League Cup, defeat only to Ross Co since 2013

155

League Cups come to Celtic in batches.  We won our first in 1956 after a replay against Partick Thistle (revenge would be sweet for them) and retained the trophy a year later by the biggest winning margin in British final history, against Rangers (Originals). Then nothing until Jock Stein’s arrival.

Jock set the record for consecutive wins of this trophy, as Celtic took it home in his first five seasons.  He went straight to setting the record for losing finals at four in a row. At that time, Celtic reached eight finals, winning only once.

Over a 23 period, between 1974 and 1997, we won it only once, a memorable final in season ’82-’83, again against the Originals.  At the time, the ’97 final win over Dundee United felt significant.  We were competitive in the league and won our second trophy in nine years, the league title followed six months later.

The contrast in sentiment between late 1997 and the win over Aberdeen in the early months of 2000 was vast.  We traipsed out of Hampden after that game knowing we’d won a consolation prize; the league was already destined to go elsewhere.  Two months later, Martin O’Neill was in charge of everything.  In his inaugural season he won our third treble, taking the League Cup against Kilmarnock in what Archie Macpherson immediately named, ‘The Henrik Larsson Final’.

‘7’ was on all Celtic players shorts in the final against Dunfermline in 2006, a game played days after the death of Jimmy Johnstone.  For a people communally bereaved, it was one the players needed to win.

A couple of other victories came before the arrival of Brendan Rodgers in 2016 and the start of the Quadruple Treble.  A 3-0 win over Aberdeen, our 100th major trophy, set the tone for the most dominant period any club has enjoyed in Scottish football, or pretty much anywhere.

Remarkably, since 2013 Ross County are the only team to have beaten Celtic at any stage of the League Cup.  First, on their way to winning the trophy in 2016 (Celtic reduced to 10 men), then in a behind closed doors fixture in 2020.  Fortunately for our sakes, County are already out of the competition.

  1. I was intending to go to the Queen’s Park Cafe pre match and then go to the game via Dixon, Prospecthill (up that wee path) and over to the Celtic end.

Huns tend to go to pubs in Battlefield, Cathcart Road so probably walk up Pollockshaws road.

I don’t like the pubs at the Celtic end

  2. I’d be much more relaxed going into this game if a foreign referee/VAR team were in charge. The very fact I’m saying that shows the pathetic situation we have in Scozia where bias/prejudice/incompetence all come together to ruin the basic integrity of the domestic game.

  3. Story of Ange leaving at the end of the season would be funny if it wasn’t for the fact that we hear the same or similar stories being rolled out before every game against thems. It’s almost like the DR get their ‘how we try to unsettle Celtic’ playbook out for the week leading up to every game against them. Their made up stories, if you can understand the strange use of the English language they use, are pathetic.

Aipple – Good to see you’re expecting some nice weather down there. We are gearing up for 2ft of snow over the next 3 days. Going to buy Mrs MN a bigger shovel!

  4. Leeds have appointed a Spaniard as manager Gracia or Garcia not sure which, managed Valencia in the past.

  5. The day after Celtic lost 0-4 at home to Bayer Leverkusen, E-Tims were reporting that Ange was returning to Australia the following day.

The anti-Celtic media does not have a monopoly on writing total crap stories about our manager.

Funny, I was just chatting to one of our reps out there, 5 mins or so ago and he was chatting about the incoming snow. I have things blooming that shouldn’t be bloody bloomin’.

To be fair, I’ve not been in that one, just the International and Beechwood. I much prefer Vicky road but I suppose it might be a bit dangerous cutting across. Just make sure i go when others are

Montfords…..does it normally cost nearly £5 a pint or is that reserved for football games??

Temple Bar in Dublin hit €9.95 last week, tourists finally saying no.

I pay €6.50 to €7 for Heineken in the pubs beside the train station on my way home.

Temple bar are robbers, as are the D4 pubs when the Six Nations is on

I managed to an Oracle course in Dublin in 2003, brought alone my wife. We had a pint and a half of guiness, cost 6 punts, way back then….

  12. West Brom transfer news as agent confirms Eseosa Sule switch from Celtic

The agent of talented youngster Eseosa Sule has seemingly confirmed the centre-forward’s transfer to West Brom from Celtic on Twitter today. (21 February)

Sule signed his first professional contract with Celtic in the summer, nevertheless, his agent has posted a picture of the pair together at The Hawthorns today holding up a West Brom shirt.

The 16-year-old is a highly-rated prospect and will provide some food for thought within the extremely talented Baggies youth ranks.

It’s unclear how much the Albion paid for the services of Sule but it’s likely Celtic will be compensated over time depending on how well the youngster fares at the club.

    West Brom

It’s highly unlikely that fans will see Sule in Carlos Corberan’s first team anytime soon, however, the youngster has a set path he can follow to achieve his Baggies dreams.

Sule can look towards the likes of Taylor Gardner-Hickman, Zac Ashworth and Reyes Cleary at The Hawthorns and see that first-team chances may be possible at some point.

  15. After the discussion, I’m sticking to Plan A.

Queens Park Cafe and walk across to the game

  17. Currants in court again

    Tuesday 21st February

Procedural Hearing between 9.00am and 10.00am

COS-CA104/22 Atp Investments Ltd v Rangers International Football Club Plc CMS Brodies LLP

COS-CA105/22 Norne Anstalt v Rangers International Football Club Plc CMS Brodies LLP

Looks like 2 of the 4 “mystery shareholder” companies who we revoked voting rights for in 2015 have challenged it in court. Procedural hearing this morning so perhaps in the next while we’ll get a full case/judgement released and some more information about who is behind these faceless companies and what their motive is. The other 2 are Blue Pitch Holdings and Putney Holdings. All together they have a 10% stake so influential enough if they are allowed to vote in AGMs etc.

Probably the reason “The Bealer” was wearing a suit at the press conference .

  18. Very sad about Gordon. SPFL needed new blood and he was part of it. Cormack at Aberdeen is similar in his influence but needs major surgery. Hope he comes through that stronger

Do you go on down to the Brazen?

    Always an interesting focal point?

Long time since been down that way.

  20. @Coneybhoy.

The James Connolly on the Quays still has Guinness for a fiver. You have to go to the Celtic side for that. The robbing barstewards in the main bar charge 5.50!

Is The Mission gone, as in closed down, no more, kaput?

It used to be very busy/popular back in the day and i had many a good night in there.

Someone must have managed it very poorly.

Even though it had a policy of “no colours” on match days, it would have been Hun infested

  22. Magwai

😂 haven’t been in there since a wee shite called me a Hun for calling the Lisbon Lions the Rangers End

  23. Thanks to all for the info regarding the Cup final and watching on TV, turns out it’s on Premier Sports in Ireland and not on ViaPlay, got to sorted, here’s to Big Jimmy’s 7-1 win and he pays for my Premier Sports for the rest of the year!

The Mission was owned by a Toryglen gangster ( my mate was at school with him)

Not surprised it went but i loved it in the late 80s. The County Bar(sic) up on Millbrae road is gone too
