one of the most emotional times of my life and I received so much strength from everyone that day. I know you will feel the same and I wish you peace. God bless you and your mother.
Heading out for Glasgow soon and looking forward to renewing acquaintances with some top bhoys I met in Lisbon last year.

Can see Johnstone being back up to Forrest in first half of the season, a Paddy replacement in the squad, and depending on how many games he gets he could go out on loan second half when there’s less games. Morgan will act as similar to Sinclair on the other wing.
If they both stay for the entire season you can see them getting 20+ games which would be great for their development.

As a bhoy who had celebrated his 8th brithday weeks earlier the 25th of May was an even better day.
Mass was at St Teresa’s Newarthill and lasted all of 20 minutes. Myself and my dad galloped down the hill at Burnside Road, him telling me we would be talking about this game for ever. I knew little of how significant it would be both in my life and my family and friends.
We arrived at our old prefab breathless from the run home but also the anticipation. My mum was telling us who had arrived, uncles, cousins, aunties, assorted relatives and friends. The men were drinking copious amounts of alcohol in the living room, the women doing likewise in the kitchen..everyone nervously smoking including some of the kids! We congregated out the back. We had a huge back garden and my dad had made goals with nets! We had a kick about in our hoops, T shirts and homemade hoops tops!
My mum shouted us in, the game was about to start. The kids ran in sat on the carpet in front of the TV, some of the adults sitting most standing other pacing.
I remember the butterflies still but think it was more to do with the adults. The game kicked of to cries of “God bless the Celtic”. I remember us playing well..then penalty! Soft! Then goal! Inter 1up. Half time came. Everyone on a bit of a downer til my dad said “the first team that scored in all the European Cup finals have never won” we had a bit more faith. Second half all I can remember is us playing them of the park with pure beautiful inventive football. Overlap smash goal Tommy! House goes mental chair broke drink spilled kids hugged, everyone hugging kissing singing “hail hail”. It was only a matter of time as we swarmed over them..Stevie Goal! 2-1. Magnificent. Final whistle..house mayhem..men greeting, women greeting, kids kicking the ball about the house..perfecting the goals with drunk adults. Everybody out the back, anybody that didn’t have hoops was inter..adults were allowed to play with slip on shoes and holding drinks.
Celebrations went on til the early hours. 8 o’clock the next morning my da came in to wake me up for school. “Canny believe we’ve done it” he was crying tears of unadulterated joy. Hugging n kissing me and my sister. “Give school a miss today”. Many neighbours and friends did the same and they partied hard again as we relived every part of the game out the back and drank beer and read the newspapers.
I always wondered if the team that scored first had never won and but I have never wanted to know. You believe every your father tells you at that age. “Celtic Champions of Europe” he said every 5 minutes. That was true..he was my hero with the Lions..still the same.

Now, I must stress these are targets. There is much that can undo our efforts: Injury, the MIB’s, complacency, weather, even luck. However, in the language of the modern workplace, they are achievable targets.
