League Cup, defeat only to Ross Co since 2013

155

League Cups come to Celtic in batches.  We won our first in 1956 after a replay against Partick Thistle (revenge would be sweet for them) and retained the trophy a year later by the biggest winning margin in British final history, against Rangers (Originals). Then nothing until Jock Stein’s arrival.

Jock set the record for consecutive wins of this trophy, as Celtic took it home in his first five seasons.  He went straight to setting the record for losing finals at four in a row. At that time, Celtic reached eight finals, winning only once.

Over a 23 period, between 1974 and 1997, we won it only once, a memorable final in season ’82-’83, again against the Originals.  At the time, the ’97 final win over Dundee United felt significant.  We were competitive in the league and won our second trophy in nine years, the league title followed six months later.

The contrast in sentiment between late 1997 and the win over Aberdeen in the early months of 2000 was vast.  We traipsed out of Hampden after that game knowing we’d won a consolation prize; the league was already destined to go elsewhere.  Two months later, Martin O’Neill was in charge of everything.  In his inaugural season he won our third treble, taking the League Cup against Kilmarnock in what Archie Macpherson immediately named, ‘The Henrik Larsson Final’.

‘7’ was on all Celtic players shorts in the final against Dunfermline in 2006, a game played days after the death of Jimmy Johnstone.  For a people communally bereaved, it was one the players needed to win.

A couple of other victories came before the arrival of Brendan Rodgers in 2016 and the start of the Quadruple Treble.  A 3-0 win over Aberdeen, our 100th major trophy, set the tone for the most dominant period any club has enjoyed in Scottish football, or pretty much anywhere.

Remarkably, since 2013 Ross County are the only team to have beaten Celtic at any stage of the League Cup.  First, on their way to winning the trophy in 2016 (Celtic reduced to 10 men), then in a behind closed doors fixture in 2020.  Fortunately for our sakes, County are already out of the competition.

*Just watched it on CBS and loved it, huvnae liked tm since April 19 1966 and 11 years later on August 10.

  2. Food for thought.

Multi million pound team in the ” best” league in the world lose five goals to Real Madrid at home after giving them 2 of a start.

We put up a far better performance and as a team we have improved dramatically since our game.

  3. Tonetime tim …with you 100% re Liverpool …the 10th of August 1977 …had a profound effect …maybe only marginally less seismic than July 89 ..so Liverpool not my fav either…the deed compounded by his goal in the next seasons European Cup final to win it …sad times indeed

There was NO MENTION of me Paying for ” PREMIER SPORTS” whatsoever….Maybe a MINOR Detail….but a very important one.

  7. I backed Real Madrid last night along with NAPOLI.

I had also backed Real Madrid to win by the Correct Score of 4 – 1….okay I got it wrong, but I DID FANCY Madrid to score a few.

I also backed NAPOLI to beat FRANKFURT by the Correct Score of 2 – 0, @ odds of 9/1.

    Not too Shabby.

I backed NAPOLI a couple of weeks ago to Win the Champions League OURIGHT… @ odds of 14/1.

I suspect their ” Odds” may have shortened a little after winning last night ?

I will have a wee look at the Betting.

So the Team that took SEVEN Goals off of the Huns at IPOX…….then lose FIVE Goals at home to Real Madrid.

I wonder what the Huns Media will make of that ?

    LOL

    HH.

  8. I just a had a wee look at the Betting to who will win The Champions League ” OUTRIGHT”….

My ante post Bet of NAPOLI @ odds of 14/1….have now been shortened to only 8/1 by BET365.

MY 14/1 will ONLY look good IF NAPOLI Win the feckin thing ?

    LOL

I should have known you’d get me on the small print, for an old Union man you weren’t going to miss the minor but crucial details, I tried!

The only thing I can guarantee about Sunday’s final is all the decisions will go the way of The Rangers 2012, you can take that to the bank!

  12. Real Madrid

To think that we had them rattled back in early September at CP.

To think prior to that game Ancelotti had never managed a team that had won at CP.

To think they saw beating us as the toughest objective in the first phase.

