Legia less appealing, Man City under-grad

1542

Surprised we got two in yesterday, as Manchester City under-grad, Jason Denayer, signed for a year-long loan last night.  The 19-year-old has yet to play first team football so is likely to be considered as backup at Celtic, though reports are promising.

Not surprised that Legia Warsaw have lodged an appeal to Uefa to be re-instated into the Champions League, they have to try everything possible.  It has not been confirmed what ground Legia have appealed on, however, at the weekend, Polish FA chief exec, Zbigniew Boniek, suggested an appeal would be made on two grounds:

That only one member of the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body was at the hearing to made the decision, and

That Legia were not given the chance to make a submission to the Body.

There are 10 members of the Disciplinary Body and rules state that decisions require the attendance of at least three, unless the case is “urgent”, when a decision can be taken by one member.  To defend their process, Uefa need to insist that the circumstances were urgent, probably citing the Champions League play-off draw, which was due to take place two hours later.

While the Disciplinary Body allow submissions to be made prior to a hearing, Article 34 authorises the Body to undertake a hearing without submissions and “in the absence of one or all of the parties”.

In the unlikely event Legia won an appeal on procedural grounds, a subsequent hearing, perhaps with more Disciplinary Body members in attendance, would take place, and would inevitably reach the same conclusion.

Article 21, paragraph 2, of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations state, “A match is declared forfeit if a player who has been suspended following a disciplinary decision participates in the match.”  There is no ambiguity or lateral for the Disciplinary Body to exercise a different reprimand.

Legia’s appeals can carry on all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but Celtic will not be involved in any future issues.  NK Maribor represent a vastly, vastly, greater risk to their Champions League aspirations.

The death of Hollywood star Robin Williams sparked a Twitter feud between former footballers and current Talksport colleagues Stan Collymore and Alan Brazil on Tuesday night after the latter made insensitive comments about suicide.

The outspoken Brazil was clinging on to his job as presenter of the station’s Breakfast Show after he declared he had little sympathy for comedian and actor Williams – who was found hanged at his home on Monday – and accused him of selfishness.

Talksport immediately distanced itself from the views of Brazil, the former Scotland striker, and refused to reveal whether he would be disciplined or sacked over the outburst.

To make matters worse, the 55-year-old was drawn into a war of words with Collymore, who took to Twitter to condemn his colleague’s “blind ignorance”.

The former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest striker, who has long battled depression and has previously considered suicide, initially restricted himself to retweeting comments from other users of the social media site which branded Brazil “shameful” and “out of order”.

That prompted a sarcastic response from his colleague, who posted: “Well done @StanCollymore for retweeting comments about me. I stand by what I said today. The sympathy I do have is for RW’s family & friends. @StanCollymore has his opinion and I’m entitled to mine.”

Collymore, whose Talksport show Kick Off has previously included discussions about depression, soon hit back, writing: “You’re not a doctor @alanbrazil so your opinion on mental health issues counts for nothing to be fair. On Kick Off @alanbrazil we’ve had mental health experts, survivors, people who struggle daily, Ralf Ragnick and more. Try listening. “An opinion on a factual illness isn’t an opinion. It’s called ignorance.”

Speaking on his Breakfast Show, Brazil recounted the moment his wife told him of Williams’s suicide, admitting he misheard the news and thought singer Robbie Williams had died.

“And then when she said, ‘Robin’, I thought, ‘Oh, OK’. It didn’t hit me hard like it would if it had been Robbie. Thank God it wasn’t.”

Despite co-presenter Brian Moore intervening to insist suicide was never “an easy matter”, Brazil added: “I believe he’s got a daughter as well – what’s she feeling like this morning? Now she’s got to sort the arrangements out. I think it’s just shocking, I really do. I don’t have a lot of sympathy, I’m sorry.”

Former England rugby international Moore stepped in again but Brazil countered: “What you leave behind is diabolical. I’m really annoyed about that.”

Listeners took to Twitter to condemn his ignorance and call for him to be sacked, prompting a statement from the radio station which read: “Talksport would like to apologise for any offence caused. Alan’s comments do not reflect the views of the station.”

Collymore had the last word, posting: “Well done @brianmoore666 for speaking with erudition today on @talkSPORT, with sensitivity, respect and empathy. Not blind ignorance.”

Brazil is no stranger to controversy, having been accused in May of making sexist remarks about female sports journalists.

  2. Good morning CQNers,

If we were in Legia Warsaw’s position I’d expect the board to do their damndest to make up for such a stupid clerical error, however, whatever sympathy I had for them has evaporated – their part-owner and leading spokesman lacks class and intelligence and in the Glasgow vernacular – is a numpty!!

The Celtic board come in for endless criticism here but they’ve handled themselves with aplomb.

Scrolling back I see we’re gaining more and more agent provocateur s, hmmm, as they don’t add anything I believe they’re best ignored as usual.

Good luck to Ronny and the team tonight.

  3. Talking about depression. I feel for Zaluska been at the club for 5 years and Gordon after 2 years out of the game looks to be starting against St Johnstone..

Stunning early autumn feel over dunblane this morning.

An interesting read below. Not exactly where I sit on the matter but prob does sit with many views on CQN. I like reading stuff I don’t entirely agree with – I find it’s good for sharpening and sanity checking your own views.

So I can confirm that all in CQN who think like I do are 100% correct, the rest are plain wrong to varying degrees but I love all good Tims nonetheless!

If Ronny says that wages are a problem then what are the likes of Austrian and Polish players on? Surely to god there are players out there that would improve our team who we could sign for between 3 and 4 million who would accept 15k per week?

Exactly what I have been banging on about. The bean counters and hand wringers just cant get this into their heads though.

Tonev is out of the game tonight and likely to miss the away leg against Maribor. Oh FFS.Could we get any worse?.The game we need someone with pace in and he is injured. When did he get injured?.Did we take him on with this injury knowing he would miss the qualifier?.

Sounds BS but doesn’t take much for the old negative DNA to kick in here…

  14. Does anyone know if we were allowed any representatives at the hearing this morning, purely as observers of course?

Seems odd that such an important meeting could occur without anyone being in attendance, but this is EUFA after all so nowt would surprise me.

  15. In fairness, the guy Tonev also has has mother over and she can’t speak English so there is no way he could possibly be left for 90 minutes on her own with that in mind……seriously!!!

  16. Reading Boniek’s comments this morning, it is pretty obvious that someone from UEFA has had a word with the Polish FA chief and told him to get Legia to stop besmirching UEFA and Celtic with each new day, or both the FA and Legia will face disrepute charges.

It is very telling that Boniek is now keen to tell the world, “It is Legia’s mistake. Not UEFA or Celtic.”

  17. We are in decline? The negativity has no boundaries with some in here, and the happy clapping head in the sand is Hunnish, what’s next, paranoid, obsessed?

I’m a glass half full Tim that’s me, because I am that I’ve no opinion?

Gimmi a feckin break, thank god I only know you lot in here, defeated before a baw is kicked, awe aye your just the kind of guys a want have a pint with, non stops laggers of Celtic the board and PL, clean the fluff aff the needle Ffs.

There are no Celtic representatives in attendance, nor should there be. It is entirely a matter between Legia and UEFA. Celtic are merely the beneficiaries of Legia’s punishment and have no input.

Remember, Celtic made no protest and are therefore not involved in the due process.

Slag off the board behind their back and buy a season book.

    Genius.

  23. I know Ronny when talking about Tonev added that he had a slight injury, but he said Tonev wouldn’t be available for tonight because he had his mother visiting and he couldn’t leave her alone because she didn’t speak English. Am I the only one that finds this hilarious.
