Celtic have been completely dominant in Scottish football on many occasions but only once did this result in a domestic treble (the treble was won another two occasions when Celtic were only marginally ahead of the competition but were ruthlessly focussed).
At all other times we have had a morning like this, tossed out of one of the cup competitions by a vastly over-performing team. Little more than a handful of games against weaker opponents stood between us and a treble in each of the last two years, but as we have noted for many years now, Celtic are not consistent enough to win the treble. The evidence is substantial.
There are parallel ways we should react to this. In the middle of a Champions League campaign we should be focused on little else, players should be rested for the challenge ahead, even if there are resultant risks, but there will be disappointment that we didn’t see a recognisable performance from those drafted into the team. It wasn’t until Matthews, Commons and Stokes arrived last night that we looked anything like the Celtic we know. On no occasions should we lose at home to a Championship team looking for their first away win since April.
That domestic treble from a dominant position was achieved by Martin O’Neill in season 2000-01, a time when Martin scarcely made a substitution before 85 minutes, never mind rested players. This drew criticism, of course, as his ‘feeder’ players were denied opportunities to grow. Despite last night’s reversal I would still rather use these games to develop the wider squad.
I also don’t subscribe to the belief that ‘every game is a cup final’. Motivational strategies lose effectiveness if you roll them out too often.
Credit to Allan Moore and his “boys with desire and work-rate”.

Unfortunately I have heard one
PF – “Getting beat last night was worse than the ICT debacle years ago”
That helped to bring about a much-needed change of football management at the club. Are you seriously trying to tell us that we need a new manager?

If I may have your attention, please ;-)
before the Karagandy game I remember you posting that you were in the same section as me (FS2) and you provided your row and seat numbers, which admittedly I can no longer remember. So, imagine my embarrassment when I went down there at half time and proudly introduced myself as Jobo only to be faced with a blank stare! So, did you just dis me or was there somebody else in your seats?

Do you have any friends on CQN? Just curious.
As someone once said about football “it’s a funny old game” well last nights game proved that cliche true, we certainly lack consistency that’s for sure, but what bothers me is that it’s now a near certainty that Celtic will get turned over by by a so called minnow side more reguarley than before. which is more annoying than anything else as we should beat teams like Morton comfortably given the resources we have at our disposal
Why this is I don’t know lack of application, complacency, tactics over confidence or to many new recruits on the park at the same time, who knows, but freak results like last nights will happen so while annoyed as with any defeat I cant get to despondent as I know we can play far better than we did.But the players must show the same determination and ready to give nothing but 100% effort straight from the kick off against any side be it Morton or Barcelona

I’m thinking about the last time we lost to Morton.
———
Could be wrong but I seem to remember it was the same day as the Bradford fire disaster. Seem to think we heard it on the radio on the way back.
M McGill – would that be the custodians of the holding company?! :-)

No bother. After a lazy summer I’ve now also signed up for the 10k, but too late to organise sponsorship with any confidence, but if the wind’s behind me I’ll see you on the grassy knoll at the finish. cheers.

“And winning the league title isn’t going to be easy either.”
I think we will have a few slip ups and some tough games but I’ll be astounded if we don’t win by 15pts minimum.

Which particular ICT debacle are you thinking about?
One of the SC defeats or the night they cost us the SPL?
Can we agree on the Dream Team one?

Neil Lennons first assault on the Champions League resulted in us going out at the 3rd qualifying round to Braga and thereafter going out of the Europa Cup to FC Utrecht

I hope you’ve let Paul67 know. Even if you haven’t done anything about sponsorship there might be some sort of CQN gathering? I believe there might be a 1254125 ‘tent’ in Glasgow Green too?

No, that’s not what he is trying to tell us.

Just checked that re the Bradford fire and that’s incorrect.

Family and kids all Utd fans although my boy has only ever been with me at OT when Celtic play.
Has also been up the road with me for Celtic matches even in Milan.
He loves Celtic and Manure. Think maybe more for us.
He always had Celtic tops on at school for football as a kid.
Was I a bad father?????

I’m sure the loss to Morton was in Nov 84- just a few days before we played Rapid Vienna at Celtic Park. * I am pretty sure this was the same weekend I took my then girlfriend, Yvonne, too meet my mum and dad in the evening. She was – and hopefully still is- lovely and my mum and dad liked her but it wasn’t a happy weekend.

No ..I’m suggesting that the result last night was absolutely atrocious and that it shouldn’t be as readily accepted by some as it has been

Was at the ICT calamity and sadly lost a bit of faith in Celtic that night. Was there last night. Hope in my heart this time. No comparison.

Thanks for that, hasn’t he learned incredibly quickly though. It took Sir Alex an age to make an impression in the world’s premier club football tournament, a tournament that the much revered WS never really had the tactical nous to succeed in imo.

21Nov/PF – I sat through that last night. At first I was extremely bored and then very frustrated and annoyed at the end. It shouldn’t have happened, but bearing in mind the current status of the football club, it’s not even remotely close to the humiliation of the ICT result.
Really don’t know where you’re coming from with that…?!

Opinions eh? Mine seem to be at odds with most. I thought Rogic played well last night. During the game I was keeping my son in Australia updated via messages that went like this…
27 mins, Rogic at the heart of everything, taking a pounding for his troubles.
28 mins. Charlie free kicked pushed away for corner.
30 mins. Great work by Virgil on the wing, Biton then volleys over from 22 yards
37 mins. Morton player stretchered off after great tackle by Mcgeoch tracking back
HT: 0-0. Nine and ten men behind the ball. Not much space. Couple of times in behind but final ball not falling to us
55 mins. Good run through the middle by Rogic, shot from middle went for placement saved by keeper
59 mins. Long range effort by Biton well struck saved by keeper
64 mins. Rogic sub. Stokes on. Rogic been best man.
Nothing changed or omitted. Those are the points I thought worthy of mention.
Rogic and Biton getting fair mentions.
That’s how I saw it.