To think Liverpool and Ajax were supposedly the toughest draw in the group of death in the history of the competition. Anyone who saw Ajax struggle to get a home 0-0 with union berlin last week can see how ridiculous that is.

We had limited luck and let ourselves down by not believing in ourselves in the CL. Ange made such a big thing of it personally that the players didn’t believe when it mattered. Just as he did with Australia at the WC. I hope he and they have learned and can step up if he is around next season.

As for Sunday. I think he believes, the players believe and we believe. 4-0 Celtic. VAR and MIB permitting.

  13. There were rumours now for a while about the use of medication by Liverpool and that some attributed this to their ability to close down opponents and play that extremely demanding style of play.

I never really believed it but seeing their almost unbelievable drop off in such a short space of time leads to questions for me. They’re a shadow of the team they were just last season.

  14. I see the huns have more injuries …they just never tire of this shite. Baldrick’s cunning plan fc.

Love the Brazie, but before and after home games I go to Chapman’s in Rutherglen. The last time I was in the Brazie it was before a gig at the Academy. Good craic and the band that were on at the Academy were supping pints in there.

If we’re playing at Hampden, I go to the Cedarwood before games.

Reasons to be cheerful about Sead Haksabanovic.

Still only 23 years old. Comfortably two-footed. Loves a dribble. Carries the ball to backtracking defenders.

Happy to shoot on sight. Shows on pitch leadership qualities. Contracted to 2027. Current Celt most likely to dink a Panenka penalty. A beguiling score any time punt for Sunday.

We have a good one here.

    LOL.

I WILL AGREE however, that the NEW Club will get MOST….If not ALL the Decisions on Sunday.

Celtic will have a great deal to overcome, but hopefully The GOOD GUYS will Gub The BADDIES ?

Yes I know that but the Viaplay website wouldn’t let me subscribe as I don’t have a UK bank card, had to do it via Premier Sports, still in use in Ireland

    ——————-

That’s interesting; I met a senior guy in a pub in Dublin once , watching a Celtic game (Glasgow guy). I saw on linkedin recently that he had moved on after the Viaplay takeover. Premier had no big contracts then

He told me that they used to wait to the last minute to get the rights to CL qualifiers etc at Celtic. Negotiated with Peter Lawwell directly at CP.

    He liked him; controversial!!

Aye. Just like Liverpool had them rattled in the first 20 minutes last night.

next time I’m in Glasgow I’ll take you up on the few beers offer, (I’ll buy as well, I’m not tight!) as long as they have good Gunness!!

I assume the different names (but same company) is something to do with how they operate out of different countries and how they are registered, not able to take EU cards in the UK anyomore, who knows?

  24. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Watched Liverpool – Real Madrid last night.

    Was compelling viewing.

Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti might have pulled a fast one on all of Europe.

“We’re old”, “we’re past our best”.

Modric (37) and Benzema (35) are clearly in the twilight of their careers but most of their squad are 30 or under.

Of the other 32+ players … Hazard didn’t play and Kroos and Nacho only got a few minutes each.

Real are technically brilliant but it is their tactical strength and game management which impresses me most.

As soon as it went to 3-2 last night?

    Game over.

They squeezed the life out of Liverpool without appearing to do so.

    As for Liverpool?

Typical Klopp. Not a criticism BTW because I think he is a great manager.

But his methodology (at Liverpool and Dortmund) was heavily centred around maximizing energy and athletic output.

Human beings actually CAN perform at 103% of capacity.

    But not for long.

Perhaps 3 seasons max then the body begins to break down requiring either long term rest or, even more brutally, replacement.

They’ll get better once players return from injury but, right now, I reckon they would struggle to

    – qualify for CL next season / top 4

    – beat Sevco by any more than five goals

  26. A wee quiz on BBC site on naming the starting 11s from 2019 LC Final (the spawny one!)

Only 2 of the Celtic side are still at the club and only 1 likely to start on Sunday

10 of the hun team are still at the club and I’d say 8 are likely to start

The turnover at each club is starkly different
